What are you guys getting soft and avoiding the camping now? Or does the party get that good at the lodge? Or perhaps you are afraid of the roaming moose at night?
Anyhow, I'm hoping to join, but I will likely be camping. If anyone else is so inclined let me know. I don't know my way around down that way yet but camping areas should be easy to find. Some other paddler said this about last year's fest:
"Though most paddlers seem to be staying in Old Forge these days, I still prefer riverside camping – which is plentiful and free at the Moose put-in. Arriving around 9pm, we found a riverside site that was empty, set up our tents to the sounds of the class two warm-up rapid below, and got a nice fire ripping while enjoying the company of friends and the chilly autumn night...."
http://fluidkayaks.com/blog/tag/moose-fest/
The put-in that he was referring to was probably for the Bottom Moose but that is close enough to the Lower. Anyhow those details can be figured out closer to the weekend, and by then perhaps I''ll be interested in the hot-tub and margaritas option myself.
-
Should be in. Might check in at the Forge Motel though. Would paddle both days. Level-dependent, it's Lower, maybe Bottom... Independence/Otter nice too.

I'd like to go but I'm pretty strpped for cash so I'd definitely be camping and I'd need to hitch a ride with someone from Ottawa.
-
(are you guys getting soft and avoiding the camping now?)
yes and its the end of october anyway I hope to paddle with you and will meet all the paddlers at the store
I think the camping spot is at the take out of the lower: 43.6211128, -75.2745972 (Fowlerville Road, it’s the Put in of the Bottom Moose)
-
Can anyone give me a ride?
-
I will likely be going, is anyone planning to run the bottom section?
-
Thanks for posting Daniel. I am considering doing the river/sections you mentioned. If I drove w someone else, would I be able to jump in with you down there for the paddling or would there be no room. Hoping to also get in for the party.
We will see...

Ha ha... Dave, if you are 'hoping' to join, the important thing is to show up there with boat and gear! So this is your first assignment. If you successfully complete this task, the rest is flexible. So... ''hoping' to see you there!

"Mountain Man Outdoor Store and hope to be ready at 10:00 after emptying the store."
We'll make sure that whatever comes out of Mountain Man is well scratched by the time to cross border into Canada, to pretend it was yours all along...
I will tomorrow try to get a room at the Adirondack Lodge, but would prefer one of the motel rooms down by the river.
The Friday evening refreshments in Old Forge can be memorable. I have seen things, during the evening and on the following morning...

level 5.1, rising and currently raining over Upper state NY
Reminder to those that are running the bottom half of the Bottom section, the hydro dam is offline therefore there is no diversion of water from the main flow.

Larry or others...
Do you know what that means for the Lower moose? More water means easier or harder?
I have never been.
Sandra
-
Probably harder.
I for one will not be doing the bottom at these levels.

According to Accuweather, it doesn't look like there will be a water shortage on the Moose watershed this weekend...

With all the awful weather on the way just wondering if many of you will have a change of heart? I just got a message from Daniel wondering if it is still worth going? I would like to get a feel for what everyone else is doing before taking a decision.
If the Moose is flooded maybe we could do the St-Regis as a one day trip on Saturday?

the Fish!
http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/1306/
The Fish is likely to be too low by tomorrow. I was seeing last night that a group from Syracuse was putting on there this morning and was thinking about scrambling down there to join them, but sleep was more important.
The St. Regis level looks like it has now peaked, and it has not hit the minimum runnable level. I highly doubt that this will be a go.
I don't know the Moose runs so I'll probably wait and see if others think that it is time to bail or not. If one does make it to Old Forge there is always the Middle Moose which is closer to town:
http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/3590/#main
and perhaps some more creekish runs nearby.
-
Oh Yah, I'm good to get out and play today if anyone else is so inclined.
-
Luc and I are still going.
We'll be at the forge motel if anyone is interested.
We're gonna run whatever we can.
-
We decided to go and ajust there with the group
leaving around 13:30 and go for a beer at The Backdoor Bar
Daniel
-
I will be there too! I trust Dave H. Bc he has never been proven wrong yet. But he better be right bc I love the st Regis. See you there!!
-
We'll probably be at slickers tonight, its where the party happens!
Will be with a group of GKC and KWP.

Most mortals have a cut off level of 5 for doing the Bottom Moose
At the present level, the Lower Moose is challenging as any other Class IV rapid .... the first part before Mixmaster, the rapids are long rather than the drop/pool stuff of the Bottom.
The independence is honking right now .. continuous until the Big Mother ...
have fun, be safe
Larry or others...
Do you know what that means for the Lower moose? More water means easier or harder?
I have never been.

Everything is way too high, or still too low.
the Black is at 7000
-
Ok, just to let people know, Luc and I have decided to bail on this. Everything is too high to make going down worth it for us, and Luc has some things he needs to deal with this weekend that just came up today.
Sorry everyone.
-
Also, the room at the Forge Motel is now available if someone wants it. It's $110/night for 2 beds. I am planning on cancelling by 5PM today unless someone wants to take it off my hands. If so, give me a shout asap, [REDACTED].
By 5PM, I'll call to cancel the room.

Excellent trip! My first lesson learnt was that the beer can be quite strong in those parts. The Lower Moose was excellent at those levels (~5.8] and something to keep in mind during the Spring. Daniel I missed you guys at whatever restaurant you stopped at on the way back; at least that way you guys never felt like switching languages for my bad ears :)
Next time I like to try Otter creek and Woodhull creek A lot of paddlers went there ... next trip
The Woodhull is fairly close to the Fish:
http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/1306/
and it would be great to do the two on the same weekend if one can time it right.
