The Beast feast last year was held a Riverrun because of the abnormal high water on the Gatineau.
With the addition of the July event at Riverrun would be good to have .... the July 17/18/19 weekend also coincides with free Fishing in Ontario. The club held a fishing competition courtesy of Late Ray several years ago.
I think the July event should be made a "locked sticky" for now so everybody knows to mark that date on their calendar.
Called it Riverrun Camping Weekend

Great idea!
I'm in!

In keeping with "Beast Feast" I thought that, in honour of Bill's kayaking related injury from last year, we were going to call this weekend, "Sexy Schlarby's Rib Fest?
Slow smoked rack of ribs anyone??
-
I had excellent ribs at the rib fest on Sat evening.
Didn't check if Bill was the provider, although there was a strange looking animal atop the kiosk.
Sexy Schlarby's Rib Fest
Mini Beast
Riverrun Camping Weekend
and there are a few other names that came up too...
Whatever the name is, that weekend is slowly approaching.
So, accumulate brownie points, refill the propane tanks, get the needed liquid food (beeers) and find where all those camping items disappeared to.
Target?
Riverrun campground for base camp.
Ottawa Main or Middle channels and playboating on the menu during the day while we share stories and smoked mosquito ribs on Saturday evening. For those with a bigger appetite, Bill may still have larger ribs to share.
But don't take any chances and BYOB/R/etc. (You can guess what the B and R stand for, right?)

Quick update on that weekend.
Beside cooking ribs or hot dogs by the campfire, I am proposing some high quality paddling clinics.
I've secured the participation from Billy Harris to provide clinics over that weekend, with his wife helping depending on numbers.
Billy does not need introduction, being one of the best and experienced paddler around and one of the best paddling teacher.
http://www.jacksonkayak.com/teamjk/teammember.cfm?member=billyharris (http://www.jacksonkayak.com/teamjk/teammember.cfm?member=billyharris)
Learn how to go dental on the wave! Or how to perform those darn blunts, or just to get in that wave successfully.
Some interesting pictures and quick report on the last Champlain clinic Billy gave.

Cost:
40$ for a surfing clinic and 60$ for a riverrun clinic.
Current plan is:
Saturday
08h00-10h00, surfing/park&play clinic at the appropriate spot
13h00-16h00, river running clinic (Main or Middle according to level)
Sunday
13h00-15h00, surfing/park&play or river running according to numbers
As you can guess there is a limited number of spots available, so let me know asap before the spots are all taken.
(Several already are...)
BTW, if you have a good idea, I'm open to suggestions.
Disclaimer: the clinics are not offered by the club, but by a separate entity - Billy Harris.
Usual disclaimer regarding responsability in fine prints applies fully.

Weekend is over. Time to think about the next weekend.
The surf spots are definitively coming on and I had great surfing on Corner Wave and Left Side Horseshoe during the previous weekend and then on Transformer yesterday (Yeah!!). I am eager to get back on the wave next weekend and learn from Billy Harris.
There is more interest shown for the surfing/play-boating aspect. The 2 surfing clinics have 1 spot left.
If there is more interest on that side (or the other) let me know.
OK, time for bed now.
Hope to see you next weekend.
Planning to get there Friday evening for an early start...
Cheers and SUOTW

How early are you going Louis? Is anyone intrested in Park&Play somewhere on Ottawa on Friday evening? Mostly for fun, but also to justify arriving at RR on Friday. How about leave town at around 3 p.m. be on the water by 5 p.m. and enjoy some 3 hours of fun.
Robert
-
I do not think I will be able to leave before 16h00 on Friday, but hope to sleep there and then maybe surf on Friday evening...that would be great!

``How about leave town at around 3 p.m. be on the water by 5 p.m. and enjoy some 3 hours of fun.''
It's possible--what's the level now? Is Pushbutton in? Waikiki? We could go there and check...
--C.
-
Info: today the Owl gauge level was 3.75. So maybe McCoy's park'n'play then? We can still check the Lorne, as we can drive up to it...
--C.
-
If this is a go, I would like to both miss the rush hour traffic and get enough daylight on the river to justify indignity of sleeping in the tent. Right now the level is all over the place both past few days and today (WildernessTours posted 1 3/4 at 9:10 vs. OWL 3 3/4). As we near Friday we might have better idea where&what and if there is intrest we can even go at different times and meet up.

