Title: !!!!MINI BEAST FEAST!!!! -- July 23-24th
Post by: Paul Potvin on July 10, 2011, 10:57:52 PM
MINI BEAST FEAST? AKA THE BEAST WITHOUT THE FEAST!!!!

Coureurs de Bois? Mini Beast Feast is Saturday July 23 and Sunday the 24. Some people arrive Friday evening and make it a three-day event. Camping is at River Run which has all the amenities, minus the craziness of WT... 2-3 whole days to paddle. Mini Beast Feast is always minus the Feast (that one will be announced for August) ?So?.Bring your own food at your camp site or at attend the outdoor restaurant-you can get a weekend meal plan or go a la carte?). Groups can go down the Middle Channel, the Main Channel, do park and play, level dependent of course, or spend the weekend practicing their rolls and other river or play techniques! Rinse and repeat the next day! River Run has a quiet group camping section, is dog friendly, has hot showers, an outdoor and roof covered restaurant great for breakfast,  lunch or diner, a small store, a bar with a pool table, entertainment at night with big group bonfire going on, or make your own fire at your camp site... Please RSVP so that I can reserve a Coureurs de Bois Only Camp Site.

Here is a link for directions to River Run: http://www.riverrunrafting.com/resources/directions/  and the link to the RR's Homepage with a decription of all ammenaties and prices: http://www.riverrunrafting.com/

When you arrive at River Run or phone ahead for reservation, just say that you are with the CdB! I will be calling RR later this week and letting them know approximately how many CdB'ers will attend.

This is a Mini Beast Feast and is a more relaxed come and go as you like event. You do not have to wear your official CdB Hat or know the Secret CdB Hand Shake. You do not have to stay for the whole weekend (though you are invited to do so). You can fit Mini Beast feast it in your plans any way you like, knowing that you have a CdB ?Camp de Base? at River Run with familiar and welcoming CdB faces to greet you, paddle the river with you and share stories with you around the camp fire in the evening. All weekend!

We Hope You Can All Attend,

Cheers,

Paul Potvin
CdB Exec

PS Phill's Hole Rodeo, Yes People launching themselves in Phills "On Purpose"!!! is Sunday evening at 6PM for all interested. I have on good authority that some CdB members are competing in that very rodeo...[/b]

Not much play there but I really hope it does down a bit so babyface will be nice!

Got my info off their website? Perhaps they should ammend that eh?

What do you mean by "all-in"? 16.50$ Per day?

If had administrative issues with RR in the past. Last year Richard and I called and asked for shuttle. They said shuttle was 10$ Per person on the phone. We got there, They charged us WAY more for parking, access and shuttle fees...OVerall, it was a bit over 50$  for both IIRC and that was no camping involved.. The guy who "shuttled" us was an asshole and complained the whole way up to the put in saying they dont offer shuttle service and we were wasting his time etc etc..

Paddler Fees
Take-out ? $6
RiverRun Rafting charges a minimal fee for the use of our property as a take-out location.
Overnighter ? $16.50 / $27.50
Spend the night in one of our beautiful campgrounds, there are five to choose from.
Includes take-out . Overnighter with buffet breakfast $27.50. Visit our camping page for further details.
Shuttle - $15 per person per trip (2 person minimum) Includes holiday Mondays on long weekends

Above prices are for paddlers - which would include kayaker, C1, C2, open boaters

If you are arriving Saturday morning to paddle for the day, camp overnite and paddle the next day = one take out fee and one night of camping = $6 + $16.50
Forget about using the shuttle service unless there is absolutely no-one else around ... and when does that happen in the summer?

If consider yourself a rafter or hanging around the rafters the above rates do not apply. Go to the rafters price page and it will cost you $19 for the use of RR property.
Apparently this John person went to the wrong page ... So don't follow his line through the rapids.

This is where I had gone on the website which makes total sense while browsing their page. I didnt bother checking under Resources as I didnt think Camping / Access fees would be under this tab.

Thanks for the price list correction Larry.

And following somebody else's line down a rapid isnt such a great idea. Paddlers should be able to choose their own line. If the person youre following messes up his line, so will you.  ;)

Paul, I have always been fun of both your humor and business acumen. The club deals that you have negotiated in the past made me feel  a winner time and time again (I GOT A DEAL!!!)... Having said that it was pretty deserted at RR last weekend, which made it a good time to go camping. Perhaps when the economy picks up we could try to get some firewood out of a mass registration??? But until then, we could make club arrangements for the firewood. Either an on-site collection jar or CDB cheque. I'm bringing this up because it seems that it's always and individual generosity that keeps the bonfire going.
Just a thought.

