Title: Beast Feast 2012 - Aug 11 - 12
Post by: KellyM on July 18, 2012, 07:17:07 PM
Hi Folks

The CdB Beast Feast  will be at the Bonnet Rouge Camping Site near Maniwaki.

The date is the weekend of  August 11 - 12.

Some people head up Friday evening to camp rather than rushing around Saturday morning.

Check out the Bonnet Rouge website for directions,  http://www.bonnetrougerafting.com/

DO NOT MISS IT!!! IT IS THE PREMIER EVENT OF THE CDB CLUB!
MANY PADDLERS THAT YOU SELDOM SEE AND OF COURSE ALL THE REGULARS WILL BE THERE!

It will be a weekend of camping and running the Gatineau River which is running at lower levels this year and thus will be easier to paddle, even for the newest paddlers.

Great beach for sun bathing, swimming and playing (volleyball, etc..) and great surfing right at the camping site!

We'll have prizes from Paddle Shack & Level Six

Bring your significant others, rafting escort-trip can be arranged for the non paddlers!

Once again Larry Wong will be our Beast Master, preparing a 20lb.+ side of roast beef for the Saturday evening potluck dinner
Contributions for the pot luck can be any of the following: appetizers, salads, munchies, desserts ... booze wine, beer, shots if you so desire.

We need volunteers to take care of the corn and potatoes, contact someone on the executive if you`d like to help out.

Prior to the downriver portion of the day, some kitchen prep has be done with some helping hands, and a corn husking circle created after the day on the river. You will need to bring your own plate and cutlery.

Please reply to this post to let us know how many will be attending

Thanks, CdB Exec

Absolutely looking forward to this one!  But just a quick thought.  A fire ban was just announced across all of Algonquin park.   Might be best to confirm this on the Quebec side as 20lbs of cow cooks better with flames!

Cheers,
Marc.

Hi, Kelly!

I will be there for the weekend arriving in the morning of  August 11th. If there is anything in particular that you would like me to bring for the Saturday meal, let me know.  Last week-end, the Mini-Beast-Feast was great. I really appreciated the warm welcome.

Have a great day!

Typically, those bans don't apply for cooking. And I was in the area in the last few days (Lac du Poisson Blanc), and fire bans were a municipal affair, different towns had/didn't have bans... But let's find out!

Fire ban is a good question, but what if there is no water in the river??

Rain has been falling in the Upper Gatineau Valley, we caught some rain when running the shuttle at the
end of the day.

The level was at 3.5' on the Bonnet Rouge gauge, low but still lots of fun.
The surfing at the lunch stop and Bonnet Rouge was great.

Since the Gatineau is dam controlled, it won't run out of water.

I will be passing you the tiara at Beastfeast, Kelly as you are now VP. You have to wear it. Not only is a tradition (since way back in 2011) but it is necessary to authenticate one's commanding presence. You just can't wave to the masses. You have to organize them into labour pools. There's corn to be husked after all.  Potatoes to be wrapped in foil. Beer caps to be pried from the mud.

The tiara is not light, my friend. It is heavy, heavy with responsibility.

Some answers...

Colby...You do need to be a paid up member to attend Beast Feast. You can pay your dues on the site by clicking in the top left corner "click here to renew your membership". Here you will find the waiver which is absolutely necessary and you can fwd funds via Paypal. Barring this sign the waiver and bring the dues cash to the Beast Feast and you can give it to me (Kelly), Bill or Christian. Fifteen bucks is a very small price to pay for all this networking and a great free scoff plus all the other fringe benefits of the best ww paddling club around :)

What to bring?... Go with the suggestions on the original posting. Some people are volunteering already so I'll sort out who's doing what and we'll fill in the empty spaces as we go. There will be lots to do - thanks for the interest.

Liz...Yes, the tiara. You realize I have been wearing the tiara, at least in spirit that is. But of course I will ceremoniously accept the real thing at the BF. I have been working on my scalenes and upper traps in order to support the additional weight...lol

Hope this is helpful,
Kelly

Of course Paul will wear his thongs, this has now become an irrevocable tradition for Beast Feast. He has even been so busy with getting some tan on those exposed areas that he has not been able to show up for any or our recent outings, poor him! But I'm sure it was worth the effort. Paul, I'm looking forward to finally catching up with you!

Hi, although I volunteered I never formally said I was going.  I am going!

I was wondering about the camping details -- this may be obvious to others but I am a newbie... do individuals contact Bonnet Rouge to arrange camping or have sites been picked out already?  Also, who else is going Friday -- I would appreciate following you...

Just show up at Bonnet Rouge, no reservation needed. Typically the club camps in the main plain in the corner near the path to the river.

So, I have convinced my wife Sheila to come to Beast Feast with my nephew Martin & myself. However there is a caveat, she doesn't want to do any whitewater paddling, so I am going to bring both our touring & whitewater boats, and do 1 day of whitewater & 1 day of touring with her.

Has anyone paddled below the Bonnet Rouge camp grounds, I know that there are some small rapids around the bridge at Bouchette, but I have seen power boats going through this without consequences. As far as I can tell it looks like flat water below the campgounds with no rapids above a class 2. If any one who has paddled this before could confirm this it would be nice.