I could be convinced for park and play on Friday evening...depending on what's available. Also, have a few spare beds at the cottage for those of you who aren't looking to camp. I'd like to also run the river either Sat or Sunday. Is everyone who is going doing the clinics?
-
I would like to arrive Friday evening. Wether I make it on time to Park and Play or not.
I am supposed to do clinics but I will definitely run the river.
-
Yeah... I do Bluesfest beer tent Friday until 8pm; could get to River Run afterwards. I may not feel like doing an 8am clinic, but running the river and playing along sounds good... I'd be happy to be coached by people like Billy and Carly. I need to be back by 3pm on Sunday, for more Bluesfest beer tent...
BTW, Billy was amazing in the new All Star on the Transformer last Sunday, I have some good footage of him. Larry came a close second.

Hey Sandra,
I'm heading up Saturday morning....not doing the clinics, but would be up for a run on the Sunday. I'm bringing a beginner, so Saturday will be park & learn.....Sunday we'll do a run.....
Cheers,
Chris
P.S. Hoping the weather forecast changes again......
-
Is anyone heading up on Sunday Morning to join in with the weekend pack. I can't make it on Saturday but would love to still run the river Sunday. Are folks leaving riverrun at a particular time in the morning that I could meet up with you.

Hi everybody,
I'm planning to go to river Run on Friday so I can set up my tent in the dry.
I never really camped at river run so can somebody clarify some things for me please? I looked at the web site and it seems that breakfast is included with the camping. Is that right? Or can we pay a lower rate and bring our own breakfast? Also, I heard that some people might go out to Annie's place for dinner. Is some people planning to eat at the camp group? If so, can we eat in the covered area if we have our own food? Or do we have to eat in the rain?
Hope to see a lot of people there.
Annie

Updated plan as there is a lot interest in surfing/playboating clinics.
So, this will be more focused on surfing/park&play clinic at the appropriate spot.
But if enough people care for riverrunning with Billy/Carly...
Cost: 40$ for a surfing clinic and 60$ for a riverrun clinic.
Meeting spot is under the covered area, next to the beach volleyball court.
Billy will help with boat ferrying.
Saturday, meet @
08h00 morning clinic meeting time at above designated spot.
13h00 PM clinic starting at meeting spot
Sunday, meet @
08h00 morning clinic meeting time at above designated spot.
13h00 PM clinic starting at meeting spot
So far we have Annie, Louis, Tibor, RobertM, Ian (Sunday only), JacquesT, John Buss and Dominique (not confirmed yet).
In various combinations.
So, if interested, let me know and/or show up the said location and time.
Those who have indicated their interest will have priority for the time slots they choose.

Hi all.
In case the playboating clinics are full, is anyone interested in leisurely running the river on Saturday? I haven't done the Ottawa in a long time. Plans would be to camp Friday night, run the river Saturday, camp (or not) Saturday night. Cheers!

Annie, when I camped there last year the breakfast was an option ($5.00 or so premium).

Hi Sandra
I think that Christian and I would be interested in running the river on Saturday. Are you still in?
Sara
-
Hi All,
Is anyone else interested in just running the river on Saturday? Mr.Wong?? Anyone?? I can be there at anytime, but will need to know asap.
Sandra
-
Sandra, I am paddling on Saturday (and Bill is too as far as I know), maybe both days. I'm flexible on meeting time.
-
Great! I think we need to either go early 9amish or after 11 to try and miss some of the crowds...
-
Hi Sandra, Christian et al you will likely bump into the morning clinic group (that will rise before chickens). I'm in the Sat mornig group, but would like to run the river on Sun if it's a go.

I think I'm going to drive there on Friday night and join the park and play group, camp Friday night, and join the Saturday morning clinic if there is room. I have to go back to the city on Saturday evening though.

hi
So many questions ... so little time. Kinda wonder if this will get lost in this thread.
I am not taking any clinics ... one a year is enough for me.
Saturday run: 11 am meet time at River Run Gate house ... it's forecasted to rain so I prefer to keep my camping gear dry in the car.
As for Sunday meet below in the River Run Campground at 9 am to set up shuttle.
Send me a PM if that sounds good.