I wouldn't keep a jar of money around. I'll just steal it. I say just bring an ax and some beer, I'm sure someone will go postal on the surrounding forest. That or we can burn all those tags I have to put around my life jacket to show that I can use the RR take out. There's probably a lot of them on the floor of my car.

The coffee cups alone will keep it going for an hour or two.

Title: Re: !!!!MINI BEAST FEAST!!!! -- Free Wood!
Post by: Paul Potvin on July 18, 2011, 08:05:57 PM
Bill Schlarb has some fireplace wood to give for free! The wood is beside his house in Ottawa. If anyone would like to save a few bucks before attending Mini Beast Feast, please contact Bill via this forum to arrange for a pickup. Otherwise it is $8 for a bag of wood at RR. I'm not sure they would be too pleased if campers hacked away at the park ground trees to collect firewood.... hum....

See you at MBF!

Hi Andy,

Per all your questions...TBD.. Seriously this is not an overly organized event, more of a show an enjoy time. By the end of the week others will post their availability and willingness to carpool Saturday. Depending on the number of participant they're could be 3-4 different events going on, Middle Channel, Main Channel or Park & Play at Push Buton or even @ Baby face....

Good of you to ask first. You just tossed the first ball of the game!

Cheers,

Paul:)

I (and possibly Paul and others?) will go Friday afternoon and play a bit, then drink, camp, and be there for the rest of the weekend.

Do not bring wood from other places, invasive insects are already a problem in Ontario. But don't worry, the club checkbook will fund firewood!

River Run fees are reasonable considering what you get. As I wrote earlier, just the fact that someone is watching over the parking lot is worth a lot. Worth 342$ in my case, after a$$h0le broke my right side mirror when parked by the Rouge (Harrington canyon section). That's even though the owner had specifically given us his permission to park there and use his property!

That rant voiced, I'd like to report that for the Rouge canyon section, the landlord was very friendly and did give us kayakers permission to use his land as a take-out. But as he requested, just park by the bridge so that partying yahoos don't think it's ok to park anywhere near his land. He's ok with kayakers, we just go in and out and don't hang out drinking... So if you're there and some fellow comes in a pick-up truck to talk to you, be nice and thank him (if he is indeed the landlord) for letting you use the take-out, assure him you're just passing and park by the bridge. People there are in fact mostly nice and realise that the economy of their region will soon be fueled by tourism. For instance, when walking back, another local resident gave me a ride in his car after the run, even though I was soaking wet!  But there is one or more residents near the bridge that may need 'readjustment'...

See you all this weekend!

Paul , I beleive it is illigal to transport firewood , I may be wrong , however we woulden't want the ash bug to destroy all the trees in paddlers meadow ,.......wait a minitue , there are no trees in paddlers meadow , forget the firewood , bring some trees to plant !   Shade is nice when its +40

Point taken Christian and Mark. Thank you for that bit of education which I admit freely I had not considered at all.... Whoops! Looks like Jean Nicholas will be joining us Friday as well!
For shade we have the club's patio tent and I will also bring a tarp.

If I read it right I register and tell them that I am with the CdB Whitewater Paddling Club and they will take my money for the camping and all other things will work themselves out through the course of the weekend. I will be comming from Toronto.

Hi all,
I would be very keen on carsharing, either Friday (leaving Ottawa not significantly earlier than 3 pm, ideally a bit later), or Saturday morning. If we would want to use my fuel-wasting monster car, we'd better be a large group of at least 5 people, and it would be good if somebody had some straps to fix the boats on my rooftop since I've never done that before.
Liz, when are you planning to drive out?
Dani

Whoever arrives Friday says that they are with the cdb group camping in the paddlers' meadow. RR won't reserve a specific spot for us, group is too small. So whoever arrives first please choose a nice spot near tables! I will try to arrive first but someone might beat me to it!

Sunrise run. Sounds lovely and oh so very early. How about we aim to get on the river by 11am, miss most of the rafts. Those who are coming in can either meet at the put in at that time or at 10:30 at the campground.

