As discussed, I plan to set up intermediate/advanced playboating
skills clinic(s) with Billy Harris at Pushbutton over the next couple of weeks.
I spoke with Billy last Saturday and he said that his availability was good on weeknights.
He also mentioned that if someone can bring a video camera with a decent sized playback screen that would be very helpful.
Depending on interest level, I propose to do a mid week evening session, which will
hopefully reduce the traffic at Pushbutton (which is already in!)
Cost should be approx $40 for a 3 hour session, minus any club discount and potential
subsidy. (TBD - Christian?)
First proposed date/time is Wed, June 27 at 5PM. Please respond ASAP
with preferred dates/times if interested and we'll get this arranged.
NB. I will be unavailable from June 13 thru 16th, so hopefully other executive
members can step in during that period to monitor this thread.

Yeah Mike, I'm interested. It's simply a matter of sorting rides for me. My wife may not have to teach that afternoon, if that's the case, I have the car. Otherwise, I would have to get a ride with someone.
-
Luc - no problemo - you could carpool with me.
Anyone else? Or would a weekend session work better?
Let me know!
\MR
-
I'd be in for this session Mike. Weekdays good!
-
Well I'm in if I have a ride. I may get the car.. but won't know until then. Tanks for the offer Mike.
-
I am totally in, Billy is the best, but the thing is I dont have a ride. Anyone want to carpool.
-
hi
A weekend session might have to occur in the PM. Carly works the gatehouse at River Run which means that Billy is on baby duty in the morning.
Larry
Or would a weekend session work better?
Let me know!

-
The 27th works for me and I have a car so I could bring a couple of people. However I haven't been paddling that long so I am not sure if this is too advanced for me?
-
Marc -
I would venture that if you have ever played at Pushbutton or S-bend (lunchspot on the Middle) that you would be fine for some Billy time.
\MR
-
OK - I'm going to book this with Billy for the 27th at 5PM.
So far:
Kurt R.
Luc L.
Marc G. (plz confirm)
Martin K.
Mike R.
Think I'll cap this at 6 or 7 participants since time will be limited. I'll book another session if there
is a lot of interest; let me know what dates are preferred.
Does anyone have a video camera?
Bill & Christian - since the club provided a subsidy for the Palmer's clinic, would you like to offer
us a discount for this clinic? Thanks.
Currently, Billy offers a 15% discount for clubs, so our initial cost should be around $34.
\MR
-
Ah, this one would work for me. I'm in.
Cindy
-
I'm in !!
-
I have either my helmet cam (1080P) or a point and shoot (also 1080P)... either of which I can then plug the SD or microSD card into something. But I don't have the something of course.
-
Mart, Luc, we can use my car. I have a ?new? patented roof rack. :o
-
Thanks Cindy.. but I have no way to get anywhere. I'll be relying on Mike since he lives two streets over from me in Barrhaven. I suspect that it would be quite the drive for you to come all the way out here :) But thanks anyways.
-
Cindy,
That works for me just let me know when and where.
Marc
-
I'd also be happy to drive anyone that needs a lift.
-
OK - 6 confirmed:
Cindy D.
Kurt R.
Luc L.
Marc G.
Martin K.
Mike R.
Luc - plz email me your coordinates: rabe123@rogers.com
If we want to take just 2 cars I could squeeze in one more... let me know...
\MR
-
Hey Cindy I am carpooling with Kurt.
-
Ok then, can I carpool with you Mike? I am in Hull, could meet at Bates Island or any other valid location.
-
Not a problem - but what about Marc G. then? Kurt has a pretty small car...
So far:
Kurt driving with Martin
Mike driving with Luc
Another alternative is that we all meet at Eagleson OC Transpo around 3PM and figure it out from there... but given that its mid week it will be quite full at that time...
BTW - the club has generously donated $10 per person for this clinic - Thanks Bill and Christian!
Please bring cash to the event. I have an outstanding query to Billy about the final $ amount.
I'm hoping it will be $34 pp but he was asking for $50... His site says $40 with a 15% club discount... TBD.
\MR
-
OK - heard back from Billy - $34 it is. I don't know if that is before or after tax, so please bring the appropriate funds. We might want to tip him also...
Cindy, Marc, Kurt - what should we do about carpooling?
Luc is with me and Martin is with Kurt.
Might be most comfortable if Cindy and Marc could carpool.
On the other hand if we want to be environmentally aware maybe we could get out
there with only 2 cars... Suggestions?
\MR
-
Should we all meet at a certain time maybe a bit earlier to play at baby face etc.
-
I think Luc is only available at 3 so that's when we are planning to leave Ottawa.
If Garb is in I might grab a few surfs after the clinic if I have the energy...
Maybe talk to your chauffeur about a potential earlier departure... ;-)
\MR
-
Lol, yes I will ask him because I will be done school!
-
I'd like to join Kurt and Mart for the Early start if it works. We can use my big Murano, it fits 4 easily. I suggest we meet at the Tims Hortons in Aylmer near le boulevard des Allumeti?re.

