Title: Spring Paddling: Easter Weekend Updated... again...
Post by: Bill Schlarb on April 08, 2009, 10:08:05 PM
Hi folks,

After discussing with several people, we have come up with the following:

Friday: Rivere Achigan,  class 2 - 3+ river with some larger drops that can easily be carried around

This one is located in the Laurentians about 2.25 hours from Ottawa.

here's a Google Maps link to the meeting spot in New Glasgow Qc.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=ottawa+on&daddr=County+Rd-17+to:45.833285,-73.874388&hl=en&geocode=%3BFfaBtwIduoiK-w%3B&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=2&sz=15&via=1&sll=45.83469,-73.884172&sspn=0.020691,0.036607&ie=UTF8&t=h&ll=45.546755,-74.671326&spn=1.329121,2.342834&z=9

Note: Autoroute 50 is open right to Grenville Qc so that you don't have to drive on Hwy 148 towards Lachute

Plan to meet in Hawkesbury at Tim Hortons at 9:30 AM

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday:  nothing planned so far, Jim Forbes and I are for open to suggestions

Beaver Creek, Meet at Kanata Park And Ride at 8:15 AM

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday:  Rivere Bonniebrooke, class 2 - 3+ river with some larger drops that can easily be carried around

This one is located in the Laurentians as well and is about 1.75 hours from Ottawa.

here's a Google Maps link to the meeting spot in St Canut Qc

Based a trip that Late Ray and some other folks were on today. the Bonniebroooke was very low today and will probably

Hi Bill.

I am definitely in for the Monday paddle. Too bad I will be missing the Achigan, after hearing about it so much from Paul...

Not sure about Monday as the family will all gather outside Valleyfield on Sunday.
So, looking forward for the Archigan and carpooling for tomorrow.

Hey Bill,

I'm in for Monday.  Now if I can just find my kayak.....

You better clean out the mouse crap and cobwebs when you find it. Oh since the boat hasn't been on the water for such a long time, it tends to dehydrate and get brittle ... remember to bring some duct tape.

Title: Achigan report
Post by: LouisD on April 11, 2009, 10:36:13 AM
Heuumm...
A hell of a start of season for me.
Last year at this time, the mounties were chasing me and my kayak down the parliament.

Instead, lots of first for me, yesterday.
First descent of the season, first spring descent, first time down the Archigan, first time with the "A" team.
(Ah and oh! first swim too...)

The "A" team...the guys didn't say if it the "A" stood for Ancient or for Admirable...or something else...
(While the "AA" team was running a double feature not too far including the Booniebrooke..)
By far the weakest link of the group, I got excellent support and camaraderie from my fellow paddlers.
The Achigan is deep into French territory with a slew of very nice French "riverains" and snakes it way between many cottages propped on the steep banks.
I really enjoyed the talks in my native language with the owners of the lands we leveraged.
In preparation for my return to roots, I had brought some reading material for the long ride; a couple of very typical French comic books: Achille Talon and Asterix et Obelix.

As I got dressed and equipped, I was thinking:"This is crazy, what are you doing here? There is still plenty of snow and the water is freaking cold."
On top of that I was using my unfamiliar big GT8.1...Lots of apprehension getting in...

First rapid is looooooong. Not used to that. Numbed and frozen fingers from the cold - better to get gloves.
Any way, the GT seemed to know where it was heading and I just followed it; that thing floats like a cork.

We arrived at a cascade with several meters (15m?) of successive and dispersed drops.
Engaged a long talk with the land owner who welcomed us to come back, while the others where scouting and moving their boats into the appropriate positions for their level of adventure. Rob ran most of it but to first drop. Most ran the last section...including my somehow bolder self.
What a treat that was...around the rocks into a creek-like leg.

Around lunch time we all hit a rapid with a solid 3 waves wave train ending with a big hole...Can I make the line? Thanks to Don, I saw that either side of the 3rd wave worked.
Well, looks like I did it fairly well, hit the right spots - but not all in great style like my peers...

