I realise that Newcomer's Day is the next weekend on the Middle, but my chops aren't up for the Kippewa or Upper Pet. Anyone thinking of the Middle Saturday?

Hey Paul,
I'm a master at cramming now. I can give you some pointers ;D.
-
I'm definitely in for a little saturday adventure. Definitely need to get out for my first paddle of the year as well.

What's the level on the ottawa right now?
-
As of this afternoon the Ottawa was 10.5. It was almost 14.5 last Saturday.

HI Kelly, If I go tomorrow, it's got to be a late start, like 10 am or something later. I NEED!!!! sleep...

Hi Paul
OK by me. Let's play it by ear. Are you still interested Dave? Anyone else?
Kelly
-
Sure a later start is fine with me.
Are we talking 10am at River run or 10am at the Eagleson Park n Ride? I don't mind either one.
-
10am@ park ride
-
Excellent, see you guys there tomorrow morning.
-
Sounds good. Eagleson Park n Ride then at 10:00.

Sorry guys got too much Hwork tomorrow. Cancelling out... Might go to Champlain and practice with the c-1 for an hour or 2 instead.

Sooo......
I misunderstood Paul's posting to be a confirmation, but upon talking to him it was only an 'if, then' proposition. I have no reservations about Dave's ability to rescue me, which would be the most likely scenario, but if it comes to having to rescue Dave, I would need to have another paddler as well as myself. Of course the likelihood of this being necessary is small, but for me sh!t always happens. So If someone else confirms, I'm still in. If not, sorry Dave, I'm out.

That's alright ill catch you guys next time

I spent all of this week thinking the new members event was tomorrow, and so I find myself without paddling partners for this Sunday.
If anyone here who couldn't make today's run wants to run the middle tomorrow, I'm game. I'm skilled enough that I don't need to be babysat, and am getting pretty good at picking up pieces too.
I would prefer a departure early enough to be back in town for dinner, but am flexible.

I was following this thread with a bit of interest before heading off to do the Upper Petawawa.
Not paddling because you are concerned about the "what ifs" is not very good reason to stay home. It was a beautiful day to be out. A group of 3 is normally the minimum number to be on a river trip. That guideline can be somewhat thrown out when it comes to the Ottawa river because at this time of year there should be other parties on the river including the raft companies that will also help out if sh!t happens.
But don't rely on that ... Read the one of the sticky posts at the top of the forum.
Take a First Aid course, not just for the river outings but for your loved ones and friends.
Have a first aid kit. Not everybody in the group needs to bring one, but there should be one next to your throw rope in your gear bag.
Take a SWRT course or at least read a book.
One should have at least the knowledge on throwing the rope ... as well as what to do if you are the rescuee.
And practice in the known confines of the Ottawa River ... practice towing a boat, or paddling holding 2 paddles, or even towing a person.
New Members Day will most likely provide a few opportunities to practice some rescue techniques... just sit in the eddy below Lower NoName.
And no one will think you are silly if want to practice using a throw rope, the best place is below Butterfly.
I bet we could convince someone to body surf down through the rapids.

Guess I've been told
Nonetheless Larry, thanks for offering to come on the trip to be the unneccessary third person. This was merely a guideline professed by many CdBers when I joined. Glad you had a nice day. Yes I would have liked to have paddled, but my current skill set is not good enough to paddle with your group. I can only negotiate rivers where the 'less talented' paddlers hang out. I agree the rescue course is a great idea, but something I have had neither the time nor the money to do. As for posting, there are a lot of paddlers who never post trips, only join others. Maybe this is the way to go. This would eliminate putting up with this nonsense. Just imagine, if we all did this we wouldn't even need this board. I'll give you a call.

For those of you who have been following my saga here, I've just spoken with Larry and cleared things up. It was good intentions on his part just to say, don't let your defficiencies perceived or otherwise get in the way of your paddling. Do make sure that you do everything in your power to be safe on the river.
It's all good Larry
