Title: Spring Paddling: Upper Black Saturday April 6
Post by: Bill Schlarb on April 04, 2013, 09:51:38 PM
Hi folks,

This Saturday, several of us are planning to run the Upper Black in Central Ontario.
It's a class III river with two class IV drops that can be carried around.
The usual caveats about cold water paddling apply...

Plans are to meet at the Eagleson Park and Ride Lot at 7:45 AM and leave from there at 8:00 AM
GPS co-ordinates: 45.319504,-75.884128

Bring some cash with you since the locals sell hamburgs, hot dogs and home-baked pies
at the takeout (Queensborough, ON) to raise money for equipment for their community park/playground.

If you have any questions, give me a call at (613) 224-8507 after 6:00 PM Friday

Bill

Thanks for the great company.
It was the perfect way to start the season.
It doesn't get much better with burgers, yummy soup and homemade pies waiting for you at the takeout.

Great first run, with just the right amount of difficulty. And the weather was cooperating! Water was lower than in 2011. Jon entertained us at the Mill drop--it was rather tricky this year, so little water. I misjudged a small drop, Otter Slide, and demonstrated how to launch a 92.5 gallon creek boat into low Earth orbit.

Particle Accelerator apparently only claimed one canoe, and one face: an unlucky CUKC paddler who turned sideways above the rapid and proceeded to tumble down the shallow slide... We hope she won't have permanent scars!

After running all those rapids, there was a good amount of a suspicious yellow liquid in my boat... But I don't remember being scared enough to lose control of bodily functions... Well, let's say that the new Gatorade bottles ain't what they used to be... This will be my excuse next time I swim with that boat: I wanted to rinse off the sticky sugary stuff...

I hope Luc will post the video soon. Such a great day even if my neck and shoulders feel like pretzels today.

Great day on the river.

Thanks to bill for leading us all down we had an awesome mostly carnage free day.

Apparently the river claim 4 or 5 canoes, 2 faces, 2 duo's and at least 3 or 4 paddles that day, none of them in our group!

Pretty cool,
Only problem is that now my Sweety and daughter know I am crazy!
Oh well, I still enjoyed a great day on the river.
Thanks for putting it together.

Awesome videos Luc! Thanks for posting, they were worth the wait! Saddly, as I look up at what I wrote a few days ago, little did I know that this may be the first and last river I paddle this year.....The physio should help me better understand my options tomorrow...

J'aime pagayer, calice!

Take care and listen to the docs. Rivers will be there in years to come. Hope you can get out, on them,  to enjoy them again.
