Well everyone it is time to start thinking about the annual Beast Feast for this year, it will be on the weekend of 08/09 of Aug. I would like to know the opinion of who intend on going where to hold the event the Ottawa or the Gatineau river . Each location has advantages and it does not make a difference to me. What I would like is for someone to organize some other activities for the after diner entertainment.

I certainly know how to confuse everyone, somehow my brain was not working yesterday the Beastfeast has to be the weekend of the 15/16 Aug because I will be out of town and I only get back to town on Saturday. It seems the Gatineau will be the location unless flooded out like last year.
-
Cool! ;D
I updated the title to reflect those dates and reduce the potential for confusion... ::)
-
I vote for the Gatineau for beast feast 2009. No crowds, no rafts, no lineups.
Richard
-
I also vote for the Gat. I haven't seen it yet and I really want to.
-
I'll be there (non-meat-eater)! I know Wendy Sladen's coming, too, though she may not reply until late as she's in the bush incommunicado. :)
-
I will be there. Ray will too - reserve some fish for him please.
Thanks!
Heather
-
I'll be there!
-
I will go.
Robert
-
I am planning to be in as well!

Sorry...I can't attend...I've got an ear infection that feels like it's burrowing into my brain, but even worse...I have to go to a wedding that weekend, and I hate going to primitive rituals..
Have fun, say hi to the Beast for me, and remember to thoroughly wash and dry out your ears after rolling in the Ottawa...(Have you ever seen the Twilight Zone episode about the earwig in the ear? This ear infection is comparable. Achy! Itchy! Ouchy!)

@Mudman: Go to your doctor or any walk-in clinic and get prescribed Cipro eardrops. I'm sure you'll be good to go in less than 10 days.
-
As you know, our free style national team paddlers are not getting much funding.
Their sponsors are providing some equipments, little money.
Airfares and lodging are coming out of their own pockets.
The Paddling with the Pros has been collecting some monies for them.
Now, here is another way for us to help them and also get something in return.
Following discussions with Billy and Carly Harris, I'll be running a draw during the Beast Feast for the following items:
- a lesson with Billy and Carly
- an H2O paddle
- a Salus Jazz (the new one model) lifejacket
- and a Level 6 drytop
4 prizes
Each ticket will be 10$.
Soooo, the odds are pretty much in your favor....
As they are training hard for the upcoming Worlds, I might not be able to get the stuff in time for Beast Feast.
If so, we'll arrange something afterward...and then get their report first hand.
All proceed will go to help those 2 team members.
More details later...
(I used to have a roll of tickets...gotta find where that roll is...)

Way to go Louis!. Now if one of those members would actually like to attend our Beast Feast, and if!!! you could swing that, it would sweeten the pot even more. Good job dude!
Paul:-)

The Worlds are at the end of this month over in Switzerland.
They are all training and getting ready to leave.

PS Anyone, how is the Gat when the level are higher?

ohhhh masters of the Beast and the CDB ...
I was wondering if you guys would mind if I came in a tandem Canoe ...
This would be a little like the last time I came in a tandem w/ my friend Anthony only Anthony has decided never to paddle w/ me in an open canoe again so i had to find another partner ...
Also, would The Master of the Beast please count 3 more mouths to feed [including mine]?
Now if ya'll don't want to be picking up my canoe parts and its paddlers [like last time] I'll understand and ... bring my kayak and tell my friends they can work that last wave w/out me while I'm 'out there' ... there is also the chance that my friend realizes that maybe this is a little nuts and basically says forget the canoe bit ... at which point I'm back in the kayak I guess ...
So is anyone in opposition to ' one of them dere canoe thingies in the water at the same time as youz guys ' ?
PS: this comes with the usual 'lunch and other goods' delivery service that canoes are so well known for ;]

I now have the roll of tickets in hand.
Draw will be Saturday evening after the dinner. So catch me before hand.
P.S. Great day of paddling yesterday on the Middle. Did a new nice (no great) line down Little Trickle...inspired by Odd Doug. Surfing (crowded) and Angel's kiss and then the far less busy Butterfly. And a great run down Lower No Name.
Staying afterward to watch the crazy younger paddlers in the McCoy rodeo. Got footage of JackT (aka the Ripper) as proof of him ridding Phil!!!

I'll be there.

