Beast Feast in August will be at the Bonnet Rouge Camping Site in Maniwaki this year.
DO NOT MISS IT!!! IT IS THE PREMIER EVENT OF THE CDB CLUB! MANY PADDLERS THAT YOU SELDOM SEE AND OF COURSE ALL THE REGULARS WILL BE THERE!
It will be a weekend of camping and running the Gatineau River which is running at lower levels this year and thus will be easier to paddle, even for the newest paddlers.
The date is the weekend of the 6-7 and 8 of August!
Corn Roast and most likely a Pot Luck on Saturday evening!
Breakfast can be bought on site and is very good!
Fantastic beach for sun bathing, swimming and playing (volleyball, etc..) and great surfing right at the camping site!
Bring your significant others, rafting escort-trip can be arranged for the non paddlers!
Stay tuned for more details and reserve that weekend on your schedule!!!
THE GATINEAU IS A GREAT RIVER TO PADDLE, UNFORGETABLE!
Prizes from Paddle Shack, Level Six and an Auction for fantastic Paddling Gear.
Check out the Bonnet Rouge website, it's great!

The CdB holds this event each summer ... corn, potatoes, spit roasted beef. This year the event bounced back and forth and was almost canceled or changed into something else. I really couldn't post an update until all the ducks were in order. Darryll is more busy now in his retirement has lent us his spit contraption this year.
Tasks have been divided up into those three food categories. Paul is in charge of the potatoes, Annie and Sara taking care of the corn, and I will tending to the 25 lb roast beef this year. So for the Saturday dinner, the pot luck contribution could be any of the following: appetizers, salads, munchies, desserts ... booze wine, beer, shots if you so desire.
Prior to the downriver portion of the day, some kitchen prep has be done with some helping hands, and a corn husking circle created after the day on the river.
You will need to bring your own plate and cutlery
Some people head up Friday nite to camp rather than rushing around Saturday morning. The Perseid meteor shower sort of starts that weekend ...

Hi all.
To help those poor souls who will have to purchase the food, it would be nice to know approximately how many members are planning to join us this weekend. Could it be possible to indicate it here?
To start, Sara and I will be there...

We need a volunteer (s) to buy prizes for unusual feats on the river, past feats, and thank you gifts for members who are contributing a lot this year. You will be reimbursed by the club (kep the receipts) . We are talking about a few bottle of wine plus some inexpensive gifts (i.e. dollars store or the cheap bin at Paddle Shack, MEC, Trailhead, etc).
Could someone please volunteer,
PM me and I will give you more details,

Hi everyone
The only time I've been to Bonnet Rouge we missed the turn off sign. Anyone know how far from the stop sign at the turn on to Ch. Riviere Gat to the Bonnet Rouge sign?
Kelly
-
I will be there for paddling and beast.
-
Colin and I will be there as well on Sat...
looking forward to it!

From the Bridge in Bouchette to the sign in Bonnet Rouge, there are 12.5 km (7.8 miles). It takes about 11 minutes.
The main thing is: you have to keep left and the sign is on your left.
(I did mapquest.com from the bridge in Bouchette to the address of Bonnet Rouge which is 215 Chemin Riviere Gatineau (as per their website) and this is the result I got.)

At what time will people leave Bonnet Rouge on Saturday to go to the put-in?
I am trying to decide if I have to camp on Friday or if I can simply join the group on Saturday morning.

Last year my sister-in-law collected a battered, bruised and exhausted brother-in-law after the Saturday Beast Feast run.
Since then, his body may have recovered, but not his pride, I think.
And also since then, he went through a winter in-pool course, got a 2010 Fun to replace his _R5_ along with an H2O bent shaft, L6 dry top and the works - from a Montreal fellow dropping off the sport. He also worked on his roll.
Last Sunday, after hosting his older daughter wedding - lake house close to Grand Remous/Maniwaki - I got to witness his excellent progress and determination. He has enlisted his best friend in his efforts and will be joining us in another iteration down the Gatineau.
Looks like Elise should be joining us as well.
My plan is to get them to play at Bonnet Rouge on Saturday afternoon and then go down the river with the group on Sunday.
That should give me the chance to expose them to rapid negotiations now that these 2 guys have a pretty regular roll.
Elise and I should stick around for Saturday's communal dinner, but I hope salmon will be offered again as we are both not too strong on meat.
Anyway, I am glad to see the list of participants stretching and eager to see many of the usual suspects.
OK, maybe except for Paul.
BTW, I think there has been a few changes regarding the put-in/take-out/camping. Anyone can share the info on that?
Tourlou!

