Title: Palmer Rapids weekend 2014 - Paddling Clinics
Post by: Bill Schlarb on May 21, 2014, 09:57:00 PM
As part of our annual Palmer Rapids' weekend, we will be running white water kayak clinics on Saturday  for  both beginner paddlers (in the morning) and intermediate paddlers (in the afternoon).  The cost will be $20 per person (the club is subsidizing the cost).

The beginner clinic is planned to run from 10:00am to noon and the intermediate clinic is planned from 1:30pm to 3:30pm

EDIT:

"To give the non camping paddlers a chance to arrive in the morning

the beginner clinic will run from 11:00 to 13:30 and
the intermediate/advanced clinic will run from 14:30 to 17:00

The features (and water level) at Palmer Rapids will somewhat dictate what 'tricks' can be taught and practiced but we have Zach for the day and he is eager and qualified to help us; so, I encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity.

Adam"

We are trying to gauge the level of interest in these sessions.  Please let us know by responding to this post and letting us know what level would interest you.

Our instructor is Zach Zwanenburg, a great young paddler from Cornwall. You may have seen him competing at the Level Six Cup at Bate Island a couple of weeks ago.  Many of you probably know his father, Robert Zwanenburg, who runs CREW, Cornwall REcreational Whitewater.

I'm interested.  Do you think it would be beneficial for me Bill?

Hi Bill,
What's the date for these training sessions? Are they on Saturday?
Thanks,
Caroline

I'm interested as well. I'm not sure whether the beginner or intermediate would be most appropriate for me, but I'd be interested in doing at least one of them. What topics/skills is each expected to cover?

Thanks!
Jordan

I am interested as well, in both. I'm not sure where I stand but I can definitely learn from both!
Cheers

I am interested in the training. Like others I am not sure which level would be best for me. A bit more detail would be usefull. Thanks Bill

Hi CdB,

Our instructor, Zach, can teach everything from:

Very beginner - rolling and bracing to

Beginner - anyone who wants to learn to surf or learn basic moves like spins, bow-stalls (I didn't think a bow-stall was basic but anyway..) and that sort of stuff to

Advanced - anyone who can establish a solid surf (that's me), spin (yup), bow-stall (not quite yet) and wants to learn stuff like blunts (sure), loops cartwheels (why not) and airscrews (in my dreams - on Garb!).

So, I'm excited!

There will be only two sessions so how we slice it will depend on the feedback that I get from you.

Let me know what you think. Is this too advanced, or is it just right?  The club is subsidizing it and putting it on for you; so, your input counts, a lot!

ALSO
Zach will camp Friday and Saturday night and is looking to carpool with someone.. let me know

Cheers,

Adam

I think I'd be down for both. I could use a refresher on the finer technique of rolling, but I'd also be love to have some tips for when I'm on the wave... Would both be $40, or does the cost of $20 cover both?

Grace and Peace,
Jordan

I believe the $cost is per moring or per afternoon session and not for both.

Paul :)

I'd be up for both as well but perhaps less interested in the morning session if it is "very beginner". I'm in for the afternoon for sure.

Hum, I don't know how to do this but I wonder if a paypal option can-could-should be made available to shore up payments and how many candidates are registered or if arriving with $20 cash will work just as well?

hi

Let's keep it simple.
Register by replying to this thread
Bring cash ... the $20 bill in circulation is waterproof, usually what the ATMs normally spit out.

Actually there is a way to register and pay online ... but not really worth the effort, time or any benefit to setting up an online payment method.

I'm in for the Intermediate/Advanced (bow-stall be damned!) I'll see if Lariza is up for the Beginner.

I just spoke with Paddlers Coop.  The present river level is 200 cms.  He thinks/hopes it may go down to 150 cms for the weekend; however, apparently, the 'dam' people just give him a 15 minute warning as to what they will do.

Not familiar with the water levels. In the past, what have been the typical range of levels for the Palmer Rapid Weekend

hi

Levels have ranged - 50-200 cms     cms = cubic metre/second

100 cms is the optimum

50 cms  Bring your fishing rod to catch catfish below piano rock
200 cms offers a few more channels to practice on ... but really doesn't change the classification of the Palmer Rapids too much, elevating it from Class II to Class II+.

We paddle the river no matter what the levels are ...

Any idea which play wave?  Is there a cap on the lessons? I.e. is the intermediate full? Still trying to decide if I want to battle the bugs:)

Jenn is pretty excited about the beginner course (and I'll be happy to let a pro help with her roll  ;D )
And I'd like to join in for the intermediate course.

Hi folks,

So far we have..

BEGINNER
Jeff T
Jordan
Simon
Allan
Lizanne
Leslie
Jenn
Daniel (tentative)
Lariza (tentative)

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED
Adam (me)
Jordan
Elizabeth
Jeff
Leslie
Marc
Sandra (very tentative)

I am not sure what feature(s) we will be working on.  It will be level dependent and that depends on the 'dam' people.

IMPORTANT

Our instructor, Zach, needs a ride up (carpool) Friday and back Sunday.  His presence is fairly important (OK, essential) to the success of our kayak clinic! ;) So, please keep him in mind if you have room.

Cheers,

Adam

I think I can help if I had some details about where he is located and what time on Friday he would like to go. (I am fairly flexable) Have a truck and an extra seat.

Adam, I definitely don't want to take the spot away from someone else. Not sure how big the class should be. If it is getting too big, count me out. It might also be 'if I make it there in time kind of spot'. If that is an issue, then just count me out. No stress either way. thanks for organizing!!

I'm actually going to have to drop out of the the afternoon intermediate/advanced clinic... As much as I would like to do it, I realized I'd already agreed to paddle with a friend for the afternoon. Sorry.

Also, this same friend (a recent member to CdB as of earlier this week) is planning to come and was interested in the beginner clinic in the morning, but hadn't received a confirmation email yet and wasn't able to log on or post to this forum yet. His name is Kurtis Benedetti. Could he be added to the begginner list?
