Title: Beast Feast 2013--AND ATTENDANCE POLL! PLEASE RESPOND.
Post by: ChristianG on April 02, 2013, 03:05:23 PM
Club event: Beast Feast 2013, August 9 to 12 at Bonnet Rouge Rafting, Gatineau river!

The CdB Beast Feast is our club's main annual event: a weekend of river running on a stretch of the amazing Gatineau river near Maniwaki. The river is Class III big water (for a description see http://www.gatineau.org/en/river). Run the river Saturday, Sunday, and even play at the Bonnet Rouge wave right at the camping site. Some people head up Friday evening to camp and maybe even play a bit in the Bonnet Rouge rapid. A huge dinner feast is planned for Saturday. The event takes place at the Bonnet Rouge Camping Site near Maniwaki For information, see http://www.bonnetrougerafting.com/; turnoff to camp site road is at 46.280571? N, 75.922571? W.

The river level is low again this year and thus will be suitable for the newest paddlers. Great beach for sun bathing, swimming and playing (volleyball, etc..) and great surfing right at the camping site! We'll even have prizes from Trailhead Paddle Shack for entertaining antics on the river!

Bring your significant others and children. Rafting trips can be arranged for the non paddlers! For information on rafting, please contact Isabelle Gagnon, the owner of Bonnet Rouge, through the website link provided above or directly at 1 888 449 3360! Pets are not allowed at the Bonnet Rouge camp site, the river take-out, but are allowed in a smaller camp site operated by the same owners at the river put-in which is at 298 Chemin Godin, 46.336080? N, 75.941658? W; turn-off from main road at 46.385374? N, 75.941579? W.

Camping fees are $12 each night and include the following day's put-in and take-out. Those who are only there for the day will pay $10 for put in and takeout (wether you are kayaking or just staying on the campground to swim or do food prep).

Once again Larry Wong will be our Beast Master, preparing a 20lb.+ side of roast beef for the Saturday evening potluck dinner! And this year Jacques Tejeda will be preparing a succulent fish dish. Each Paddler should bring his or her own contribution for the pot luck: appetizers, salads, munchies, desserts, booze... Bring your own cooler to keep everything cool, and your own plates, cups, cutlery and napkins! On Saturday after the river run, we will need volunteers to help prepare the corn and potatoes--please contact someone from the executive Friday evening or Saturday to be directed to the corn husking or the potato cleaning and wrapping parties! Guitars and other musical instruments are welcome.

So, in order to help us organize the event, please use the poll above to let us know how many of you will be attending!

Also, Bonnet Rouge campsite has an outdoor restaurant serving breakfast at reasonable rates. In order for them to plan ahead, please use the other poll (http://www.cdb-ottawa.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=5433.0) to indicate if you will be having your breakfast with them.

Finally, shuttle has been reserved for Saturday and Sunday at 11:00, paid by the club. Please show up with your boat near the big yellow bus at 10:30. And in order to help planning, please use the last poll (http://www.cdb-ottawa.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=5432.0) to let us know how many of you will use the shuttle!

It's going to be a great weekend and we can't wait to see all of our old and all of our new paddling friends!

Most likely going to be there alone... I dont think my girlfriend wants to hop in a duo with me again just yet hahaha But she does want to riverboard or raft.

If there is interest, I am going to check with my boss at Horizon X if were not fully booked if I can borrow a raft/equipment or have one for dirt cheap for saturday for those with kids/wives who dont paddle just yet or want to get initiated in whitewater. I would guide the raft and would have 7-8 spots in it.

Let me know!?

I'd like to make it, but I may not be able to.

I will need to find someone to take care of my dog. I'd bring her along but she does not play well with other dogs.

Well, unfortunately Bonnet Rouge has anyway a big sign saying 'No Pet'. But the put-in camp site allows dogs etc.

Please read the first post in this thread, the info has been updated. The put-in is owned by same people as Bonnet Rouge and dogs are allowed, however you have to stop at the Bonnet Rouge Site to register first.