Hi guy,
You and your canoe friend are welcome, there should be other canoes as well.
As for dinner, it's $10 per person for a non-member to enjoy Darryl's excellent feast.
We'll count in three more for dinner.

I?m planning to paddle and join the Beast Feast on Saturday August 15, rain or shine
Conditional upon suitable weather and viewing on August 15th, a friend of mine expressed interest in seeing the white water paddling experience and meeting paddlers and nonpaddler widows, at a paddling event such as Beast Feast.
With current high waters, and limited river access, actually seeing white water paddling might be a problem. (On the Ottawa with the bottom of Big McCoy flooded out, there is not much to see and for nonboaters access is a problem, whereas with high water on the Gatineau, surfing on the Gatineau at Bonnet Rouge is difficult or impossible,)
If attending she?d be happy to bring a potluck supper contribution, (perhaps a fruit salad), and be a shuttle driver. She asked about activities that nonpaddlers would do while waiting for the paddlers to complete their river trip. I suggested that besides meeting former paddlers and nonpaddler-widows, there would be an opportunity for a short hike along the river, a swim and taking in some sun on the beach, weather permitting, and then seeing paddlers play in the rapid just above the take-out.
(To show what to expect at Bonnet Rouge, there is the aerial photo at http://www.bonnetrougerafting.com/BonnetRouge.php?id=Entreprise&Lang=EN&smenu=Bonnet. Likewise for River Run, there is http://www.ottawariverheritagetours.com/index.php?p=stay )
=1= My friend asked I confirm that she?d be welcome to the Beast Feast, and ask about any fees for nonmember attendance. ==
=2= While many would prefer the Gatineau, are water levels on the Gatineau likely too high again this year? When is the location likely to be decided? ==
Feedback?
-
The best chance of seeing whitewater paddlers in action, or of seeing the bottom of my boat as it floats down the rapids (not to be missed), is to do the bonnet rouge rafting trip, but they'll need a minimum number of people to run it.
Ian
-
Parham & Nicole (8) + Trevor, Sophie (9), Sam (3) plan to be there.
-
I'll be there too.
most probably, I'll eat Salmon.
See you there
Annie
-
Salmon here as well.
Just to stick with the frey and white water theme.
My brother-in-law and his friend will be joining me in the descent either Sat or Sunday. TBD.
They are very occasional paddlers for the last 15 years (kayaks circa same vintage) and will be coming from Grand-Remou off where the brother-in-law has a cottage. Will confirm later what day and if they will join us for the dinner thing.
Prize items for the draw will be onsite, thanks to JackT(he Ripper).
Wishing for rain this week to get Transfo wave back... ::)

Here's the latest from our Chef Darryl:
Saturday Dinner is set for 5:00 PM,
As in previous years we're asked to bring salads, desserts, bread and your favourite beverage...
Darryl reminds everyone you need to bring your own place settings: plate, knife, fork etc.
Non-members are asked to pay $10 for dinner.
For Saturday paddling, we'll meet at Bonnet Rouge at 10:30 AM to organize shuttles etc.
Info on Bonnet Rouge can be found at www.bonnetrougerafting.com (http://www.bonnetrougerafting.com)
If have any other questions, please post them to this thread.
Thanks,
CdB Exec

Well, I'm new to the club and will join you for this Saturday. If I can get a general idea how many people will be there I will bring some home made fudge for dessert.
See you then!
-
Hi Jeff
Our chef is expecting around 40 for dinner but you don't need to make that much fudge!
Bill
-
I'm hoping to be there, too! So count me in.
Wendy
-
I'll be dissapointed if you don't make it, Wendy! I'm coming.
Not big on meat, though, so if there's extra fish...

Welcome to the gang, Jeff.
If you bring frozen ice cream with that, I'll make sure you get royal treatment and membership for life!!! ;D

Numbers Clarification - while the weather looks great for Saturday, my girlfriend has decided she has too much on her plate to make it, so she will not be joining us this get-together.
I'm also looking to be a paying carpooling passenger
rather than bring my monster gas guzzler. Can I car pool with someone? I can meet you on your way to one of the bridges across to Quebec. I live just a little west of Island Park, north of Scott but no matter what Ottawa-Gatineau bridge you are using, I can get to its suitable transfer point, (such as Pump House for Eddy Street or Portage bridges, or NRC Sussex parking lot for the McDonald Cartier bridge.) I can also pick up someone on the way, and I have room for an extra vehicle in my driveway.

