Title: paddling during the week
Post by: liz edwards on July 11, 2011, 02:25:08 PM
Is anyone thinking of padding during the week? The river is down to two and a quarter. Hope it drops some more for a park and play.

Hi
I am new to the club and am interested in doing some kayaking. I would be looking for something not  to difficult as I don't have a bullet proof roll. I an close to the Island Park. Thursday would be my preference but lets see what other are interested in.

Nope! The 148 is still getting fixed in two spots.. in Luskville and in Quyon! Will be a while too! They have a detour in Luskville on a side road and its 1 way at a time.. We stood there for 35 minutes waiting. In quyon its a bit quicker.. maybe a 10 minute detour? On the way back last Friday, I turned in Shawville..Took the 366 up to the 105 and then got out in Old Chealsea then back to Aylmer.

I guess Thursday would be the best day as it is already Tuesday. Friday is not that optimal for me. I'm hoping someone is a better paddler than me. I'm thinking the Ottawa but want to know what others think.

Hi Liz et al,

Definitely interested.  Are you considering Ottawa (middle, main, stay and play @ Mcoys) or Gatineau?  I am open to any.  I can provide a ride to Gatineau easily since I live in Wakefield.

I am up for either.  The Gatineau is at 11, which is a nice level so I'm told. I don't remember after a summer of plus 5. I've tried to check if the water has gone done at the Ottawa. It is still two and a quarter which means there is nothing to play on if people are looking for that.

So we have two!  If the level drops on the Ottawa then Mcoys becomes a fun easy option.

So when we are talking Thursday are we talking pack a lunch kind of thing?  I am good for that as well.

I have paddled both rivers (Ottawa Main 4 times levels 1.5 thru 11, Middle 2 times, Gatineau 4 times levels 22 thru 12) this season.

Whatever you are most comfortable with.  Gatineau is a nice paddle and there should be a wave with some level of eddy service on Loggers Dance (12.5).  11 should be better.

A couple of waves on river right of High Tension (navigate around a couple of small holes).

The Wall is a lot fun at this level.  The green tongue at high water disappears and you can try and surf the wall if you mind a little trashing coming off :)  Always the fun zig zig on river right to sneak it.

I'm definitely paddling the Ottawa probably main channel Wednesday July 13 meeting 297 Lanark Ave (NE Churchill & Scott) ~12:20 for car pooling before departure.  Best to telephone for confirmation if you wish to join.  Shuttle arranged.

I think definitely need at least four for the gatineau and also to run the Ottawa. I really don't feel like driving all that way by myself and we need a shuttle. Also I am not particularly good at rescuing people in my 2Fun. I'm great at picking up paddles that people drop but the small boat sinks when dragging others.

We can see what the level is for park and play. It wasn't posted yet.

I completely understand.  Park and play is always fun option.  I am pretty good at the rescue and first aid but prefer to paddle rivers in group of 4.  Much better for safety and recovery of people and equipment.

There is always something to play in at mcoys.  Wait till later today and check level?  Coordinate tonight if something looks good?

Oh and thought this guideline would help for the Ottawa main. Paul, You should make a post and sticky it and perhaps add in for the middle channel too!

Here:

On McKoys:

Baby Face: +1 and lower. -1 is probably about the best level though.

Left Side Horseshoe: Lower levels (0 and lower) are generally the most fun, but its decent from roughly +2 and lower iirc

Right side horseshoe: Most enjoyable as wave hole at +3 to +4

Corner Wave: Good from +6 and lower

Phils: most pit like at 3-4, best wave like level at about 12

Sattlers: its great from roughly 15 and above, although its drop on only. the higher the level the better. I think there is a magic level where there is eddy service but the wave is flushy around 15.5

7-up hole or 7/8th hole: best from 7-8

On the lorne:

Garb: -2 to -0.5.... -1 is my favourite level.

Push Button: its straight up a hole from 0 to -1, and becomes more of a wave the lower you go.

Waikiki: I think 8ish is best

Buseater: surfable from 13 to 17. 13 becomes trashy. 16-17 is best. Correct me if i'm wrong anyone

On Butchers Knife:

Chopping Block: giver whenever you feel like it. 0 is probably a better wave like level. This rapid mellows out in high water

Lunch Stop waves: great for a surf kayak at high levels, like 18 and higher

On Coli:

I don't really remember when kahuna is fun. I remember surfing it at 15 or so and it was rowdy. Gladiator I don't know either.

On Blacks:

Left side: good at -3 and lower

Right side: probably best around 1.5 - 2

I was thinking corner wave and near the tongue on horseshoe.  The traffic is pretty hectic with the rafts.  I was playing on left side horseshoe and corner wave @ 2.5.  Little sketchy but beats not paddling :)

We can keep our fingers crossed on this one. A park and play is always good and maybe we could use one car if there's only three of us. I am happy trying left side horseshoe. Right side has a nasty pit that I want nothing to do with. I'm not coordinated enough to stay out of it. Sigh if only pushbutton was in.

Lemme know.

Park and play it is!  Here is the plan:
I will drive my truck which can seat 4 passengers and myself.
I will bring cooler enough for all.  Pack lunch.
Pick up at Bate island 9am?  Open to suggestions on this.
Return when we can't paddle anymore?
Should get to mcoys around 1030.

I'm in Barrhaven, so best place to carpool from for me is Eagleson OC Transpo.
How about 9:30 from there?