Because I'll be in my Winnipeg office from 13-29 AUG, I can't be at Beast Feast, good because I am sure even with a suitable kayak I'm not sure I could steer between Lucifer's & Lucifer's Anus   ;D   No stunts this year from me, Dr. Daniella!

Bonne chance, a tout le le monde!

Denzil, I'm quite disappointed. If Paul won't wear his thong, and Kurt refuses to sing, why should I attend anyway?

Daniela, you remind me of the South African who was told by a witch doctor to eat his own leather belt to cure his stomach ache. So he did, and it didn't. So the witch doctor said: "It just goes to prove, that the thong has ended, but the malady lingers on..."

Better to stick to tasty salads chopped and dressed by Caroline & me. Maybe at the AGM?

Will be coming with a whole bunch of people, tentatively Caitlin, Peter & Fraser in the car, probably on Friday evening. If the little weasel (Martin) isn't working then maybe he might come as well.

I may have to bring along my chicks and they would love to go rafting - hope this will be possible?
Looking forward to see you!

hi Dani!

Madame Gagnon and I spoke on the phone just now. She will give the CdB the Gatineau Festival discount. So aside from your two "Chick" if 6 more people join with them, the price will be $65 per person and they will put in the water with us Saturday and stay with us throughout the the running of the river. So gather up your friends who want to try something new and exciting and tell them about this rafting opportunity as I will reserve next week by mid week if we have the numbers

Hope this helps,

Paul:)

Dani,

Ask around or even start your own thread for fear of this topic being lost in all the conversations and either post your numbers or PM me by Wednesday and I'll coordiinate with Isabelle for the raft if the numbers warrant!

Hope this helps,

Paul, do you know if there is an age/weight limit for the rafting? Frida is 8 and around 30 kg. So far, I've gathered a group of 4 (2 adults, one teenager and her) for rafting, hopefully we'll manage to get a group of 8. Thanks for your help!

Adam and I will not be attending... we were waiting to see if a canoe course that we registered for would be confirmed, and it is. So we will be improving our paddling technique instead of running the Gatineau. Ce n'est que partie remise!  :)

I'm looking to car pool with someone to Beast Feast for Saturday Aug 10 only, ie without overnight camping.

I can drive my van with gear to a convenient in town departure point, picking up one other on the way, or serve as that departure point.  I can be the designated return trip driver if others of the car pool would like to have a beer or two at the Feast pot luck.  I'm also competent and experienced on the river and can serve as a guide and safety to those who would feel better with such support.  I live a block NE of the intersection of Churchill and Scott, and may be reached by telephone at 613 759-8348.

@ Doug Poulter

I'm also interested in just going for the day on Saturday and would like to carpool with you.  I'm new to paddling in the Ottawa area and would definitely appreciate some guidance!  I'll give you a call to coordinate a pick up location.  I'd be coming from Ottawa South so the intersection in question is on the way for me.

Thank YOU, Paul, for joining and taking some very nice pics!
And yes, it was another wonderful Beast Feast, I hope I'll be able to attend at least 30 or so more of those...
I don't think there can be another club out there with so many nice people. Special thanks for being so welcoming to all the girls I had to bring along this year - they had a blast!!!

For those who always marvel about the driving habits/skills of Qu?bec drivers, and were wondering why traffic was so delayed on HW 105 yesterday, see below for part of the reason.

This was at least a 3-vehicle event. While traffic was completely stuck, a first car went by on a flatbed tow truck, entirely missing its front end, engine and all. Another went by later on a different tow truck, less damaged. And this pick-up truck below, upside-down on someone's front lawn.

The question: whether or not he's the one (there's a very good chance it was a 'he') who made the actual mistake that triggered the crashes, how fast was he going  to end up this way? This was on a Sunday afternoon in a residential part of Gracefield with a slower speed limit, kids playing etc. Do they all think they're Gilles Villeneuve? He was a good race driver. No longer is.

