Now that you have read the info thread on the Palmer Rapids weekend ... this thread has been set up for members to ask questions, organize car pooling for the event, organize food, comment on the wonderful time they had afterwards ... etc.
Palmer Rapids weekend usually happens on the last weekend in May. In 2014, the May 24 weekend landed a week earlier, so there won't be a conflict with the Great Glebe garage sale, the Ottawa Race weekend or the Mec paddlefest.

Would anybody be willing to take me, my boat (wavesport EZ) and some gear down for the weekend? I would be willing to chip in for gas and snacks on the drive!

Missing some info
What area of the city do you reside?
Do you have in the city transportation?
Preferred departure day?

Thanks Allan

Thanks for the prompt:
I'm right off main and riverdale, and have my own transportation around town (consisting of a kayak trailer pulled behind my bike, which works well for in-city travel for about a 10-15 kilometer radius). I would be willing to meet you wherever you want to leave from in ottawa. I am also completely flexible for the timing of rides up and rides back, but ideally would like to be there either friday night or early saturday morning. Coming home I'm ok with leaving either saturday night after a day of paddling, or staying till the sunday for a second day of paddling.
Grace and Peace!

Hi
Everybody tends to bring their own food and cookware ... or at least self-organize into small groups. If Tibor arrives expect him to be sharing meat products (bacon or sausage) around the evening group campfire. There is also a Diner in Palmer Rapids if cooking is not your thing. If you forget something there is a general store located in Palmer Rapids.
If you plan on doing the Lower Mad on Sunday, treat it like a day trip by bringing food and water.
Yes. bring your own booze.

Thanks for posting up all the info Larry but theres just one thing you missed; where the campground is. Your instructions: "For those of you who have not been to the campground - once you get there - just go straight" are not much help since, not having been there before, I don't know how to get there. If you could provide some more detail I would appeciate it.
Also, there won't be any issues with be bringing my dog I hope?

The map is provided on our events page for those that need it. http://cdb-ottawa.com/eventsevenements/

Hi
Actually all the info is there ...it's on the map that Whitewater Ontario provides. Jessops campground is marked, you might have to zoom in bit, but when you arrive at the campground there is a dinky handwritten sign that says group camping.
Just like running a river, everybody might take a different line.
Once you pull up the link that is provided on our new and improved website with links to useful information in trip planning, you would have to right click the Jessops tab and fill your own "directions to here" when prompted.
If you have any problems, ask Jessica for assistance.
As for dogs ... pets are allowed, provided they don't terrorize campers.

hi
Well that was an entertaining weekend ...
- sunny and warm
- relatively no bugs
- water levels at optimum
- meeting new members.
and if you weren't present, the tales of a run away boat, paddle, paddling back upstream to fetch the forgotten items or the bonk on the head will circulate.
Hope everybody had fun ...

Ha Ha! Well you had to be there.
My little experiment was to assess the suitability of a 14' sea kayak for Class III whitewater, for self-supported overnighters for instance.
Some concerned white-beard canoe dude with a brand new 1983 Protec helmet took it upon himself to inform me that I had brought the wrong boat for the river.
I was a bit aprehensive about the last rapid (Canoe Opener) because there are sharp manoeuvres to do (a certain canoe even did part of it backward), but I can report that with a little bit of adjustment, a 14' sea kayak does really well on such a river. Especially on the flats...
So I can add the Dagger Alchemy L to the list of boats able to handle Class III at least for self-supported overnighters!
Bonus: without this kayak, Zach wouldn't have retreived his prized shoes from Hass Hole, as we were a few rapids downstream by the time he remembered them... But what is a little upstream racing for an 18 y-o on the canadian team?

Beautiful weekend indeed! The sunshine was brilliant, the bugs reasonable, the zoo keeper in check, and the support out of this world:) I always wanted to do the mad by canoe...sincere thanks to Jim for listening right away, being by my side and getting my boat down stream and to the parking lot, Gwen and Chris t. and whoever else who orchestrated my canoe ride with strangers :) and Chris t. Portaging my boat. The new couple for getting my paddle down stream. Marc and Jen for the ride and Thomas and Tibor for getting me home. Hope I didn't miss anyone.....And all in the name of just one
Hope to see you all soon.
