Just received this message from the M.A.C.K. Fest organizer.
Bonjour tout le monde, Hi everyone!
I took over as Director of Mackfest this year and want to thank you for posting a forum on it! I had tentatively chosen the first weekend of April for the event but seeing that Mother Nature won't let go of winter, it looks more like the last weekend of April (26-27).
I will confirm these dates by March 15th so make sure to visit www.mackfest.ca
New to this year is a $500 cash prize to the winner of the Fish Hatchery race (Crowe river dam section), which takes place on the Sunday morning!!!
Pasta buffet, live music, raffle, silent auction, door prize and much more on the Saturday night at Bunkers Hideaway (www.bunkershideaway.ca), right in Marmora.
You can camp for free or book a motel/B&B when weekend is confirmed.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact. Si vous avez des questions, n'hesitez pas a me contacter au mannyfergie@hotmail.com

Adam and I are planning to be there.
-
I'm planning to go on the 27th.
-
One question though, looks like there is a race on the 27th, I'm not interested in that! Is everybody doing that race or what!? Do we still meet at Bunker's that morning if we want to do something else than race?

Answer: how many club members would want to race a Class V run, where Bastien lost two teeth two years ago?
I am sure Sunday people will run one of the available rivers...

Do we all meet at Bunker's Saturday and Sunday morning?
-
Salut,
Since no one else answered, I'll give you what I know. Although it doesn't look like I'll be able to attend this year (work travel).
Both mornings people usually met up at Bunker's. Make sure to be there early enough, they usually have some Tim's coffee and this year apparently some food (but I wouldn't rely on that). Some people did have plans and just bypassed Bunker's. Regardless of who meets where, I would suggest trying to find a group of people you plan on being with and see if you can join others. There are tons of people going on all the rivers.
Also, hopefully this is not the case this year... but don't be late for dinner at Bunker's! Last year I arrived around 7:30 (I would say is a reasonable time for dinner) and they ran out of food. Like, there was NOTHING you could order. The menu did not exist for whatever reason. We ended up driving in "downtown" Marmora trying to find a restaurant of any kind. The closest thing we found that was open on a Saturday night was the Subway inside of a corner store. That was it.
Great rivers down there! You'll have a blast!

Merci Luc.
-
I can paddle on the 27th (Sunday) only as well.

-
Luc is back in and we are trying to figure out whether to go down for the day, or the whole weekend.
Finding somewhere to stay is tough now.
-
I just booked a room for the weekend at the Belle Vista Motel so they still have rooms.
-
Try the Colonial Inn east of Marmora. It's about halfway between the Beaver and the Black
We've stayed there several times, they used provide breakfast for a very reasonable price.

Thanks for the heads up guys!! I will follow up on them tommorow.
-
The Belle Vista Motel wouldn't let my dog stay so I cancelled and booked the weekend at the Colonial Inn Motel which is dog friendly. They tell me they have 12 rooms, I booked 1 and 1 other that maybe booked but not confirmed.
-
Hey,
Is anyone going up for the just the saturday and would like to car pool? I would like to paddle beaver creek but i'm up for anything.
-
So Jon and I have a hotel booked in Marmora Friday/Saturday night. We were planning on paddling the Upper Black and the Beaver. What we do on which day is flexible. So if anyone is planning on coming, please post! Then we can coordinate meeting up and paddling these two rivers.
Luc
-
I want to run both the Beaver and the Upper Black in that order perferably.
-
Well, MACK Fest organizers just posted a few hours ago that the big race at the Fish Hatchery has been changed to a race on the Black from putin to takeout (essentially an endurance race). The race is now scheduled for Sunday on the Black.
So considering this, Jon and I have decided to avoid being involved in the race and we're planning on doing the Black on Saturday and the Beaver on Sunday (sorry Jeff).
So if anyone wants to join us, you're more than welcome! Just let us know.
-
Similar to Bill, Saturday is my only day to paddle next weekend. Not sure if it will be Hwy 7 run yet. Depending on others preferences, I'm inclined to go somewhere where we will have the river to ourselves and not have parking issues at the the take-out and put in, or line ups at rapids. I try to avoid spending the free time I have waiting in lines.
That said, between the Beaver/Black my preference is always the Upper Black. The little canyons, triple B falls, particle accelerator, the Mill drop, the locals selling homemade goodies at the take out and spending an hour less in the car would be my choice for a day trip. Plus in years past, Saturday night is usually prime rib night at our usual dinner spot on Hwy 37 just South of Hwy 7. Not quite as memorable as the mammoth over size cuts at the Old Mill in Old Forge which are known to induce meat comas, but not bad if my memory is not failing.
-
I will be there for saturday
-
I read the skinny on the Upper Black, but I need a bit more input. How does it compare to the Achigan?
Sandra
-
Hey!
I am not sure also depending on what people will be doing. I would be up for Saturday, but the day only. It all depends if I can carpool with some people.
Annie
-
Ok, well I suggest we meet up where everybody else meets at "Bunkers" between 8:30 and 9:00. There is coffee and we can organize vehicles there. All the info can be found on the mackfest.ca website.
But once people know who's coming, please post here so we don't leave without you!
So Black on Saturday for those that are coming for that day only.
Chris is a new member (but sounds like a very capable one!)... I don't know how he was planning on getting down there, but I suspect he might be up to carpool.
-
Sandra,
I would say its a step up from achigan, especially at the level its at.
-
BUT, I would add there are only 3 significant rapids... all of which can be easily portaged if needed.
-
And with waaaaaay more flat water.
-
Sandra, if you walk around 3B and particle accelerator (and the portages are well defined because so many do), it's a class three run and none of the rapids are as continuous as the first half km on the Achigan. Many also skip the Mill drop. Eliminate those and its a stress free relatively easy run, well below the difficulty of anything you would have run in Ecuador. You are over thinking again! You will get there and wonder what you were worried about.
-
Rob/Sandra, TOTALLY agree with Rob. Overthinking it. :)
OK, so after speaking with some people, we decided to adjust our meeting time and location for the Black. We'll be meeting AT THE TAKEOUT for 10:30AM Saturday morning. It's located by the dam in Queensborough. GPS 44.593203, -77.412631
This way, people from Ottawa can join us and wake up at a more reasonable time. If you plan on coming, please post here. Merci.
-
Oh, and for those that have never done it... bring some actual cash. There's a bake sale/BBQ with coffee and such at the takeout FOR us. It's pretty awesome. There was pie last year. Mmmmm pie.
-
Marc G., me will come and maybe Ben Duclos
-
I will be there for Sunday paddling. I might drive to Marmora Saturday late afternoon and sleep in my car at Bunker's. Are you guys planning to meet up at Bunker's Sunday morning or do you have a plan to meet somewhere else that day? I know that there will be plenty of people there that I could paddle with Sunday but I would prefer to paddle with the CDB crew! ;)
Frank
-
Well, nobody has expressed an interest in joining us Sunday except you. So I'll confirm a meeting point for Sunday sometime Saturday and post it on the forum. The plan is to paddle the Beaver Sunday. Just a matter of what time and where we'll meet up. But I suspect Bunkers will be the place to be at 8:30AM unless others from Ottawa are coming.