I think the next one was the elbow section..."Just hug the left, close to the big rock and then punch the big rooster tail, then hard right in the eddy before you engage into the next part" said Bill with a lot more confidence that I was feeling at the time...Thanks to my floating cork, I bobbed my way through. Fiou...
Let's see past the elbow now....and then the typical error while looking down stream - I got my guard down and got pushed again a partly submerged rock and leaned the wrong way. Boy that water is cold for the hands and feet...Thanks Dave! Thanks Bill.

Collected my gut, cold self and boat a tad lower to move left side as the next drop was a tough one.
Everyone but Dave, Larry and Rob got out and watched them. Rob tried to boof and was stopped to a still on the sharp edge, then some quality time upside down below...Larry engaged 2 feet to the right and barely made it, saving himself from instant shame and refreshment...then Dave, our silent Dave, hit the perfect line... Well done buddy!!

The watch gave me enough time to drip the extra cold water I carried and then...hop back on the saddle for a long combo of "planioles", rapids and strange housing habits.

Bill says they have been coming back to the Achigan for the last 8 or 9 years...I can now see why...

Right now best guess for Monday is the Grass - Lampson Falls to Russell in New York about 2 hours south of Ottawa and near the college town of Potsdam New York. The run is about 11 km, Class IV- pool drop style - its a step up from the Taylorville Section of the Beaver. If you have not done any river running yet this year and your roll is not bombproof, you should have a dry top and dry pants because the water is very cold!

...if I wake up and my back is feeling okay. Hurt it doing back exercises...

Paul, maybe you should mention WHY you were doing those exercises? Hmmmm?

I will be at the Champlain bridge tomorrow, around noonish or so, approximately, give or take...

My trip report for yesterday: Mountain biking on hard-packed snow down ski slopes closed for the season, then ski at Tremblant, followed by a 2.5-hour run of the Diable river (continuous Class II/III), with a take out located... in the backyard of the Scandinave SPA in Tremblant. Ahh... The hot tubs... And forget about the cold water part!

I'm in for whatever we run on Monday. Heck! I even have a car with a roof rack till Tuesday!

To be in better shape to paddle of course, didn't work out that way though. I may paddle Monday if my back is better but for now, I'm trying to save my season as opposed to surf a few hours and aggravate my back again, sucks..

Did the Doncaster yesterday and it would likely be the only thing going on Monday in Quebec (or Du Nord).  However, it is a big step up from the bottom section of the Bonniebrook.  I would suggest that Quebec is off for now until things get a lot more water (Bonniebrook, Simon, Mulet) unless people are feeling pretty gritty.

Grasse NY:  I could be in for that.  I would double check the water.  I heard rumors the Grasse went down (a lot).  However, I don't know how reliable those rumors are.

That river is fun.  I would be in for that.  Bad news:  I lost my GPS put ins and take outs for that.  I have no idea how to get there now.

Petawawa?  Town section?  Jo suggested that and I would be in.  Practice up for the race.   :P

My email is mikeykmckay@gmail.com if anyone has any suggestions.  (Or if people are feeling gritty)

PS:  People should start to bug LATE RAY for the end of year vid from 2008.

I would be VERY keen to do the Independence and the Otter.  VERY keen.

Bit of a drive.  However, it is at a great level (as of yesterday).  I would suspect boaters would have to be very comfortable in class 4+ water, have a very solid roll, and be ready for cold weather.

Easter Monday Paddling:

We're heading down to run the Lampson Falls section of the Grasse as described by Rob earlier in this thread. Plans are to meet at the Ultra gas station on Prince of Wales Dr. just south of Barnsdale Rd. at 9:00 AM; it's a 2 hour drive to the takeout from there. Cold water gear is mandatory as well as a river running boat or creeker; also please bring your passport or some form of US Customs approved ID for crossing the border.

Here is a link to the meeting spot: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Prince+of+Wales+Dr&daddr=&hl=en&geocode=FQBQsgIdA7l8-w&mra=ls&sll=45.240358,-75.712495&sspn=0.015381,0.027122&ie=UTF8&ll=45.240403,-75.712795&spn=0.007691,0.013561&t=h&z=16
