Title: Petite Nation at 110+ CMS
Post by: DaveH on May 06, 2018, 09:31:13 AM
It is right around that level and still climbing a bit on the Ripon gauge:

Anyone want to go check out what it is like at these sort of levels? I'm thinking that it would be prudent to put-in below the upper canyon and then portage up if all looks OK. I could likely be game for a mid-afternoon departure (to beat rush hour) any day this week. Or, even later today perhaps......

We ran it at 140+ last year, and I have run it up to 155 ish in past years.

Its huge. the canyon is massive.

be careful at the entrance to the canyon, it gets really tricky and the hole above it gets massive.

I may be up for an after work run, but I want to run the canyon if we go.

Hi Jon,

I think that we are likely using different gauges/flow sources. In the link that I posted it appears that the flow at that gauging station has never reached 155 CMS in 46 years of record keeping; it would of been at least really close to that at a couple points though. Meanwhile the folks here are claiming that the river at Papineauville QWW is currently at 170 CMS:

I'm thinking that you are likely using this or a similar resource for your numbers, but ????

I want to see you run the canyon also  ;D  I could be game on Wed. or Thur., but with the foretasted rains for this weekend there should be plenty of opportunity for high flow runs for a while yet. I spoke with Marcg this evening and he was sounding game for a Wed. evg outing.

Yes I have always used the Quebec whitewater gauge, I didn't know there were other gauges.

we ran it about this time last year, so you can see what the water level according to your other gauge was:

That said, this week as of now is pretty much not gonna be good for me.

Next week I am 100% in for an after work run. and I am off work around 3ish, depending on when I make it in, in the morning.

I believe, but not sure, that the quebecwhitewater flow info is based upon the 'Ripon' gauge. Modeled something like Ripon * 1.5 as the river basin is about that much bigger by the time it gets to the upper canyon.

Yah, next week will still provide plenty of water and also more daylight.

Next week better, as I have 22 high school students to take care of this week...

It is going to be difficult for me to break away early most days next week, and from what I see now Tuesday looks best for me. I'm guesstimating that the levels will be dropping pretty fast by then, but of course still be quite high.

How about 3:20 for anyone that wants to carpool from the Tim Horton's on Montee Paiement, and then 4:00 at the take-out bridge?

This tread has been quiet, just wondering if there is still an interest?

I think that it is time to bail on this; at least for me it is. With only 3 of us it doesn't work so well for doing the upper canyon at high water etc.
