Title: Spring Paddling: Riviere Jean-Venne/Ouareau Saturday March 31
Post by: Bill Schlarb on March 29, 2012, 11:10:28 PM
Hi folks,

Based on the recent levels, we're planning to run the Jean-Venne/ Ouareau combo this Saturday.
The run is class 3 + 4 with the Jean-Venne being a low volume technical run and is a tributary of the Ouareau.
The Ouareau a larger volume river with a mix of pool/drop and continuous whitewater.

You can find descriptions at:
http://www.cartespleinair.org/Canot/05/JeanVenneBelisle2009.pdf
http://www.cartespleinair.org/Canot/05/OuareauChertseyLeduc.pdf

John Cyr posted this link to a video from the Quebec Whitewater site:
http://quebecwhitewater.com/en/river-level?task=view&id=43

Plans are to meet at the Tim`s in Hawkesbury at 9:00 am (45.61045,-74.604948) and head to a meeting spot at the intersection of
Chertsey Rd. and Hwy 125 (46.10603,-73.928379)

Given that the weather is messing with water levels, please call to confirm on Friday after 7:00PM at (613) 224-8507

Bill

That sounds like a great plan! Anyone have room for a paddler and a boat?  :)

Here are some more videos!

Highly recommend this run.  Last year I was with Bill/Jim/Louis/Larry/Adrian/Ray when we did this for the first time.  We weren't expecting much and discovered the river to be more challenging/fun/interesting than we expected.  The last drop at the takeout is bordered by a park (which will still be closed and locked up). But easy scouting.  The last drop is the hardest - Class IV+ on river left.  At the time it looked to me like there would be some nice ledge boofs on the river right side as well.  Some ran the drop. Some didn't.  Ran it and would have preferred staying right side up and not tearing my drysuit. Oh well. Great run though! Have fun.

Sweet! What time do you want me to come over? And what do you want from Timmies!?  ;D

Also, anyone has a Pelican waterproof case big enough for a DSLR Camera? I thought I could bring mine and take some shots of the wins and fails on the bigger drops!  ::)

Jacques, myself and possibly Dirk will meet you in Hawkesbury around 9:00!

And yes indeed, lowlife stole my helmet and old patched up gloves from my clothesline... I have a spare, and I will bring your helmet back, J-N. --C.

Well.. There wasnt enough water in the Jean-Venne and there is quite a bit of flat water class 1 till the take out but this trip was 100% worth it.. At least for me it was! This was quite the step-up from last weeks trip on the Achigan and im glad I was on my game today! Once again...This looked 60% smaller in video and Gopro. I was expecting boredom and got more than enough for a guy whos been paddling for less than 2 seasons... Nice Weather, Great Drops, Nice group of paddlers, Decent sized holes and not too much carnage! Just a little! That hole surely got a few of us working hard to get out!  ;) Here are a few freeze frames from my Gopro:

Did anyone run the takeout drop?  Was there enough water for the river left line?

There was water.. just wasnt enough for it to be somwhat clean... And Rebars sticking out the bottom cement blocks... It was doable.. just not as nice as if there were more water!

The last drop after the bridge would have been fine extreme river-right. But as Bastien pointed out, the river-left line ended in a 'highly non-natural' concrete block with big bolts sticking out, and we already knew that one of the group that preceded us that day had a very unpleasant ride down there. That, plus the fact that we had a great day and no one wanted to carry 50 lbs of boat back up the ricketty stairs pretty much sealed the deal: italian restaurant in St-Sauveur it was....