Thought I'd take the lead on this one, what the hey. Gotta earn the right to wear my dollar store tiara as CdB vice princess somehow.

A Coup d'etat is certainly welcome but first consider what you would look like in a tiara.

No problems having more than one party start and finish at different times...

That being said though....10:30AM at the campground sounds just fine to me! Meet you there, Oh Vice Tiara Wearing President....(OVTWP)

To misquote Lady Gaga, I was not born this way so no blue blood. The CdB voted me into the vp position against my will so they get what they get. In my snarly acceptance speech I only promised to wear a tiara and encourage less androgynous club fleeces. One-size-does-not fit-all are ever my watch words.

But I digress from your query, I can pull out of the hood whenever you want. The earlier the better. Some people may go down to the river that day if you'd like to go. There must be some back door you can sneak out of at work. Leave a hot cup of coffee on your desk and they'll think, you're there. My brother is a human resources vp and he told me that one.

Hi Adam and lariza,

As you can see multiple plans for park and play and river running are evolving. Pick and choose! Seruiously I will be at Whispers tonight at around 8pm. I might even paddle at Champlain around 6pm. If you want definite plans meet with us at Whispers or try to accomodate your schedule to one ofthe posted times. If you arrive at 10:30am, (I'm an 10:30 AM meet at RR, but flexible) you come and run, play the river with us and you set up camp  at the end of the day?

The level being steady for now at around 1 1/2, I will be going dowm the middle with Adam, the Tibor Clan and Bill. Others may/will choose the Main Channel, it's all good as long as everyone has fun.

See you Saturday morn @ 10:30AM.

To add to Paul's TR

There were numerous conversations with Phil, but not any outright arguments - seems Phil was in a good mood. Tibor and Thomas Dej as per usual, were the focal point for the apres paddle socializing. The sausages were awesome - hit the spot. Thanks guys. Thanks Julia for the use of your bug shelter. Louis D. has taken the spot of current singles ping pong champion over Tibor D. after they both dumped their partners shortly into the doubles competition (Paul and me respectively). The competitors complained vehemently that the equipment was far below international standards so I wouldn't be surprised to see a rematch in the near future. Thanks Wendy for the nice line down "Colly" and Andy apologizes to Liz for having his unmanned boat surf along with with you (on Colly) ;D. Nice to see Dave Candice and Amily Jackson. Finally, we finished off in style with a Poutine run at the Four Corners just as we were heading home. Give it a try if you haven't - local beef for their burgs and local potats for the poutine.

Couldn't ask for more - gorgeous weather, good river level (at least for running), and seeing friends, some of whom haven't been out in a while.

Chantal and I had a good time as well.
Lots of sunshine and brunt skin, but fresh night of camping.
Great to see everyone again.
Warming my heart to see the Dej's gang playing at S Bend and doing so well down the other rapids.

Chantal and I went sea kayaking above the put in on Sunday, then watched Phil swallow people and rafts, then there was an epic sea kayak decent down Horse Shoe and slowly back to the car on the back side to the put-in with a good current handling workout for Chantal.

Peachy weekend!

I think this mini-beast feast was more busy than many beast feasts!  It was so great to see everyone!
Thanks to everyone for 'coordinating my stuff' (Robert, Dave & Candace, Kelly, Rob) , the beer (Dom!) and for making me laugh:)

Hey guys! turns out I camped and Horizon X with CJ. We headed there Thursday for an evening paddle but we didnt quite make it till dark.. So Brandon CJ and I made it a moonlit paddle. Romantic! Then we got woken up at 7am and asked to safety kayak for the trip. We ran the main and the only person we saw was Adam. Seeing that there was a 8 group trip and plenty of hot college girls.. we stayed at HX for the night and were asked to safety again the next day.. CJ's knee being shattered to pieces from jumping a 100ft bridge... We decided to Solo raft it just the two of us in a 13" raft and set safety for the others. We had a mean surf in Horseshoe while all the WT were trying hard to get in but did quite make it! Lots were cheering! Thought Id see some of you guys but it was 1pm. We also got trashed in Chopping block and I cut up my knee big time! We had a really steezy line down Coliseum as well! Sweet ferries and back ferries! Also awesome surfs at Blacks! Then I headed back to camp for more Hot college girls and food... Then left for Montreal as I had planned! Sorry I didnt get to see any of you guys! Most definately will at Beast Feast!  ;D
