The CdB Beast Feast will be at the Bonnet Rouge Camping Site near Maniwaki.
The date is the weekend of August 13 - 14.
Some people head up Friday evening to camp rather than rushing around Saturday morning.
Check out the Bonnet Rouge website for directions, http://www.bonnetrougerafting.com/
DO NOT MISS IT!!! IT IS THE PREMIER EVENT OF THE CDB CLUB!
MANY PADDLERS THAT YOU SELDOM SEE AND OF COURSE ALL THE REGULARS WILL BE THERE!
It will be a weekend of camping and running the Gatineau River which is running at lower levels this year and thus will be easier to paddle, even for the newest paddlers.
Great beach for sun bathing, swimming and playing (volleyball, etc..) and great surfing right at the camping site!
We'll have prizes from Paddle Shack & Level Six
Bring your significant others, rafting escort-trip can be arranged for the non paddlers!
Once again Larry Wong will be our Beast Master, preparing a 20lb.+ side of roast beef for the Saturday evening potluck dinner
Contributions for the pot luck can be any of the following: appetizers, salads, munchies, desserts ... booze wine, beer, shots if you so desire.
We need volunteers to take care of the corn and potatoes, contact someone on the executive if you`d like to help out.
Prior to the downriver portion of the day, some kitchen prep has be done with some helping hands, and a corn husking circle created after the day on the river. You will need to bring your own plate and cutlery.
Please reply to this post to let us know how many will be attending
Thanks, CdB Exec

I won't miss this highlight of the summer and am planning to arrive Friday evening.
Dani
-
Yes! I am heading up Friday as well and plan to help Larry with prep before and after paddling. It was a highlight from last summer, though it'll be hard to beat mini-beast feast this year!!
Can't wait!!
Sandra
-
I will be there for sure! :)
-
Whenever one says "volunteer" there always this awkward silence ...
I kept notes from last years event on the stuff and tasks with regards to "Team Potatoes" and "Team Corn"
Corn
duties ? husk corn, boil water, cook the corn
bag(s) of corn to feed 40 ish
propane
corn roaster kit ? need to be transported to/from Bonnet Rouge
oven mitts for pot
BBQ long tongs
serving platter/tray
condiments for corn
Potatoes ? washed and wrapped before folks go paddling
potatoes ? to feed 40ish
aluminum foil
scrubber to clean potatoes
basin for washing potatoes
nail/spike to poke holes in potatoes prior to wrapping
tongs
cooler to hold potatoes
condiments --- sour cream this year???
of course many hands make light work.
In reviewing last years postmortem, Team Fish was added late in the game and prepared a fillet of Salmon. Can't see why someones can't do it again this year ...

Don't worry Larry, I will bring my BBQ Thongs!
Paul ;)
-
Tibor, Tomas, Marc and I will be there! I can help with corn or potatoes.

Paul ;)
Oh no!!!!! Please don't!
thong (noun): a brief garment for the lower body that exposes the buttocks, consisting of a strip of fabric passing between the thighs and attached to a band around the waist.
BTW, for those who might be interested--I'll bring a playboat AND a sea kayak for the runs!
--C.

I am a very good potato peeler/wrapper!
I volunteer!
Paul
;D

It's just that when I think 'Paul-thongs-BBQ' (see above) I cringe a bit at the images that come to my mind...
-
Abstinence prolong?e Christian?
-
Someone please save Paul from himself. I will also be up on Friday and just what kind of barbecue lingerie I will bring is none of your damn business.

Abstinence prolong?e Christian?
I wrote 'cringe'; not the most appropriate term I realise. The graphic depiction below might help identify the feeling:

I tried!

So you DO have special BBQ lingerie too? Wow. I feel like I missed the boat...
-
Please note, I do know the difference between tongs and a thong....

After a rather unexciting flat-water weekend, I'll definitely insist on thongs instead of tongs. Bad enough they installed those catholic changing cabins at Bonnet Rouge.
By the way, if somebody happened to find a lonely black paddle (no clue what brand, borrowed it from a friend who might not be a friend anymore after learning I've lost his paddle) on the Rouge, I'll be happy to bring it back to its owner...