Oh wise one. I was waiting for your post:) See you at 11 a.m.
-
I don't know if I was on or not. I remember Louis saying I was on. I can't go this weekend. I've been paddling 3 times this last month and miss being out everyday like last year, but work is keeping me away. If anyone want my spot contact Louis or Billy and tell him you can take mine. Have a great weekend guys and gals.
Paul :)
-
I sent a separate email to those who have indicated interest.
Meet under covered area at 8h00am and 13h00 for the morning and pm clinics.
Sat morning session full.
Spots avail for pm session.
(may have a drop out and then a spot can open, show up if interested to pick up an emptied spot)
Time for bed now.

Hi All,
Is anyone planning on staying at the campground all day (Saturday)? (i.e. a non-paddling family member?)
Narcisa might come up, but she won't be paddling with us, and we were wondering if there was going to be anyone else there.

Change of plans for me.....I'm heading up tonight (Friday) and camping...will be at McCoy's around 6pm......
Wondering where to set up camp....where is everyone camping tonight? the upper section, or the lower section....
-
I'll bring 3 teens, 16 and above.
I'll give them kayak lessons in the PM.
BTW, if any of you have an extra skirt...I'll have 4 kayaks for my little gang in the PM, borrowed some stuff from Paul (thanks!!) and Jacques is brining in an extra paddle but still short a skirt. So, if you think about brining an extra skirt and PFD...much appreciated. :)

I think that Annie, Robert, Christian, Sara, Dominique are all camping Friday evening.
But likely to get there after you, I would guess...
I'll bring a tent and tent trailer for my gang.
Hope to set up in the lower section, but might be restricted by local marshal as to where I set up the tent trailer (which does not need any connection).
I may get there by 21h00.
Inquire about tent trailer hand rolled to the lower section and send me a SMS to 613-299-0997 for your final location.
-
Hi Louis,
I've usually seen the trailers on the upper section - Usually the lower section is filled with "gorbies", but I'm fine anywhere.....more room up top though, so I may venture there. I'll send you a message though once set up....
Cheers,
Chris

Hi
Just a quick note, I won't be camping on Friday night and will be heading up on Saturday for the 11am trip with Christian.
Sara

We should have a CDB flag or something like that for events like this one. I'm also planning to get there tonight probably around 8PM. Like I said before, I only went to River Run for take out and bath room. I'll try to locate you one I get there.

Hi,
I am going tonight, but got hold up at work (potluck). Depending on traffic I expect to be at RR around 6:30 or 7:00. Last year's Beast was held at Paddlers Meadow (13 on the map) and we were camping in the middle of the field to the right of the entrance (as you drive in). I think this is the upper one isn't it? If I am terribly wrong please someone clarify as I don't want to cartwheel my tent in the middle of the nite :)

You are correct in that we camped on Paddlers Meadow for Beast feast ... Actually it is the usual place for boaters to camp since the areas near the pavilion is more of less filled with rowdy rafters
As for a flag/banner for the CdB ... great idea. Anybody know a where to get one made up.

Looks like I may be the first one there (that would be a first.....). I'll set up on the upper section (the paddlers meadow). I'll have a green tent....I'll also have a dining canopy (blue) that you can sit under, with a few chairs......My car will be at the put-in......
See everyone soon....
Cheers,
Chris

Thank you...see you all there!

I feel like I'm coming down with something today so I'll stay home and rest tonight, but may show up tomorrow if I feel better.

Looking to share a ride with anyone planning the same.

I won't be able to go until Sunday (at best) - any thoughts on what time folks are planning on getting on the water Sunday?
Cheers,

Pretty sure I'll be heading up tomorrow AM (Sunday). Have not seen any posted start time

Mike and I are meeting 8.30 at the Eagleson park'n ride, anyone else free to join us of course. Ceilidh? I can take one extra in my car.

Well, I hope every one who participated or paddled had fun.
I had 2 afternoon sessions with my daughter and her boyfriend to introduce them to paddling.
On Sunday afternoon, we touched some current and visited McCoy.
Next class, this weekend in Valleyfield.
Clinics with Billy and Carly went well. We had 2 in the mornings.
I especially enjoyed the Sunday morning one with a LOT of great tips and teaching on the S-Bend wave.
It was also great to see Annie and Tibor making such progress on the wave.
We had a good group of paddlers around the fire on Saturday evening and overall the weather was cooperating sufficiently...
I think Annie was the only one bringing in ribs to honor Bill's memory of a rougher winter...
Moving on... ;)
