Title: Newcomers' Day June 14 2014--General Thread
Post by: CdB-Exec on June 04, 2014, 07:52:09 PM
CdB's Newcomers' Day

When: June 14 th
Where: Ottawa River's beginner friendly Middle Channel. Many safe lines or alternate lines and of course, all rapids can be scouted and walked!
Why: To meet your new paddling buddies and do what we love best.... PADDLING!!!!
How: More experienced CdB Paddlers will paddle along and be available with helpful hints and advice about the river.

Meet time: 10:00 AM
Meet place:  River Run - Upper gate house.  There is an access fee ~ $5/person and a waiver for the year that needs to be completed

Rather than provide long winded directions which nobody reads … here's a link to a map
https://maps.google.ca/maps/ms?msid=205353621598577759867.00044d9c08124f718929b&msa=0&ll=45.710974,-76.727486&spn=0.154149,0.363579 (https://maps.google.ca/maps/ms?msid=205353621598577759867.00044d9c08124f718929b&msa=0&ll=45.710974,-76.727486&spn=0.154149,0.363579)

River Run is the take out …. more on that later.

For car-pooling purposes and being creatures of habit, people have the option to meet-up at 8:30 am at the Eagleson Park and Ride which is located at Eagleson Rd. and Hwy 417. http://www.octranspo1.com/routes/park_and_ride (http://www.octranspo1.com/routes/park_and_ride)

Bring drinking water for the day and a snack or lunch, since we usually stop somewhere along the river.

As for safety equipment bring:
-- your boat with flotation, helmet, sprayskirt and paddle
-- lifejacket (PFD), whistle and throwbag
-- clothing appropriate to the air and water temperature, river booties or other kind of shoes.
which is a condensed version paraphrased from the safety thread on the forum.

At River Run a shuttle needs to be set up so all the paddlers, boats and paddling gear gets to the OWL put in (which is also marked on the map). Remaining at the take out are dry clothes and a sufficient number of cars for the drivers at the end of the day to fetch the cars. Usually somebody steps up to be the shuttle nazi.

More information on shuttling can be found here: http://www.guelphkayakclub.com/content/_/required-reading/shuttle-for-dummies-2012-edition-r10 (http://www.guelphkayakclub.com/content/_/required-reading/shuttle-for-dummies-2012-edition-r10)

Usually at this event, we have a large flotilla of boats on the river. Once everybody is geared up and ready to go, we will gather in the bay before heading off down the river. That will provide a chance for introductions and to give some safety guidelines. In the past, the last person was left behind ... don't be that person.

Newcomer's day also coincides with the deadline for renewing your 2014 membership.
There is also a BBQ occurring back in Ottawa in the evening. That information will communicated to you in a separate thread.

The Ottawa Middle and Main channel are run many times during the paddling season. The gauge reading is now being tweeted and updated to http://www.owl-mkc.ca/owl/ (http://www.owl-mkc.ca/owl/).

The CdB executive hopes to see current, past and new members at this event!

Cheers,

The CdB Executive!

I'll be at the Eagleson Park and Ride at 8:30 am with a station wagon and racks. Would love to carpool with up to three other people in my car or join another carpool if possible :)

hmmm Friday night party/camping huh? I'll talk to my newbie buddy Mark and see if he's interested in doing that. If not, we'll probably head straight to River Run for 10AM Saturday.

I'll report back if we are camping.

It's called 'Paddlers Meadow',

45.715159° N
76.729267° W

We as a club always camp there. It's on the left before going down the hill to the main building/beach. If the sky is clear, I will have a telescope set up, even though it'll be full moon...

I can confirm I will not be camping after all. Mark has company over and is grabbing a ride with me. So we're planning on meeting everyone at River Run for 10AM.

(EDIT): Unfortunately, previous paddling commitments have come up, so I won't be able to go this weekend. I voted for meeting at river run 10:00, but won't be there so you can disregard one vote. Sorry! I hope it's a great day for everyone!

I am waiting to see what Sandra's plans are. If she leaves from Ottawa on Saturday, I may drive with her, otherwise I am not sure yet if I'll try to meet with people at Eagleson or just drive from home and meet at River Run. I would assume the second is more likely.

hi

Well that was fun ... the weather forecast and the observed were quite different.
Since half the club was on the river, a short trip report seems pointless.

Thanks to Barbara and Dirk for hosting the BBQ at their house.

See You On The River ... at some time during the paddling season.

Hey that was an impressive number of paddlers on the river. I would like to thank also those paddlers who showed people the way, encouraged, rescued, helped with gear etc. to keep it all fun and safe... like Larry, Jim, Jack T., Christian, Jon, Sean, Luc. I know that personally I owe a few beers. If you are new to the club you have already seen that the $20 annual fee is an unbelievable deal.

Well, I did my best at showing all the lines... but one line (i.e. Lower No Name) may have been missed by one person and that person may or may not have swam the rapid on the RIGHT of the big island that is usually on the right as you go down Lower No Name.

I apparently discovered there is a "line" down this rapid as I tried to chase my buddy. He can probably speak to the rockiness, but from the marks I saw on his body afterwards, I can confidently say that it's pretty rocky :) Thanks to Richard for helping me down this rapid as he was my eyes from the shore since I ran it "blind".
