Title: Ottawa River Weekend July 12-14!
Post by: Paul Potvin on July 02, 2013, 02:54:46 PM
Our club's Ottawa River Weekend is happening on Friday July 12 to Sunday the 14!

This is a camping/paddling weekend on the Ottawa river. Some people arrive Friday evening and make it a three-day event. Camping is at 'Paddler's Meadow' at River Run Rafting. This club camping weekend does not involve a 'Feast' (that one takes place August 9-11), so bring your own food to cook at your camp site, or eat at River Run's outdoor restaurant--you can get a weekend meal plan or go a la carte. Saturday evening is when we have our bbq/cookout/bonfire (if permitted).

Groups can go down the Middle Channel, the Main Channel, park and play, level dependent of course, or spend the weekend practicing rolling and other techniques. Rinse and repeat the next day!

The Paddlers's Meadow at River Run is a quiet group camping section and is dog friendly. At the main camp there are also change rooms, hot showers, an outdoor covered restaurant great for breakfast, lunch or dinner, a small store, a bar with a pool table, entertainment at night with big group bonfire going on (or make a fire at your camp site)... Please RSVP so that we can reserve a Coureurs de Bois Only Camp Site.

Here is a link for directions to River Run: http://www.riverrunrafting.com/resources/directions/  and the link to the RR's Homepage with a description of amenities and prices: http://www.riverrunrafting.com/

When you arrive at River Run, just say that you are with the CdB. We will be calling them around July 6 and letting them know approximately how many CdB'ers will attend.

This is a relaxed, come and go as you like, event. Come and stay for as much of the weekend as you want. You can fit it in your plans any way you like, knowing that you have a CdB ?Camp de Base? at River Run with familiar and welcoming CdB faces to greet you, paddle the river with you and share stories with you around the camp fire in the evening. All weekend!

We hope you can all attend. Cheers!

Where do we RSVP? If it's here, I'm definitely in for Saturday night camping and paddling Sunday.

You've just responded Stefan! Can't you also come for the Saturday paddle too? It's nice to do the river twice, in case mishaps in the first run need to be corrected...

I will be retunrning home from my hometown and will try my best to show up Friday night, BTW.

I will bring a telescope too. Fireworks? Interesting idea. Let's look at the budget, and at River Run policies...

I would love to, Christian, but I can't: I've already committed to Hope Volleyball on Saturday. Too bad I didn't know about this a week ago!

Sorry to be a buzz-killer, but before this goes any further, I'm going to have to bow out. That weekend's just unrealistic what with Hope Volleyball and several things that need my attention here in town. I'll have to wait until the next event :/

Hope you guys have a blast!

I'm in from early Saturday morning till ETD Sunday arvy. I'll "camp" in my Forester SUV again, blow-up mattress in the back & large scenic sunroof if it rains & thunderstorms like at Beast Feast last August. Not being a camper, I'll buy a la carte meals and bring my own fancy beers   :D

BTW, my Turbo XT tuned by Chris of Tonik Motors, won the "Sleeper" cup at the Subaru Show & Shine at Trackwerks today. The "Sleeper" is not because of my occasional comfy camping mattress, but because my SUV looks innocuous yet measured a high 300 pounds-feet of torque on a Subaru Club dyno-test of 13 WRXes, STis & Legacy XT Turbos.

I'm in for the weekend too, and looking for a ride if anyone has room for me.

I'd be very happy to go up on Friday afternoon or evening (in time to do some park and play?), but Saturday morning would be fine too.

And I'll be camping, and paddling Saturday and Sunday, as my ride might allow.

Thanks,
Peter

Whoever gets there first, please reserve our spot, as in put up your tent in the Campers Meadow, which is the quiet yet close by place to camp and near showers too (see map). Only way to reserve that spot.

Prices are:

Camping and takeout: $16.50 per overnight/day
Meals: All at the Pavilion (see map)
Breakfast: $12 booked when arriving for overnight camping
Lunch: $15
Supper: $22 (vegetarian option if booked ahead of time)

You can still bring and make your own meals at the campgrounds if you don't want to eat at the pavilion.

Firewood will be provided by the club:)

Fireworks are not permitted:(

Shuttle is $10 per person, if you want to leave your car at the campground.