Looks like you'll have to bring in 15$ and a filled membership form as well, Doug, otherwise, you'll have to eat those wild berries you were talking to me about on the way to Beachburg on Sat... ;D
On the raffle topic...
Got the H2O paddle, Salus Jazz PFD yesterday from good buddy JackT(he ripper) as we went for a dip at the pump house.
Just missing the L6 Dry Top at this point.
Please, everyone, do not buy any tickets...I'd like to keep them both... ;)

Not so fast Louis...
Doug gave me his properly filled out application form and money last Saturday.
So no wild berries for dinner yet...

I still dont know what I am doing yet.
How long does it take to drive from Bonnet Rouge to River Run?
What sucks about this whole thing is I am camera less and not sure if I want to make the 7 hour drive one way.

Based on Google Maps it's about 145 kms if you take the 301 from Chenaux to Kazabazua.
100 kms longer if you drive to Ottawa and then go north.

Did you drop it in Phil's last weekend?

I think I'm coming. I might bring two non-paddling friends....

My sister will also join us.

Hi guys
Looks like I get to skip out from work early on Saturday if it's not too busy. Chantal and Chris are coming as well. With a bit of luck we'll make it in time for some beast.
See you at the bonnet!

CAR POOLING: Bill Schlarb suggested I post that we meet in and car pool from the Champlain Bridge island parking lot Saturday morning Aug 15. To meet the others at Bonnet Rouge at 10:15 am, we should meet at 8:05 and then depart by 8:15 am.
If anyone wishes a safer location to leave cars all day telephone me, we can use my driveway, and overflow onto the street which is 1/2 km due west of the intersection of Scott and Island Park. In any case we will then proceed to the island parking lot.
As a tea totaller, I am willing to drive someone's car back if appropriate.

On my end,
My brother in law will be waiting for us at the put in a bit before 11h00 on Sat and will not join us for dinner as he has guests at the cottage for dinner.
(wait until you see his kayak...)
Wife/daughters are not coming either.
Carpooling is already settled for me as my roof rack will be full with 3 kayaks and can't take more for this run.
See you all up there.

Sweeeeeet it looks like a lot of people are attending the beast ;D
Pat and I will be making our way up to the Gatineau saturday morning.
Can somebody post a link of google maps or something so that we know where to go?? we've never been!

I would discourage this. Leaving your car at Champlain for extended periods of time, and especially overnight, is a bad idea. Set up your own ride arrangements if you need to with your regular paddling people and consider the added complication and considerations for camping gear/time for loading.

You should really try to make it happen Colin. It'll be a blast. We ourselves will be driving like 5 hours to get there! Can I try to bribe you with money lol?? I do still owe you some :P
-
I wouldn't want to leave my car there overnight. Also the island could be busy on a hot summers day so I don't think we should fill up the parking lot with cars.
I do live close by and can offer a ride to somebody.
Ian
-
So... As per our recent phone conversation, Ian is kind enough to offer me a ride so I will be able to join the feast!
And... I have a bunch of CdB hoodies, which I will bring with me. 35$ each, they're great!
BTW, my track record at Seuil du Corbeau isn't so clean, so don't follow me there! I promise not to go over the rock this time, like I did last time, and the the other time too...

I think that the rock will be more visible this time since the water level has drop quite a bit since last time we were there. In a way, that is a little sad because your line there provides such entertainment :P
Annie
-
If anyone has room on their roof for some boats please let me know. The truck is dying therefore we will be coming down in a car that has no racks and we have 3 boats to bring....
-
CAR POOLING Suggestion: I've not yet heard of others that are definitely going and wishing to carpool Saturday, but failing linkage by other means, meet at Champlain Bridge island parking lot by 8:10 am, transfer boats, and consider leaving your surplus cars parked in a subdivision on either side of the bridge for greater security. I will not meet you on the island, since I will be car pooling with Ian Bowles, going downtown to pickup Christian G. in Ian's car. It is at capacity. See you at the takeout - Bonnet Rouge and/or on the Gatineau River.
I prefer play time to the flat water paddle of the upper pay put in, and thus use the lower free put in. By pickup of trash there, I'm made myself welcome there, and never had a break in. The only restrictions are to keep the site clean, park well off the road, provide for and not block cars or access of other groups, and not park there on Gatineau festival weekend. Seek me out at Bonnet Rouge if you wish to participate.
-
Hi Cleo, I can take some boats for you. I'm bringing two non-paddlers and only one boat so I have room. Give me a call before 11 tonight or between 7-8 tomorrow morning. 613-233-5178.
-
I am not paddling tomorrow but am heading up in the afternoon to get there in plenty of time for dinner. Will stay over and paddle Sunday. If my timetable suites you, I can drive.