I can buy the gifts etc. if you give me a range of how many things (i.e. bottles of wine etc.) and approximately how much to spend, that would be good.
-
Hey all!
I will be there. I will also bring those Five 2 Nine raffle tickets with me if some are interested. For more info see post:

Dani and I will be up Friday evening.

Don't forget to bring your gently used paddling gear if you whish to help out Sindy Audet, a CdB member, who is trying to pay for the cost of coaching and travel to stay on the Canadian C-1 slalom team.
Tickets will also be sold for great Paddle Shack Prizes and Coaching sSssions with Sindy at Valleyfield!
See you there!

What time are we meeting for the shuttle at Bonnet Rouge?
I think we usually meet for about 10:30 or 11:00 am
Sandra
-
I'm planning to go for Saturday and Sunday...would like to carpool up on Saturday morning. What time is the first run getting started (or does it go in waves?)
...oh, I see that Sandra has basically asked the same question...

If you read above, I think Larry says, that departure of the suttle is at 10:30AM.
Paul
-
I will be there with a friend. I'm showing up Saturday morning.
Larry, call me if you want me to help 613-601-3920.
-
I will be coming, paddling tandem in an open boat with Dave, who has not done this river.... hopefully we will not be the "entertainment" as Mark Harley suggested when I showed up years ago to paddle solo (I was already Terrified... but later Mark was there first to help when I dumped at Corbeau.)
Looking forward to seeing some familiar faces

hi
No the stand alone thread
http://www.cdb-ottawa.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=4082.msg8127;topicseen#msg8127 (http://www.cdb-ottawa.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=4082.msg8127;topicseen#msg8127)
provides a google map link to Bonnet Rouge and indicates the meet time.
10:30 am is the meet time
If it takes 5 minutes for the group to organize the shuttle, shift boats around, yada yada, well then you can get going at 10:35 am to the river.
But when does that ever happen?
Larry

What is the needed level of paddling skill for this river? I have done the Middle Channel on the Ottawa with 1 swim.
-
I will be there.
Peter
-
The level is very low so it is not hard and you can portage the big ones if you feel you need to.
-
Louis,
Christian, Jack, Sara and I though that you could bring the salmon with some dill (Anneth), lemon juice and tartar sauce. Since you will not be paddling Saturday you could help Larry prepare the Feast! Bring your receipt so that Christian can reimburse you! I'm bringing some homemade salsa with corn chips, bread rolls and butter!
Thanks,
Paul

hi
Novice - Intermediate skill level.
The very popular Gatineau Festival runs on the very same stretch of water .... www.gatineau.org (http://www.gatineau.org) provides a good description of the river.
My general description ... a long lake with some rapids thrown in just to make it interesting.
The festival attracts boaters of all skill levels.
Normally the gauge reading for the Festival runs around 13-15 which is ideal and lots of fun.
Presently the gauge reading is 4-5 and has been there most of the summer

Wow, what a great Beast Feast!
I would like to thank Larry Wong for organising the Greatest Beast Feast ever! We had tons of people over, great food. The new spit works wonders. Everyone brought food to share, Kelly and Anita, with Liz, Daniella and Greg serenaded us with beautiful songs all evening after the feast. I met tons of new members which are sure to be impressed with our club. The Gatineau was as beautiful as ever and way easier this time around! Much fun running old and new lines, feeling safe that so many people were there watching our backs. Jeremy was busy rescuing people all weekend! We raised $450 dollars for Sindy Audet to help defray the cost of her Olympic trainning programme. We met new paddlers like Jean Michel, Guy, Elise who had a lot of fun under the carefull coaching of Louis! And what about Sindy, Dirk and Barbara who paddled with us all weekend and impressed us with their skills, in C-1's no less. A few bumps and bruises, but nothing serious thankfully. I can't wait for the next Beast Feast! Big thanks for all the people who helped prepare the food, like Annie, Julia and Jennifer! Many thanks to Jason from Paddle Shack and Level Six for donating great prizes! many thanks to Chris Faraday and Julia and Christian for donating gently used gear (and new gear too) for the auction! Tibor and his family had a great time and are much improved paddlers now, bring on the Main Channel! I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff, which I'm sure that others will fill in...
Thank you all for attending and I hope to paddle again with you soon!
Paul ;D