And that's not mentioning the assholes on motorcycles that, while traffic was stopped, thought that they were so important that they could keep riding on the shoulder past the couple kilometers of stopped cars patiently waiting...

Boy...

(Unfortunately that's why they should sell T-shirts "I survived 105")

On another note!

Amazing Beast Feast!

It struck me that, with the picnic tables arranged in a row like that, in the field of green, under the beautiful sky, it look either like an outdoor version of the Queen's State Banquet at St George's Hall or like a Viking feast!  (or maybe it was just Kevin's "Brownies" hitting me  ;)

Anyway, I agree with Dani - at least another 30 yrs!!

Hi

4 ambulances and 3 flatbed trucks went by me. I turned around at the Frontier Campground back to a Casse Croute in Gracefield after seing a big lineup thinking this is going to be long wait. My other option was to pull off to the side of the road, break out the camp stove and cook whatever leftovers there were in my cooler. Also involved in the accident was an ATV(or the remains) sitting on a flatbed truck.

As for Beast Feast ... Another great time and success.
Just to put in a plug for a local Butchery. The hunk of meat was purchased from Brian's Butchery (near IKEA).

30 years ... hmm that's a long time.

"Brian's Butchery (near IKEA)"

Good to eat, and good to know!

It was a great time! But keep it a secret: for those who participated, you got shuttle 5$ x 2 = 10$ + how much you would pay for roast dinner = around 20$: your membership fee at work!!! If ALL members go, we'll go bankrupt!!! Just kidding. If all members want to go, we'd find a way... Thanks again to Paddle Shack for the prizes. Whoever got the DVD (The Great Inga Project), watch it with friends, non-paddlers too: it's very good, my mother's neighbour (of all people) had a copy and lent it to me when I was visiting. The movie mentions that it's where Philippe de Dieuleveult most likely drowed. For those of us who watched French television in the 80's, this means something...

Forgot to mention--some of our members who may have been beginners at some point clearly no longer are! Notably Dani, who spent a lot of time surfing Bonnet Rouge--that's no Pushbutton, a lot more intimidating and not obvious to get to, with all the boils! And Peter, who managed to attain and surf L'Agneau de Dieu by paddling up to it from below! Lariza is now very confident doing the big rapids. Congratulations to all, specially those I forgot...

Wonderful, what magic a bottle of Auchentoshan and some Swiss Chocolates can do, now even Christian likes me... Can life get any better? This club is better than any psychotherapist out there (ok, unless you compare yourself with a soon 16-year old baby-boy called M, but I'm repeating myself). Re Larissa and Peter, I could not agree more, and would like to add Adam - Peter and Adam are currently my heroes, since they are not wet behind their ears anymore but have still managed to progress to a "show-off-level" in just one year (ok, no cartwheels yet, but who needs cartwheels anyway?)...

The food was fantastic, the conversations on the fire pit were entertaining, we did not loose boats, neither on the road nor on the river. Great company, seriously. What a great weekend.

yes. Thank you to all the organizers!  special thanks to Larry for not paddling so we could eat. It was great to see everyone after being a non-paddling hermit all summer. Bonnet rouge was a good level to test out my boating skills.

Couple of fun comments from around the fire in case you missed it ;D

1.  Apparently all kayakers wear there pants around their asses like snowboarders.  There was a demonstration of sorts. Yes. Male underwear was seen. Come on CDB. We are behind on our dress code. At least that's the view from an open boater.
2.  Apparently Larry has a big 'clock'.  You can only guess how many comments followed that one.
3.  Not sure what kind of whiskey Dani brought, but it earned her a threesome with a married couple.
4. Finally, apparently Someone in our club has a hate on for blonde, blue eyed cutie girls.  Thank gosh I have hazel eyes

Sorry, already had some nice Port this evening, too much whiskey at Beast Feast.
My kayaking season is unfortunately pretty much over now, unless somebody is keen babysitting Frida while I'm surfing...
Hope to see you all at the Fall Party and then next year on the water again!