Darryl - Probably way too last minute, but slight chance of one more guest for the feast tonite, thanks.
-
Ahhhh! Two beautiful days of paddling on the serene Gatineau in great company!!!
And then great party Saturday evening with excellent food.
The Salmon was perfectly cooked (but too small a portion).
The chat and the stars radiant. (Somehow the stars were masked at 4h00AM and the sky started dripping...)
But the sun came back on cue for the Sunday's decent.
Special thanks for Darryl for all that cooking and preparation.
Lots of good plates and stuff were also brought in by many.
The raffle went very well with around 45 tickets sold.
Dom picked up the H2O
Shaun picked up the Salus Jazz.
And George, our newest member - from Toronto - got the L6 drytop.
The last winner for the last prize wasn't present, he will be alerted asap.
Don't forget to follow Billy and Carly during the Worlds in Thun starting August 31st.
And a special thanks for all of those who helped (Herr Doctor Christian back to school, Richard Coeur de Lion and Fat Lip Ray, and all the others) with my brother-in-law on his big WW christening.
He showed up with a 25yr old R5 and no roll.
Came back bruised and a bit bloody but determined to return with better equipment this time...and hopefully with a roll.
He had very nice comments regarding the members he met and he is apparently completely hooked now.
He called me up Sunday evening and talked to me about all those kayaks he had been researching on the web.
The search is on.
We had 29 kayaks coming down on Sat. And a few crews in canoes (including Jennifer and John)
(I got to see one up close....outch! Let's just say I like Dom better in a kayak even with the H2O)
Also of note is Annie's most recent boyfriend; cute and young, very young....
I think it is safe to say that Raymond took her breath away...
Already there were talks of of babysitting... ;)
OK, time for bed and dreaming of more paddling on that beautiful river...
Ahhhh! Zzzzzz

I've got the boat for him, a well tested WS Godzilla.
At 5 feet shorter than the R5, he'll think he just bought a playboat.

Thanks for a fantastic introduction to the Gat. The food was fantastic and the company even better.

Nice pictures Christian. It was a great weekend.

That was a great weekend spent in agreeable company! Thanks so much to Darryll and the other organizers. My eight year old Nicole was asking if we could go again!
-
Hi folks,
I left a dark blue polypro and an ivory colour long sleeve zip-T hanging on the side of Darryl's trailer Saturday evening and am hoping that someone picked it up. Also, I left my knife and fork between as well, it is the kind where the fork slides into the handle of the knife. If you've got them or know who might, let me know
Bill
-
Hey Parham!
You can let Nicole know that the bright thing we saw in the sky Saturday was indeed a planet--it's Jupiter. With a pair of regular binoculars (you need to hold them against something like a tree trunk for stability), one can easily see its 4 'Galilean' satellites around. She might get a kick of seeing that... Cheers.
--Christian
-
I found a 2-tone blue poly t-shirt stuffed in the back of my boat on Sunday. I have no idea how long it's been there. It's definitely not mine, unless I'm just suffering memory loss from being whacked on the head with a paddle shaft. I suspect someone else with a red Jackson got the boats mixed up. Or maybe someone thought I should dress smarter while on the river and gave me a new outfit. In which case, thanks but blue just isn't my colour.
-
Finally I got my computer back. Hey everyone, what a fantastic day of paddling it was on saturday. Great people, great wheather, great supper, just an overall wonderfull week-end. Thanks again Darryl for the wonderful feast and to everyone who organised the supper, fantastic job everyone.
My daughter Emilie had lots of fun over the week-end and had fun playing with Parham's daughter Nicole, my daughter just loves to go to the bonnet rouge and so do I.
Cheers everyone
Richard