I may only make it for Saturday morning and stay overnight (I have to make arrangements for pet sitting for the weekend:)...

There will be some safety games, drills organized by Larry and prizes donated by Trailhead Paddle Shack!

Should be a great weekend! I might even be able to paddle by then!

Denzil: it seems to me that sunset is close to 9:00 these days, so could give some time for Park and Play on Friday evening, depending on when one arrives.

This assumes that somewhere like Push Button or Baby Face are good for playing at current levels... anyone know?

And also assumes there are more advanced paddlers with whom to paddle at that time?  (I'm nowhere near experienced enough to 'lead'.)

Anyone else up for some Park and Play on Friday night?

Headsup! From previous trips, by this Friday 12th July do you expect more than 5 to plan for River Runner this weekend? I may not go if so few.  OK, so now you'll all rush BECAUSE I may not go, thanks eh?

Denzil,

On this thread alone are 9 people attending, not counting the others on Larry's thread and not to mention the Dej clan and others who don't use the forum, so I think your minimum of 5 will be well covered and exceeded!

See you Saturday!

What difference does it make how many people will be there ...

There were 20 or so at Palmers Weekend - where were you?
There were about 38 on the river for New Members Day --- where were you?
The following weekend - there were about 12 ... where were you?
This past weekend another 10 or so on the Middle channel. Where were you?

80 % of the people don't say they are coming to these campout events but just show up to paddle the river , drink beer and have some good laughs around the camp fire. We don't take attendance or keep track of numbers at these campouts because I don't have enough fingers and toes to count that many.

so far I all know there will be folks to paddle the river at 11 on Satarday.

Whether you actually make an appearence or not, doesn't factor in my decison to go.

As many know, I'm not (yet) a good steerer, nor even a good roller, so I don't want to sit out the weekend on the river banks because I need rescuing too often! From the same few, if only a  few, who'd get tired of me. I'd certainly NOT want to restrict their or your fun on the rapids.

For the outings I missed, driving 3 or 5 hours return could be better spent practising here at Bate or Westboro or Mooney's. Hopefully I'll be more confident & capable after my appearance this whole weekend & will get my paddling into gear like I envy & admire so many of you guys & gals.

Thanks muchly, Dani, I may need my gills during T-rescues just for rolling practice.

Larry, I have done the Champlain middle a few times over the years, but I just don't feel confident at present. If I get it, you'll see me out even for an hour at lunchtimes, like when I first came to Ottawa 6+ years ago. Frozen-shoulder pains & physiotherapy put my paddling on hold for a few of the middle years.

Hi Denzil. River Run is in a bay on the Ottawa with a beach etc. Also, where Pushbutton is, you have a large flatwater area, you can even swim to the surf wave. So there will be plenty of stuff to do for you during the weekend. I will be there Friday after dinner some time. Cheers!

Denzil does not like to swim. He either dives or surfs holes. And yes, sometimes you will even see him upright if somebody rolls him back up into that position. At least those are his habits on the Gatineau.

Hi everyone,

I'm still looking for a ride for this weekend, if anyone has a spot available? :)

I can leave as early as late afternoon on Friday, but would be just as happy going on Saturday morning to catch the 11:00 paddling group.

And I'd be happy to share in gas money and/or driving duties!

Thanks,

Hi Peter, just saw your post as I was about to offer space, the clever program warned me in pink to read first. So we could repeat our experience of last August at Beast Feast, leaving about 7am or maybe 8am. IF you so wish, RU still somewhere on Gladstone? Back late-ish on Sunday afternoon.

This is for Peter L. as I have to leave soon for a meeting to which I shall bike 10km away on Hunt Club & Prince of Whales Drive: OK for taking you & boat down Quebec side and/or leaving it with Cindy after. I'll aim to be at your home on Gladstone at 7am tomorrow Sat. Thanks for making it clear that you'd share gas. My ScanGauge2 Trip Computer will be accurate but I expect a simple $20 will be OK for all, Peter. Happy to help a student!

A bientot,

Great weekend, hot dry weather, spectacular skies at night (we looked at the Moon crescent and the Andromeda galaxy), nice bonfire with the requisite fire roasted bacon... The river was at a nice level, with Babyface at its best, Pushbutton showing signs of life and Garberator still on holidays.

