Title: Middle, Main or park and play at the Lorne or McCoys
Post by: AdamN on October 17, 2012, 09:32:04 AM
I am planning to do something on the Ottawa this Saturday starting at 11am.  It could be the Middle, Main or park and play depending on people's interest.  Is anyone interested?

As we learned last weekend, you must dress for cold weather and water (dry suits and gloves a good idea).  Swimming is not a good option and could make for a very long day!

Cheers,

Adam

Hey Adam ... I'm curious, what did we learn last weekend, and how?  (I'm considering going this weekend)  The weekend prior I was doing park and play with my fellas, and it was refreshing, but very warm and toasty with wetsuits / drytops ... has the water temp dropped that much?

btw, do you know the level at the moment?

One of our group broke a paddle in Phil's, had a swim and decided that he had had enough for the day.  Other people without gloves were feeling the cold, especially with the wind (trouble holding the paddle).

Apparently the water was quite a bit colder from the week before (I had skipped a couple of weeks, and yeah, it was colder).  I was toasty in my drysuit, gloves and full head gear.  When I took off my head gear at Pushbutton to eat lunch I realized just how cold it was.

I'm just saying, if you want to be comfortable when paddling (and maybe swimming) at this time of the year, especially if you are running the full river, dress for it!

Cheers,

Adam

Decent chance that I'm in as well.  It looks like there are enough of us that if we were parking and playing, it would be fairly easy to set shuttle and run as well.

I could bring a stove, and we could do a hot lunch at the Lorne before continuing down the remainder of the main.

This sounds good, but Sonya and I also have pool sessions that night so we might just play eat lunch then go home (depending on how long we play) or run the river. I would appreciate if we could do a earlier maybe around 10:30?

I just got back from the Lorne.

Wow!  Garb is almost completely gone.  Pushbutton is gone and no Buseater yet (just a little foam).  I met some WT people, they said that Babyface was gone but that Corner wave was OK.  They mentioned that they saw people working at the dam in Quebec.  I don't know if they had any impact but the level is definitely up from last Saturday.

I'm guessing the best thing to do is run the river either Middle or Main

(No, I don't know what the level was.  Perhaps between 0 and 2)

It would have to have been MUCH higher than 2 for all those features to disapear.

Sounds more like 3+

I vote for 11 am at WT take out, but is it even open? Then I think we should look at the gauge before we decide what we are doing...no?

WT take out should be open as far as I know.
11:00 sounds good.  It will be NO problem to be back in town by 6:00.
Observations made at McCoy's will tell us all we need in order to decide which route to run.
I agree, that the level is probably in the 3 range.  At this time of year gates get opened, and it's anybody's guess as to what will happen.  Kind of rooting for 6, 8, or 14.

The most funny thing about that is that I am sure I know you, but not your last name so really I'd be bailing on somone that I 'unofficially' don't know;)

I am open to either.  I think we should decide when we get on the water dependant on the level!

The level was 4.25 on Saturday.

Waikiki was huge and helped answer a question, is Sandra a screamer?  Answer, Yes!! (well at least when she is surfing Waikiki) ;)

(great surf Sandra - I heard you from Pushbutton)