If you could post the plans for Sunday before 6 p.m. that would be great! I'm planning to drive to Marmora around 6:30 p.m. and I don't have a data plan for my phone (I know, I know...) so I won't be able to check the forum after that time. If you guys are certain to do the Beaver on Sunday, I could just me you all at the put-in. I guess I would just need the GPS coordinates and an approximated time. Thanks!

I ordered a paddle from the Paddle Shack in Ottawa and I'm wondering if anyone is going by there and could pick it up for me? I'm heading down to Marmora tonight after work and I won't be in Ottawa for some time.
-
Since Daniel and I were planning to return right after the run i also will have to cancel. Let will see if anybody is interested in doing the Petite Nation tomorrow morning.
ok we could come see you tomorrow.
gestion parental.... Daniel
-
Ok so at the moment, I know of nobody meeting us. I know Chris mentioned he was planning on coming but I haven't heard from him. So unless someone posts here that they are coming, Jon and I will NOT be at the meeting point waiting.
-
Hi Luc,
Barbara, Jaclin, Isabelle and myself will run the Upper Black on Saturday. Let's meet at the take out, at 10:30, as proposed earlier. We should be able pack 6 people and boats in the van. So shuttle is no problem (should be plenty of people there anyway)
We have a room somewhere close to Marmora and are happy to paddle with you guys on Sunday.
Dirk
-
Hey Luc,
Jim and I will be there as well as Rob M. and Annie
Bill
-
Yay! People!!! 10:30 at the takeout it is.
-
Still at work , Bill I will call later to get departure time.
-
I will be there sat
-
I'm at the colonial Inn just west of Madoc. I'll meet you guys at the take out for the black at 10:30am tomorrow.
-
See you guys at the takeout
-
Beaver. Meeting at Bunkers for 10:30.
-
We picked up the "onecy" hanging on the post at the Black take-out. The owner is requested to get in touch with me. :D
-
I'll be there tomorrow morning to meet you all at Bunkers. Cheers.
-
Sounds good. But since no one else from Ottawa, I think we should aim to leave Bunkers around 9:30. Sound ok?
-
Had an awesome time at mackfest this weekend!
More of us should get out to it. The clubs are always asking about us.
-
Great! Looks like our club had a good presence there regardless!
Wish I had gone. But surfing at Champlain at 59.4 m kind of makes up for it...

-
We had an awesome day on the upper black!
No carnage at all.
The level it was at this year was alot better than last.
Luc and I lead a group down the beaver today, mostly not CDB, so we made some new friends :P
-
We paddled on Sunday the Skootamata. Interesting canyon, was full of water with big waves, holes etc. That was fun. Met some paddlers from north of Toronto. They said the canyon was like the Kipawa.

Dirk, the onesie you've got,is it level6 ? If so I know who owns it. I could grab it from you and get it to him. Just confirm first please.

So how about posting up that video of the Upper Black? I want to see my run on the Particle Accelerator.
-
Hi Luc,
it is indeed a Level 6 onesie, color is black. It is safe in our basement, ready to be returned to the owner anytime.
Dirk
-
Video will come in a few days. Jon also has the video. So we'll see who gets to it first between the two of us.
Dirk, sadly the owner lives in southern Ontario (Guelph area). Could I somehow pick it up from you? I can get it to him through a common friend. You can email me your address at lafreniere.luc@gmail.com and I can organize a time to stop by one evening to pick it up.
-
A few days? Come on dude, at least send me the video of my run on the Accelerator.
-
To anyone that saw my missed line on particle accelerator, i forgot to turn my go pro on...
-
I have it on video :P
-
Cannot wait to see mine either :D
Thanks so much for filming it John.
Annie
-
Well, I hope François doesn't mind. Here's his video he made of Sunday's Beaver Creek.