-
I can start early also. As for the carpooling I have no problem meeting in Aylmer
-
I just want to get to the river early as there will not be that many people on the river because its a wednesday and babyface will be mine. ;D
-
Mart, I plan to take the whole of next week off so keep in touch.
-
Yep!!!
-
dumb question maybe - but was it the early-birders' intention to run the whole Main then? I had in mind that we were doing park-n-play ... where would put-in / take-out be?
-
Hey Kurt not sure how early you want to go but I would like to be at the put in for around 2 maybe 3 as I can play at babyface forever and not get bored, and if you cant make that time maybe I can get a ride with Cindy (if she does not mind) or someone else.
-
Hi all - just got back from the Kipawa today...
Martin - please bear in mind that us older folks don't have the boundless energy that you do... so take it easy on us! ;-)
I suggest that everybody show up at *Pushbutton* with plenty of energy in the tank for a 3+ hour session with Billy. As it currently stands Luc and I will be leaving around 3 as planned; reporting straight to *Pushbutton* by 5PM. I'm hoping that Cindy and Kurt can manage the rest of the carpool organizing - please post your plans so that we know that everyone is accounted for. Parking at the Lorne will be available to us - if anyone asks say we are doing a clinic with Billy Harris. Let me know if any drivers need to know how to get there.
And I don't think I need to mention that if anyone is not fully comfortable with running the Main Channel to get to *Pushbutton*, then just do the park and play clinic!
\MR
-
The KId is an energy bombasss
-
;D I understand but I just wanted to have 1 hour at babyface!!!!
-
I will talk to Kurt and Cindy tomorrow.
-
Mike,
Is the training given At baby face or push button? And just to make sure the starting time is 4:00 pm?
Marc
-
Its at 5 at push button.
-
I have decided to do just the park & play so I will take my truck and see you guys there. I will be leaving from Hull at around 2:30 - 3:00
-
Oops! I meant Pushbutton! Please be there at 5PM sharp.
-
Hey guys,
It's looking like park 'n play for me as well.
Given previous posts, may I suggest for carpooling:
Cindy with Martin for early start on Babyface;
Kurt with Marc, for park and play at Pushbutton at 5.
Marc, if ok with you, perhaps you could swing by my place on the way (it's right off the Queensway on the way for you). Please call me 729-3812 to confirm.
-
ok, I'll go with the yound blood and try to not get exhausted before the session.
-
Perfect! We're on - see y'all there. -k
-
Oh yeah, Mike ... if you could please post specifics as to how to get to the put-in, that would be great. Tx -k
-
Yeah, I am not so sure either where is the park and play spot. I always run the river when I go there.
-
I now where.
-
The Lorne put in:
Go past River Run and the Wilderness Tour takeouts (McKoys' Rd). Proceed about half the distance to the McKoys's put in (which we use to run the whole river).
After you pass the field on the long straight stretch there is a dirt road on the right side with a sign (I think its yellow sign for OWL rafting) for the Lorne put in. Its easy to miss, so proceed slowly.
Billy has assured us that we are permitted to use the Lorne put in. Just say we are doing a clinic with Billy Harris if anyone asks. (FYI - the Lorne refers to the rapid which comprises Garburator and Waikiki)
Here's a recent note by Billy on the current status of this put-in:

There is no longer a sign on the gate.
It has been open for a while, just be respectful of the river run and wilderness tours lunch spot.
Also a new trail has been made for paddlers to use as a put in to avoid the river run and WT put in, as they are both a little upset about paddlers using the put in.
-
Thanks for the update.

For everyone's information, highway 17 is now closed for most of the day from Chenaud rd to Forester Falls rd due to a fatal accident today. People may want to double check their routes since it may not be possible to go past Chenaud. Storyland which turns to Queens Line may be a good alternative. Be prepared. It's on CBC news Ottawa.
-
Hopefully this won't affect us other than increased traffic - Storyland is the usual route.
Luc - pick you up at 3PM?
-
3pm please :). Thanks.
