Hi
It's the May 24 weekend that's early this year.
Any interest in doing the Diable on Saturday ... according to the link below it's in the green
River description in the link:
http://www.quebecwhitewater.com/en/river-level/view/33-diable-mont-tremblant (http://www.quebecwhitewater.com/en/river-level/view/33-diable-mont-tremblant)
Might be a bit higher with rain expected in the area on Friday.
Sections A+B are done and there's a River left channel before the X that is runnable ...
Proposing 2 meet places and time
8:45 am: In Ottawa -- Tunney's Pasture --- parking lot at Parkdale and Scott behind the Statscan building
for car pooling purposes ... short drive over the bridge to the Hwy 50 on the Quebec side
11ish am at the Tim Hortons at Montee Ryan and the 117 (which is the usual route to the base of Mont Tremblant)
That should set us up to be on the river by the crack of noon.

I'm in.

I'm interested, but won't know until tomorrow night.
Might be a bit higher with rain expected in the area on Friday.
They are currently calling for 35-45 mm in Mt Tremblant for Friday:

Such rains should take things quite a bit higher I think.

Never done it. What's the skinny on the rapids? I am torn between this and a high water run down the Gat. Can only paddle Sat. As of right now.

Hi,
Jim and myself are coming as well.
BTW, we will drive after the Diable to the Oureau can camp there for two nights. The Oureau has three sections which, we will decide which section to run depending on the water levels.
Anybody interested in joining?

If I can find someone to share the driving then maybe we could meet up on Sunday. I will try to twist Christian's arm.

Hi
Rapids are not skinny, they have flowing water over some rocks.
It's a creek boat run.
I only ran it twice in my history of boating ,,, once in 2009 and the other time in my Dancer (if anybody remembers that era)
In 2009 Bill was there, so tap into his memory bank. Jim was there as well but his memory cells are non-existent.
The trick is to put on River Right below the dam which involves descending down the steep embankment. In 2009 we put in above the dam, but the portage route on River left made you miss most of the canyon because there was no way of getting back to the river.
On river right below the dam, you will have 3 strokes for warm-up before heading into a Class III gravy train. After that it's all a blur in my memory.
The map in the link sort of gives you a rough idea but fails to add the blub from Fortin's guidebook about the left channel... Of course if folks want to take a look at the X we can do that too ...
In 2009 that was before the extension of Hwy 50 and the improvements to Hwy 323 were completed.

thats half the flow

It is a class IV creek section (scouting is required for the bigger drops).
I have non-existent brain cells., so cannot describe the rapids, and they are challenging (but worth the run).
Level is 29.43 (Low is under 16 cms, High is 32 cms), so towards the high side.

Thanks all for the info!!

Well, I'm jumping on the "bail bus".
Apparently I was just hired for the weekend as a photo kayaker for Esprit/Jim. Doing it for the fun of it. So you will have to live on without me. Hopefully you can all come to terms with this.

hi
We descended the river as originally planned.
The 50 mm rainfall provided a spike in the gauge reading. Depending on which gauge you look at 63 cm/s or 128 cm/s (links to Quebec rivers on the club website --- the rivers tab), was the reading.
Nobody else was on the river. Looking at photos, it appeared that everybody was sitting in the eddy at Bates island.
Short day on the river.
At the "X" on the map, there are 3 channels to choose from and we chose the main line down through Toboggan.
Scouting from River left would have been better to pick out a line to run.
Not too many flat water sections with most of it continuous Class III/IV.

Lesson learnt: when attempting to put in on small wet rocks after descending to the bottom of a canyon just a few meters below the giant boil of a big waterfall and above a Class III+ rapid with undercuts etc., don't volunteer to be last.
When nobody is there to hold your boat when strapping in and the boat starts slipping into the water, that's very--let's say--unnerving. The idea of running the rapid with no skirt nor paddle was not attractive. I ended up having to climb back up the canyon and bushwack my way along a rapid that I really wanted to run! Dirk, you owe me one here!
Great river, but at above 50 m^3 / s, it is definitely not like the video that was posted above. Not much 'black' water, mostly white stuff...