It was a fantastic weekend!! I will post the pictures as soon as I figure out how to do it. Heather's coming over tonight so that should help. They are on my Facebook as that is the only place I know how to do it. I tried to take a lot so I would get everyone in. Thanks to all for a great weekend, especially the organizers. So many people came out for it. Must be a good event!
-
What a great time. On Saturday we had paddlers from beginner level to seasoned veteran and from 16 to 60's, and everyone enjoyed themselves. The Beast was delicious and sitting around the fire yaking and singing was a perfect way to relax after a big day on the river. Special thanks to Larry who very selflessly took responsibility for the Beast, scrambling to provide a new spit above and beyond even getting the meat, and spent all Saturday back at the camp site cooking it to perfection.
Thank you to Paul Potvin and Liz Edwards for the auction, prizes and the raffle, potatoes and I'm sure lots of other organisational items. Thank you Annie V for arranging the corn. Thanks to all the skilled paddlers who were there to scout and show lines. As usual you made it a super safe day on the river. On at least one set of rapids you handled several rescues simultaneously. And thanks to Rob Monti who allowed me to follow him through every rapid. Great lines Rob! It made for a relaxed run with some really fun rides.
Hope I can make it again next year, and perhaps be of more assistance. Cheers CdBers! SYOTR.

Preeeeetty sweet weekend, yes.
A few highlights for me.
Hearing my brother-in-law and Guy say they had a great experience...except maybe for the amount of water J-Michel swallowed in High Tension.
Seeing the Dej clan's progression - and Barbora's battle roll off Le Corbeau - since their first WW paddle strokes with me on the Madawaska this spring.
Hearing Jacques's expert and comforting words while checking out Elise's bruised vertebrae. Pfiou!
Seeing the smile on my own daughter's face after the last 2 rapids.
Seeing Larry drink from his bootie on account of those, what, 2? yes 2 swims - although I do not understand why he preferred his to mine.
(On the drive back, Elise remarked that she had swim just as much as Larry did...heummm... I must be long overdue.)
That little boof off Le Corbeau was sweet - thanks Ray.
Also happy to see that all those after-work kayaking hours on the St-Laurent are rubbing off on my skills.
Good thing I moved to Montreal, I now realize spending time with you guys is making a softie out of me.

Yes! Thanks to all of you for first having beast feast on the 7/8th so I could finally attend and then for volunteering your time or donating your goods (Larry, Paul, Liz, Annie, Christian, Kelly and Don and Liz). I enjoyed meeting the new members to the club and seeing my old club 'buddies'.
THIS CLUB ROCKS!
-
After not paddling for almost three months, Beast Feast was a wonderful day to come back and paddle and to re-connect with old paddling friends and to see some newer members experiencing the premier club event of the season, an event that was such a success due to the hardwork of previously mentioned club members. Kudos and thank you!
-
On a final note to the 2010 edition of the Beast Feast weekend, it was great to see all those that participated having a good time. Many helping hands made this event happen and to see all smiling faces made it all worthwhile. There was a little concern that there would not be enough beef but apparently 17 pounds is sufficient when corn, potatoes, salmon, sausages, salads, munchies, dessert and other food items are added into the mix.
Thank you for making the Club event a success.

Now if only the River Gods were a bit easier on me on the Sunday. Well that is a totally different topic all together, but didn't Tiger Woods shoot +18 over par just last weekend.

Note to self: Next year, bring sour cream for the potatoes....