Thanks Larry for the games--the conclusion that we should all take a river rescue course is warranted...

Everybody did well (mostly), keeping a smile. A special congratulation to Tibor, who despite some digestion problems (don't ask) managed his first perfect Main Channel run, i.e. he ran all rapids in the meat from top to bottom--no sneak!--and kept his hair dry, and a smile on his face! He went from 'I did not even swim!' to 'I did not even flip!' The pivo tasted different after the run, more like victory.

Thanks Paul for getting nice prizes from our sponsors. Next year you can paddle too. But still no fireworks unfortunately.

With our 11:00 departure Sunday, we essentially had the river to ourselves.

The club almost acquired a mascot: a young (or very small) striped cat that spent the weekend with us, even ending up negociating a truce with Mia the Schnauser. But in the end he (or she) was left begind at River Run.

All in all a great weekend! Now if I could only find time for a kayak camping trip...

Looking forward to Beast Feast!

hi

Some gaps to fill in ...
Saturday meet time was at 11 am in an effort to test out E.J.'s theory of running a busy river. At the crack of noon we were on the water ... excellent timing since the majority of rafts trips were already downstream. Saturday is normally busier of the 2 days, and McCoys was a typical busy summer day with numerous other boaters. At one time it did appear the our paddling club looked more like a swimming club, but everyone was fine and permitted some to practice their river rescue skills.

The group split into 2 groups, one for Main and the quieter trip down the middle. Maybe we remember that for next years event and to advertise that earlier in the week. Nothing much to report except at one time there were 44 boaters at Push Button.

Saturday evening .... tough crowd, but thanks for everybody who participated in the river rescue games. Next time I might have to incorporate drinking shots of booze, just to make the games even more fun.

Sunday a small group left the campground at 9am to get on the river before the masses. So we had an hour or so before the first set of rafts came down. Adam #1(C1-er paddles with 1 blade hence the #1) decided to join us for his maiden voyage down the Main Channel. The River Gods giveth and taketh away. Running the Lorne what did they take? ... Adam's contact lenses. What did they give?  - his roll, twice and an adrenaline rush. But we had time to relax at Push Button as we met up with Bastien and 15 of his closest friends. Someone should start charging admission to this park and play spot or open a hotdog/chip wagon.

Onward downstream leaving the masses behind ... to Butcher's knife. Most holes have nasty names such as "chopping block", "vampire" or some name to denote something scary. Since this was Adam's first trip down the Main channel we named all the holes "Fluffy Bunny" there after. It must have worked.

There was one very odd out of boat experience, in a place you wouldn't think someone to even flip over ... the dinky waves just upstream of Miami beach. Ah the River Gods taketh away, and maybe Dave will get booty beer at some time in the future.

In the end, a fun and successful weekend. I hope everyone who attended enjoyed the weekend

Larry

Saturday morning I was not sure if I wanted to do the Main or the Middle, but after swimming McCoy's (from above Phil's...) after a missed attempt at threading the needle, I already had my adrenaline rush of the day so I opted for the Middle. We had a wonderful raft free run with Eddy service to the surf wave in Upper No Name.

I did not try to run McCoy on Sunday as I had had my share of fun in Phil the day before. A big thanks to Larry, Dave and Liz for taking the time to scout the biggest rapids with me and tell me where to go and what to avoid. After a few hours seeing half blurry I was happy to take off the single contact lens I had left and put my glasses on. This is the biggest run I have done so far and I am happy that it has allowed me to gain confidence in my abilities - and in my roll too!

A huge thanks to everyone for making this such a fun weekend, organisers of the weekend and river rescue games as well as everyone who attended, it really was a great event!

Thanks muchly to Tibor & family for bringing some overlooked items into town from River Run, e.g. my 2 camp chairs.

Advice from Bill, Larry, Christian, Gwen plus my sore toes & torso, got me looking for a better boat for me than my Big EZ & Fluid Nemesis, latter not yet in water after 1.5. years. MEC might credit or refund. Nemesis was heavily discounted to about $800 INcluding HST so if anyone wants it for $800, offer now!

VERY good weekend, thanks Execs for all arrangements especially Larry's instructive useful games.
