Title: Thursday Evening Paddling at Champlain
Post by: Bill Schlarb on May 25, 2010, 07:24:22 PM
Hi folks, just a reminder that Thursday Evening paddling is starting this May 27 and will go until mid-September.

Start time is around 6:00 PM goes until until dusk or you get tired/hungry/thirsty.
After which we usually head over to Whispers Pub in Westboro (corner of Tweedsmuir and Richmond)
Wings are on special Thursday nights and we get "team nachos" (courtesy of Paul)

The water is warm and the evenings are getting longer. See you there...

A suggestion: would anyone be interested in checking out Remic wave Thursday? We could drift down from Bate Island, surf a few times and walk/paddle back up. The idea is to find out if the level is low enough to do the circuit without getting off the river (the Britannia gauge is broken). Last night I checked the JJ wave at Deschesnes but the level is a bit too high for that playspot, from what I could see from shore.

I live on the river in Dunrobin.  River level has hardly changed in the last 3 weeks.  It came up maybe 10 cm 2 weeks ago and went down again.  My guess based on references around my place is about 2.9 metres.

I think the water is still  a bit to high for that ,  (walk up remic)  there is still lots of water pouring over the ledge at centre wave , usualy when this is dry remic is walk-up-able.

Re: Remic:

Right Mark. I seem to remember the river level to be lower than now too, in September 2007.

I'm still curious, wouldn't mind checking it out Thursday with a couple other adventurous minds...

It's looking like the water levels might make it worth at least one more week at Champlain. Anyone interesting in this Thursday at Champlain?

Just came back from Champlain and no one there.. waves are small and somwhat boring.. On the way home..seeing how i live 5 minutes from Dechesnes.. I stopped to check out the wave/hole in the Channel between the walls...

A few guys from CUKC and John from Levelsix were there... Its more of a hole and good for front/back surfs.. spins, cartwheels, felixs and such... Its a bit shallow so you have to tuck in when rolling and have to be quick... Heres a sh*tty pic i took with the cellphone..

Richard and I are most likely going to be there Tomorrow (Friday) at around 4 ish.. Ill be watching him since i sold my booster but ill try it a few times when hes taking a break! You guys feel free to join!!

I was at Champlain at 5:30, but no one was there. Guy named Martin came by to check the water level and said he was going to Deschenes, so I ended up there too. You may have saw me there, I was the one being flushed out  :) It was fun though. The water level is up to 58.6 now, the wall might have come in today. Too bad I'm going to Toronto after work.

Does anyone want to meet at the  Champlain bridge this Thursday (October 7th).  Tonia and I were up there last Sunday and the level was quite a lot higher then anything we had seen since we started going around July this past summer.  We would like to play more in the waves but feel that we probably need to go with more experienced paddlers.

Hi All,

I haven't been out much this year, so these are going to be "noob" questions about the present waves...

1) are you saying that it is possible to surf by the wall??  I'm sure there's no eddy - are you walking to the top each time or is there a rope?
or
2) are you playing out near the middle ?

I might try to get out tonight and am thinking about bringing the sea kayak to try to surf the middle, but if the waves at the wall are big enough to get an AllStar surfing, then...

Thanks,

Sean

The water level is 58.52 at the moment.. Nothing much to play in near the wall. No eddy either..

In the center waves... Well, some on here say they surf it.. It can be done in longer boats IE : Richard managed to catch it with my Booster and stayed on for about 15 seconds before getting flushed.. Otherwise.. There is the Training wave that can be surfed in shorter boats.. River left of the center wave but im not even sure its "in" at this level.

There were some paddlers yesterday between the walls at deschenes playspot!

HEres a list of whats "in" and whats not around the city and the Britania gauge website.

there is no more wave in the centre at champlain , it doesn't exist anymore , 10 years ago it was huge , rocks must have moved it since then , I have not seen it in years at all levels .

The only wave in the centre is the shallow training wave .
