Title: Blakeney Rapids SUNDAY March 18th
Post by: JohnCyr on March 14, 2012, 07:13:18 PM
They are clear of ice and pretty nice according to Joel Kowalski!

I think this would be a great spot for a spring club outing!
Supposed to be nice and warm Sunday.
Multiple channels ranging from class 2 to 5 for different types of paddlers.
Great opportunity to dust off for spring rivers to come and if there is interest, rope throwing and a few safety basics..And if you feel like it ; Push your limits a bit! I think this is a great spot to do all of this!

Say... 11:00 AM / Noon-ish!?

Blakeney rapids are located in Almonte.
Its a park and run kinda place. You can walk back up easily along the trails.
5 different channels to choose from ranging from class III to V at different water levels.
It is not the kind of place you want to swim or spend too much time upside down.
Not the kind of place to paddle alone.
There are pin spots and undercuts at certain spots.
Its the spring warmup place for guys like Ben Marr, Joel Kowalski, Pat Camblin and the likes...Nonetheless challenging for a guy like me or any intermediate paddler. ;D

Here is the map:

Well... there is one easy channel with a sweet boof at the end and some class 2 below to practice ferries and such! I think its a great spot to pick what you feel like running..wether you wanna keep it simple or push your limits! I think you should come! The more the merrier and safer if you wanna push your limits but would want safety set up below a drop.

Here are a few shots i took while teaching a buddy the basics in the class 2 stuff.

I think there are certain channels, streams you guys would be comfortable doing . Something different than Champlain and a good place to dust off for spring rivers. Its not like the Ottawa at all...Think of the Petite Nation, with a bit more rocks, smaller eddies and a thousand possibilities..

Take a look tonight! You cans cout from the bridge and road for the river right channels and from the trails for the left ones! 15 minutes there would give you an idea!

I think we should ALL go! The whole club! Plenty of stuff to choose from, good place to practice throwing a rope and safety stuff IMO!

Exactly what part of Blakeney is class 2?
I do not think this is a place to "dust off" for spring runs
And throw roping is somethign practiced when it doesn't count, Blakeney isn't a good spot for this.

Perhaps I couldve been a little more clear when I mentionned class 2... Technically.. ALL Channels range from III to V.

I said in my post directed towards Jonyak that the wave trains below the main channel and far right is class 2. The stuff there is smaller than champlain or sewer wave.

As for safe spot for safety technique well.. those channels are an easy and very safe spot to swim down and throw a rope as it ends in a lake. Id rather learn how to throw a rope there rather than learn while your buddy is stuck in a hole getting beat...

If youre a class V boater, Blakeney is a spot to dust off for creeking season.

If youre an intermediate boater like me, Its a great spot to either run the main channel on the left to get the blood pumpin or try some harder lines if you feel like it.

If youre a beginner, then stay the hell away from everything but the little wave trains at the bottom.

I think its an all around good spot to dust off for the class V boaters, pick some easier or harder lines for the intermediate paddler.. and great spot to watch others and/or practice some ferries at the bottom for the beginners.

I respect your opinion...I was just giving mine and posted a few pictures for reference too...

People can go check it out/ scout and decide wether or not they wanna run it! If not..then hit up the Playfairville section on the Carp as its not too far.. Its not like i told people to go there and run shit blind..which would be stupid anyway as there is a tree blocking the whole channel above where i pinned my boat last year on one of the river right channels.. Paddlers should ALWAYS scout carefully, especially in the spring.

Here are some pics from today. There are no pics of the class IV-IV+ stuff on the right as I didnt feel comfortable running it and decided not to go.

Hope this clears things up a bit.

Harder lines where us intermediate boaters pushed our limits:

nice photos , yes , Blakney is the A-1 spot , I like the main long run on the left , you can make it as easy or hard as you want (catching the micro eddies) lots of fun .

Thanks! Im a little more skilled than last year so I had more fun! I ran than main long left run 3-4 times, its alot of fun! Also ran the far right creek/chute. My buddy Alex ran the second far left chute...Todd, CJ, and peter were playing in the big boy stuff off to the right channels! That might be me next year when my skills have improved! Or maybe later this year.. who knows!  :D