Hey!
I am still on the fence about attending Beast Feast this year. My friend as a cottage weekend planned the same weekend on the Gul and apparently it is awesome for practicing. Anyway, I am leaning 60% toward going to the Beast Feast. I that is the case, I'll take care of bringing the corn like I did last year. However, I was not the one who brought the bug pot and the burner and I don't own one. Who brought it last year?
Annie
-
Wearing a tong could be rather ouchy. 'Specially in a boat. And if you have tried this Paul, I don't want to hear about it.
-
I for sure cannot attend on Saturday as I am taking a group riverboarding down the Ottawa Main Channel. If we dont camp there Sunday, I might just make it up to the Gat! If not, have a blast guys! 8)

Hi
The corn burner and pot set is at my place at the present moment. There will be no room in my car since it will be filled with "Beast" cooking equipment.
Maybe someone from the West end of Ottawa can provide transport ...
A propane tank is also needed

I'm coming, too. Plan to be there Friday night...
Willing to help.

Corn Purchase: Don Millward has volunteered
Corn cooking equipment transportation: Don Millward has volunteered
Don absolutely doesn't want anything to do with cooking duties. So that will be left for others to organize.

1 beastfeaster coming ... sat am [is there an official meeting time at Bonnet?]
The big question is ... I don't know about thongs but ... should I bring my canoe?
;]
PS: room for one person and several boats if anyone needs a ride.
-
Hey Glissboy
I'm interested in splitting gas with you, but when are you coming back? I need to go up and back on Sat.
Kelly
-
Good question... what *is* the anticipated meet time for the Saturday trip?
\MR
-
How about 10:30 am at Bonnet Rouge on Saturday
See how long it takes to organize a shuttle ...

Hey guys I want to come up on the Saturday morning and back that night, anyone interested in sharing a ride?
-
As Glissboy is likely coming with a canoe (from Montreal??), I'll bring extra padding and protective equipment _and_ extra pair of eyes to keep watch.
One pair should still be in my brother-in-law's head sockets; Jean-Michel is the name.
Some may remember him from 2 years ago and with that 25 years old long boat and plenty of after mat bruises.
And from last year with a brand spanking new Jackson river runner and a lot less bruises.
Now, just to be on the safe side to cope with Glissboy's ability to control that drakkar of his, I plan to bring a third set of eyes.
That set is pretty much untrained.
Therefore, we should be at the Bonnet Rouge for lunch on Sat and then, at that rapid, practice escape strategies when facing rapid approaching drakkars in preparation to the next day's challenges and descent.
Also,
Last year, the salmon was swiftly dealt with.
Christian, same thing as last year?

Hi Chris
I'm also coming up and back on Sat. I have room for one (Honda civic) or I'd split gas with you in your vehicle.
Kelly (819) 682-1693
-
Kelly, who is going to play guitar if you're not staying for the evenings??? :'(
-
The lunch boat is not coming, there are apparently less swimmers out there than i'd hoped for ... you'll all be 'safe' for now ...
-
It looks like Wendy G. and I will be there for Sat paddling and dinner. Returning home Sunday morning.
We will help out with prep or cleanup.
Sorry for the late response, I was unsuccessful convincing Dave to participate.
Jennifer
-
I am going up Sat Morning and coming back after supper.
I can take 1 comfortably, and 2 if you don't have too much extra stuff.

Home 829-1008 (Friday evening after 6pm)
Jim,
-
I'm looking for a ride there in the morning. I'll call you later Jim. Candace and Amelie will probably come in the afternoon for dinner and take me home.
-
We have a new bug tent if needed and prizes (fun ones) which will be distributed somewhat purposefully and at the random will of the vice princess. Input into the recipients of non-reserved items is welcome as the process will give us some idea of who is worthy of wearing the tiara next when the election of the exec rears its head in November. Kind of like picking the next Dalai Lama only with the absence of any intellect or spirituality.
-
Hi Jim,
I am planning to go up and back on Sat. as well. Same sort of time frame as you. Do you still have room in your car?
I will also help out with the post paddle prep.
Bruce S.