Of course if anyone is bringing any family who are not whitewater paddlers, then they are more than welcome to join us in a canoe or kayak. I am thinking that maybe if Tibor is coming he could bring his wife with her touring kayak.

J-N we have some spare equipment, paddles, lifejackets etc. left over from when my daughters were paddling, & I still have a Necky Jive that is an excellent beginners boat for messing around &/or learning to roll in, so if you are interested then come over to our place to pick up the gear.

My June Wells will be in London UK for the Olympics & her family for the next month - so I'd welcome NOT cooking while becoming a better w-w kayaker at Beast Feast. I'll have space in my Subaru Forester for another kayak and a passenger; maybe 2 passengers IF my new virgin Fluid Nemesis does fit in the back without needing the passenger seat down like my Big EZ does.

Leaving Saturday morning  from downtown on 11th AUG about 9am to 10am and will spend an hour in Cantley on the way to have my headlight re-laminated.

I'll sleep in my car, I have no tent.

Anyone want to ride up with me? Down too?

Rain, rain, go away come back another day.

The weather forecast is less than ideal for Beast Feast weekend ....
If you have a shelter of some sort (eg bug tent, shade/rain structure, tarp with poles), bring it for the weekend.

thanks

I find this hard to believe, old friend, with or without that special underwear, but will be delighted to see you - and the gang.
My regular Gatineau crew should be there (Chantal, Jean-Michel and I), arriving for lunchtime on Sat. with a couple more from Montreal. I'll bring some of the popular Montreal salmon too for good measure.

I have a problem.  I am the potato / corn person but I won't be able to go this weekend.  I need to find someone who can take these things for me.  I can drop off at your place or if you are leaving town this evening perhaps you can pick up from my place this afternoon.  I live in Riverside Park, near Mooney's Bay.

If you can drop them off at my place, I will take them but I won't be going til tomorrow morning so someone will have to wrap the potatoes in foil during the day. I may not be home this afternoon so you could leave them on the backstep, hopefully not to be attacked by wildlife. I live at 36 Barrette St. (Beechwood and Vanier parkway area).

Hi everyone, I really need your help.  And if you want to eat tomorrow night, you will step up.

I can't go to Beast Feast because my eyes are strained and I cab't see distances well.  I am freaking out, because they hurt, and because I am starting grad school in the fall, but that's not your concern.  What you should be concerned abo8ut is that I have the corn and the potatoes and I need someone to step up and get these things to Beast Feast for me.  Trust me, I want to be there, but I can't see.  So please, someone let me know where I can drop these things off.

I cant get a hold of Liz -- I have tried through the forum and via phone.  I have tried to get a hold of Kelly but so far no go.  What else can I try?

Please help me out here.

Thanks,

Janet

Hi Janet:

I'm sure you're still good looking, but sorry to hear you're not looking so good... Your eye strain I mean. Going with a kayak inside my Subaru Forester and 2 on top, and with Peter's & my gear, my SUV is getting full.

But if Dave isn't too far from you & has better space than I'll have,  I'll fit the vittles in somewhere. Might be on Peter's lap...

IF you can in comfort drop them off at 10 Driveway, next to the Corktown pedestrian bridge area and at the east end of Cooper or Somerset West, it would help. Otherwise I shall drive to you, I can sleep tomorrow night if not tonight!

Im truly sorry you have to miss BF especially with your given circumstances and I apologize to all for not having been checking the forum this week - work and personal things in the way.

I have the corn roaster pot, burner and gas coming up with me. I will not however be able to stay for the feast itself as I have to be back home quite early.  Hopefully someone can get them back to town. I can arrange to pick them up at a later date and return to Larry's

So many good w-w paddlers in this club, thank your goodness, you got me right side up a few times, merci beaucoup! With Don's boat tips for my Big EZ, and more practice, I look fwd to better driving and proper chanel choices.

Yes, I am holding my breath for it - that got me though Lucifers, with Jim, Tibor & others' quick rescues. (Tibor, I have your blue poly-propylene top & will bring it to Champlain & Whispers on Thursday, thanks again for the loan.)

A very worthwhile weekend, many cudos & appreciations to President Bill, Liz, Larry & all the organisers, & the Exec Committee.

Thank you for the pictures Jacques, they are great!!
Thank you to all of the organizers who have made this a great event!

This was my one year mark paddling with the club and I must say: you are an amazing group of people!!  Thank you all ;-)

Christian, BTW... I wouldn't make too much fun of our vice prez's life jacket.... as I heard directly from the source that it was once yours :-)

N.B.  I am really happy about my nose plugs, and shall put them on the next time I tackle rototiller!!

Yes! Thank you to Larry for spending his day cooking and the other organizers (Kelly, Liz, Paul etc.) for making it happen. It was really great to paddle with the club again and see both new and old paddlers alike.

Congrats to all of you who personally met Rotatiller and survived:)

We also really lucked out with the weather. The gatineau is a special place.
