CdB's Newcomers' Day
When: June 15 th
Where: Ottawa 's beginner friendly Middle Channel. Many safe lines or alternate lines and of course, all rapids can be scouted and walked!
Why: To meet your new paddling buddies and do what we love best.... PADDLING!!!!
How: More experienced CdB Paddlers will paddle along with you and be available with helpfull hints and advice about the river.
Meet at 10:00 AM at River Run! And apr?s-paddle festivities: BBQ at Larry Wong's place around 6:00 PM. Please bring something to BBQ and something to share like desert or salad. If you leave food in the car for the day then pack it in a a cooler filled with ice....:)
NOTE: We request all participants to bring at least
--A boat in good condition WITH FLOATATION BAGS. Specialised floatation systems for open boats, two floatation bags in the stern for playboats, and for larger boats: in addition to stern bags, some floatation in the bow in front of the bulkhead.
--A throw bag, with at least 50' (15 m) of floating rope, at least 1/4" (6.4 mm) thick (so-called 'regulation' throw bag--longer and thicker lines are preferable). Paddlers should be proficient at accurately throwing and quickly reloading their bag, and when they get out of their boats near whitewater, they are to TAKE THEIR THROWBAG WITH THEM: a throwbag left in a boat is useless.
--A Personnal Floatation Device with at least 15 lbs of buoyancy, with a pea-less whistle (a river knife with blunt end is recommended as well). A multi-impact helmet, well-fitting. Clothing appropriate to the air and water temperature, river booties or other kind of shoes.
--Drinking water for the day and a snack.

I may be able to attend after all. I won't be able to confirm until next week... but it's looking promising. I'm on call at work which means I can't go cottaging... but Newcomer's Day may be doable since I come back home allowing me to do the work required. I'll let you all know.
-
I'll be there for sure and hopefully with a buddy who is interested in the sport. The tricky part may be piecing together a couple pieces of gear for him. I believe he's set for a boat with flotation bags and a paddle. I would expect he's got or is aquiring a PFD and helmet. The tricky issue may be a skirt, not sure the extra I have at home will fit the boat he'll be in that day. Is there anyone from the club who has a skirt that they might be willing to lend for the day? I can check the specifics on size if that helps.
-
Skirt: no problem. What kind of boat?
-
Thanks Christian, Dagger RX 6.9
-
Ok, I have a couple skirts that will fit that boat--I know that for sure, as I have paddled that same boat before.
-
Chances are I will be there in a duo with a newb! :P
-
I may join you guys, I'll know more later on.
Q.: Is the middle channel safely doable in a playboat at the levels it is at?
Cheers,
Caro
-
The Middle Channel is always a playboat run, at all levels. It does not get harder as the level rises, in fact it may feel easier at really high levels. Next weekend, level should be around 16 on the gauge, meaning that in McKoys, one does not have to worry about the Horseshoe yet.

Level is 18 1/4 yesterday! Turns out ill be rafting with HX. I need to dust off, its been two seasons since I last guided and I need some practice runs! :P
-
Hi
By tradition, New Members day is run down the Middle Channel.
Each year brings on different levels, ranging from 0 or as high as 18 on the gauge.
At levels higher than 13, different channels open up, which still allow novices to join in for the day without being scared to sh!t ...
Magical Mystery tour II-III (at most) bypasses Little Trickle and Iron Ring. Then the group can meet up at Angels Kiss or Butterfly.
Voyageur bypasses Upper No-name ....
At 15 and higher McCoys is washed out ... Phil's hole actually becomes surfable if you can catch it on the fly.
Here's a map to the river ... with rapid names and other important things. Switch to satellite mode
https://maps.google.ca/maps/ms?msid=205353621598577759867.00044d9c08124f718929b&msa=0&ll=45.739795,-76.743279&spn=0.017821,0.045447 (https://maps.google.ca/maps/ms?msid=205353621598577759867.00044d9c08124f718929b&msa=0&ll=45.739795,-76.743279&spn=0.017821,0.045447)
Will the water drop drastically from the 18 at present over the next few days? Doubtful since the reservoirs upstream are at 99% full.
Bring the play boat.
Weather forecast looks good for the day ... yay
Larry

Just throwing the idea around... Since weather is going to be nice Friday and Saturday, is anybody interested in camping at River Run Friday evening, maybe playing on the river a bit, to be right there Saturday morning? I missed the Palmer weekend...

I'll know by Thursday evening if I'll go camping at River Run Friday evening but it looks good.
Paul:)

I will most likely be camping at rr, but on Saturday.
-
Christian & Paul (whoever else), it now looks like I will be attending without any issues and I'd be up to go Friday night, play and camp.
Anyone know if Rogers has decent coverage in that area of River Run? The Rogers map says "4G HSPA+" but let's just say I don't trust it. Not that I want to be on the phone, but if I have confirmed access, it would allow me to track work stuff and not have to worry about any potential "data emergencies".
-
I get hit or miss coverage at RR campground with my Rogers BlackBerry. Better up by the road as opposed to down by the river. I would comfortably say your signal may come and go but I'd expect that it'll "come" enough that you'll find out if you need to get to work.
-
Thanks. As long as an email came come in, I'm good. Like I said, I don't expect any work until Saturday night/Sunday but being able to receive emails would allow me to be at ease.
-
So I will be camping at rr until Monday with Laine, Vero and ariane are also camping but until Sunday.
-
Hey, I will also be attending and looking to camp... I'm planing on arriving tonight but I have never camped at river run and not sure what I'm looking for when I arrive is it a camp ground? and on the map there are two roads going into RR. Witch one do I turn down the one just south of McCoy rd or the rd just about parallel to McCoy rd?
Derek.
-
When you arrive at River Run, which is indicated by the big sign at the gate house, you will have to pay money to camp. Normally the gate house is not staffed in the evening and guests are directed to go to the main office which is located close by.
River Run staff will happily take your money and answer any questions you might have. Ask to camp in what they call Paddler's Meadow or Pet haven if you bring your dog.

Awesome Day! Thank you from Rainen and me to all our "safety" boaters - Larry, Jim, Bill. Rainen had a wonderful first paddle down the Middle in the dynamic duo. It was the perfect day surrounded by supportive club members having a great time, to introduce my son to the beauty of the Ottawa River. This morning he says, "You know Dad, I think I can paddle that on my own next time." He also told me that next time he thinks we should run McCoys instead of the zoom flume. I wanted to build his confidence - I guess it worked! :)
From the back of the duo I couldn't see the smile on his face until Luc sent me the video today. Thanks Luc!
-
That was a great day! Thanks Bill, Christian and Larry. Paul, you were missed.

I had a great first paddle on the river amongst many friends and had the pleasure of meeting members I didn't know.
Most of all, I would like to thank you Kelly, Christian, Jeremy, Daniel, Don, Richard, Bill and all of you who have helped me after the paddle as my car was stranded at the put in.
I am happy to say that things got sorted all and that my car is safely sitting at work in the parking lot!
Thank you very much, once more! I do not wish any troubles to any of you, but want to let you now that I hope I can return the favor one day!
Cheers,
Caroline

For those interested, I've posted on my blog about that day and it includes a video. Enjoy!

It's all good as long as you didn't have to buy a new paddle!