If anyone heading up Saturday morning still has room, I need a ride from the downtown area. Heather's heading up later in the day so I only need to pack my boating gear and won't need a ride back.

thank you very much for a well planned event. Great food, great people and great paddling.
-
Great Beast Feast Larry! Everything was well done. It was great seeing everyone paddling the same river at the same time.
Thank you again!
Paul:)
-
Thank you everyone!
I had an excellent time ;-)
I am very glad that I met club members.
You are an awesome bunch!
I had a Blast!
Now, i'll work on my roll!!
Cheers,
Caroline

It was rather excellent. We found a lone bootie on the road on the way home and it looked rather sad, wet and smelly so we felt sorry for it and took it with us. Either some one can claim this size nine cutie or it can become the official "drink from the bootie" vessel. Sufficiently icky enough for the purpose.
Just what constitutes a drink from a bootie anyway? I thought a beer was the price of rescue. As for that awful thing, we'd have to do with Larry, that's just too much.
-
Thanks for a great day of paddling and a great supper guys!
So I may have let a couple things near the picnic tables on saturday night, I'm sure the beer found a good home, but did anyone happen to pick up a tupperware container that isn't theirs?
Thanks
Chris

Describe the container... I picked up one! --C.

Hello all.
The weekend was great, and despite the intermittent rain, Larry managed to cook us an amazing meal! With the help of a large group of people of course...
Kayakers are a very independent sort indeed... The suggestion to get the Bonnet Rouge bus/trailer for the shuttle was not originally met with high enthusiasm. Still, after using that service for the two days and seeing how things were made simpler and easier on the paddlers, it's clear that from now on this should be part of the Beast Feast, and paid for by the club. It's only 96$ per day, and that's really a small fraction of the total food and prizes costs for the weekend. As a comparison, myself I spent over 250$ just for prizes. That does not include what I spent for corn, potatoes, salads, condiments, snacks etc.
Finally, let's thank Paddle Shack for the amazing prizes they gave us. I hope that Julia will be able to enjoy her new dry top for years to come!
Cheers!
--Christian
-
Yes! Special thanks to Larry for being the 'Beast Master'. You rock!
Also, thanks to Liz, Christian and Paul for organizing behind the scenes. Much appreciated (hope I didn't miss anyone else ::). Seeing the boys load the shuttle the first day was quite the sight! Almost worth the $96...
The people in this club are almost as much fun as paddling.
Thanks for all the fun and laughter.

I think the only one we have left to thank is
...
Mr Rototiller.
-
Hi
Happy everyone had a good time and thanks for participating ...
In the end I only cooked the potatoes and beef, all the other food was prepared by everyone else ... Oh just trying to be ever so humble. The beef was the easy part, baking the potatoes was the challenge. I made notes for the next time.
The shuttle was new wrinkle in the Beast Feast weekend.
Pros:
nobody got lost to the put in
the group got on the river at the same time
a later start Saturday ... good for those coming up from Ottawa just for the day ***
everybody gets off the river at about the same time for cocktail hour.
cost is insignificant.
It felt like a CdB club adventure
It takes about 30 minutes to load 26 boats on the trailer and bus ... the process was a bit smoother on Sunday
Cons:
"herding cats"
*** This used to be a weekend event when people came up Friday evening for 2 nights of camping. I hope this new wrinkle doesn't change that.
Some of the photos that ended up on my camera. Liz was playing photographer for a while ..

I enjoyed the beast feast so much that I may have had a borderline too high dose of Whiskey, and now I don't remember who brought those delicious lamb sausages and where they were from. I'm dying to eat them again - please help!
-
The hunk of meat and sausages were purchased @ Brian's Butchery ... in the Ikea neighbourhood.
http://www.briansbutchery.com/ (http://www.briansbutchery.com/)
All sausages are made on site, quickly frozen since no preservatives are added.
Phone ahead, just to make sure they have packages left.

Thanks for the info, especially for the tip to call beforehand! The lamb sausages were indeed sold out until next Thursday - so I'll have to try to be patient, not really one of my strong sides...
