Title: Petite Nation this weekend.
Post by: JohnCyr on December 06, 2011, 07:04:28 AM
Well..we still have warm weather..but the water is cold..Swimming and/or scouting rapids become a bit of a pain with temperatures like this. I though it would be a great end of season run as most of the members on here plan on putting their gear away in the next week or already have. Its a relatively easy Class 3 run with no holes and easy lines. The level right now is 20 cms which makes for plenty of fun. its being steadily going up in the past 7 days so my hopes are the gauge will have reached 25 cms by the weekend.

My plan is to head out there and stay at my parents for the weekend. Ill have my truck so its easy to run shuttle. Either way, I will be there and plan on running it solo of no one shows up.

Im also looking to borrow/rent a boat from someone, hopefully 70+ gallons for the weekend, as paddleshack have nothing above 60 gallons right now.

Please let me know if you are willing to do so.

Thank you,

Here are some photos of the river I have at 35 cms:

ARGH!!! La Petite Nation, I love it!
You will have to get down 3 times mate cause I will miss it too.  The ice climbing season starts next weekend so my kayak season definitely ended last Sunday.

Torn between 2 passions, life is full of difficult decisions.  8)

Not to hijack but....
What ice is in this early?  I would like to get back into ice, I have only been out twice since moving here (and two knee surgeries in the past five years has also put a damper on it), but used to get out on ice when ever I could in the rockies.

Back on topic....

Are you thinking of paddling on Saturday or Sunday?  I would like to try to get out at least once more this year, and it looks like it may start to freeze up soon.

Todd.. most likely both days.
If I go up there, (my parents have a farm and the river crosses our land) I will most likely stay there all weekend. So really its up to you.. But I need a boat first.

There are also some more fun stuff 30 kms north.. A couple drops actually Id like to check out too!

Graham and I may be convinced to join you and we might be able to work something out in boats. It depends on where the river is. How far would it be from Pembroke?

You started it so I hijack too, sorry JN.  We drive far away from here up north in Charlevoix.  There is a thin sheet of ice covering the classic lines and I bet that the cold temperature of this week will fatten them enough to be climbable Saturday. I may as well loose my bet and end up drinking scotch all the weekend regretting not to be on the Petite Nation with you guys.

Well then I will really try to convince him to come but if the tempurature is below -2 I am not sure if he is going to go but he bought himself a new dry top so he should be ok and he practised his roll with his boat so I think he might be good we will see tomorrow. ;)

Just so people are aware.. the petite nation over 80 cms is a whole other river. Some of you have only paddled it a high water.. some of you lower...

Heres a video of the first canyon at over 80 cms to compare with the one posted above at 25 cms.

Yep, it's different at high water. Below are 2 photos of the 1st canyon in the spring, when I ran it with Ivan. It was the first time we were there! Looks impressive. --C.

Well I still thing it is going to be one of my best rivers this year, even thought the water isn't the cleanest, and who thought that we would be paddling in December! :o

Alright folks!

Sunday

River: Petite Nation http://www.quebecwhitewater.com/en/river-level?task=view&id=9
Time: 11:30 AM
Place: Meet at the bridge take out: http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=plaisance+quebec&hl=en&ll=45.650716,-75.112334&spn=0.003607,0.006877&sll=45.053774,9.695142&sspn=0.233321,0.44014&vpsrc=6&hnear=Plaisance,+Papineau+Regional+County+Municipality,+Quebec&t=h&z=17
Take the 148 all the way to the flashing light in Plaisance, turn left on Mtee Papineau all the way to chemin des cascades and turn left. Past the woodbridge will be a parking spot on the right.

Directives: Folks, I hate to be a pain about this but keep in mind were in Mid-December. Have your float bags, throw line, proper cold weather gear. Some rapids are long and swimming at this time of year could have major consequences if setup isnt proper, even if this is only class 3.

We will meet at 11:30, get dressed, leave our clothes in the dry car and hop on 8kms upstream to the put in.
We can either run the canyon many times and then paddle down OR we can do 2 runs of the river. Well see how we feel on that day!

The land is frozen, therefore, the water will be clean at this time of year.

Confirmed so far:

Me
Daniel
Caro
Martin
Richard

Wow! Weird! Petite nation has been dry all summer and its now sitting at 26.5 cms and going up +1 cms an hour today! We might get higher water which means more fun! :) 35 cms is quite different than at 25! Fun fun!
Title: Re: Petite Nation this weekend.
Post by: Martink on December 09, 2011, 07:15:26 PM
Yes John lots of fun fun fun if you don't mind, we will see when we get there but can we run the river 2 times its really up to you but me and Richard would like to run it twice but it dose not really matter, just a suggestion!

Post by: JohnCyr on December 10, 2011, 09:39:21 AM
Well.. If we dont mess around and play too much, it could be donw if we put in at noon. The first canyon is the best for sure.. so walking it up would also be a great option! Well see! :)

the level is now 34 cms by the way! Much nice than 25!  ;D

Ok but do you think I will have any trouble on the first canyon. :P
Title: Re: Petite Nation this weekend.
Post by: coolfarmer816 on December 10, 2011, 04:18:26 PM

Martin and Richard: I did it maybe 20 times and if we stop scout the canyon and the hell's gate there is no way that we could do 2 runs.... maybe two times the canyon because tis a short walk but not more,..

See you tomorow with all the sun!

Oh ya btw John what is better for cameras because the Contour HD 1080p is on sale at amazon for 150$ and go pro is not.

I have the contour.  I like it, but you have to get a waterproof case for it; and the case is a little bulky on the side of your helmet.

Post by: Martink on December 11, 2011, 08:27:00 PM
Oh thnx I looked up some reviews and they say that the contour has a low battery life. Not sure yet but I think i am going to go with the go pro hero.
