Title: Spring Paddling: St. Regis Saturday April 13
Post by: Bill Schlarb on April 11, 2013, 10:23:39 PM
Hi folks,

This Saturday, several of us are planning to run the St. Regis, Middle Branch, New York, US.
It's a continuous class III river with almost no flatwater.
For details check out http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/1431/
The usual caveats about spring paddling and cold water gear apply...

Plans are to meet at the Ultramar gas station on Prince of Wales Dr. at 8:15 AM and leave from there at 8:30 AM
GPS co-ordinates: 45.240603,-75.712265

Please feel free to use this thread to arrange rides etc.

If you have any questions, give me a call at (613) 224-8507 after 6:00 PM Friday

Bill

I'M IN!!!!

Sorry Sewer Wave Showdown, but the St-Regis beats the showdown any day.

I didn't realize it was so close to home. I need to be back home by 5PM, since it's about a 2h drive I don't think this will be a problem. I just have dinner plans with friends, nothing super important but I'd like to make those plans.

Hey Luc!

If I am not mistaken, Bill and so as I also have to be back by 5PM. So you should be fine to make it back in time.

See you tomorrow!

Annie

OK, so Steve Taylor (newest CdB member) as well as Martin Savard want to come along. They will meet me at my place (82 Chesapeake Crescent) since we will be carpooling together in my car. Bill, I'll call you tomorrow morning to confirm your departure time.

Marty is not. That's why I said "Steve Taylor (newest CdB member) as well as Martin Savard"

But I'm trying to persuade him.

Everyone realizes that just b/c we are going south doesn't mean will have balmy weather, right?

Sandra,

Don't forget the sunscreen and sunglassses and while you're there, if you see a palm tree, can you bring me back some fresh coconut?

Paul  ;D

For those interested, I broke my paddle ont he St-Regis yesterday. I was informed that I went under a strainer (had no idea!) and broke it somewhere in there.

I decided to post a quick blog post on this experience and it includes the video! Hopefully everyone learns something, strainers can be really hard to spot! http://onlineluc.com/blog/2013/4/14/a-close-call-on-the-st-regis-river-a-broken-paddle-ny-video

Saw the strainer in question today, near boulders just above Nicholville bridge. I almost went near it but Marc Laberge pointed it out to me. It was extremely hard to see, as it was black and just below the surface. Marc rode over it as he was hitting it straight up, but if you were hitting sideways, you could be pulled under. Thankfully there was only material damage yesterday!
