Title: Weekend of Paddling: Beaver/Eagle Sept 6 & ? Sept 7
Post by: lafreniere.luc on August 26, 2014, 10:15:47 AM
Hi folks,

Saturday, Sept 6th:

Jon Ward and I are planning on heading down and camp Friday, Sept 5th and paddle the Taylorville/Eagle sections of the Beaver on the Saturday. Dam release is scheduled for 10AM to 2PM for Taylorville, and 1PM to 5PM Eagle section.

Plan is to meet at the Taylorville takeout for 10:30AM (allowing anyone from Ottawa to join us). Coordinates: 43.927120, -75.321590

Do a few laps then head over to the Eagle section and do the same.

Information on each section here:

Taylorville: http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/2612/#main

Eagle: http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/2614/

If you have not been there before, the Taylorville section is a lot of fun, but very short run. The Eagle section is definitely for the more advanced boaters and has serious consequences if you make a mistake but the most exhilarating run I have ever done. From experience, I highly recommend full creeking gear for the Eagle (full face, elbow pads, etc.) and keep it mind for the Taylorville section. If you don't want to paddle the Eagle, you can definitely be a rescue/spectator. Easy access and highly entertaining. Also, rescue folks are much appreciated as some have learned last year.

Sunday, Sept 7th:

Jon and I are planning on paddling. We're open to suggestions. In an ideal world, something in the states since we're down there but we're willing to come back home to go and do something like the Rouge. Post suggestions here.

Luc,

Moshier Falls Section of the Beaver on Sunday. Beautiful drops that you can carry up and repeat. It's like Christmas Day. AW negotiated one runnable day for that stretch. It's dewatered the rest of the time for hydro. You are there already running the other two sections. Why would you leave that out and go anywhere else?

My bad Luc.  Got the date wrong.  You are talking about the w/e after Labour Day.  Ignore last post.

Chris, just to clarify because of the confusion... when you say Saturday, you mean the 6th? Or this upcoming weekend?

I might be in Saturday the 6th...
Thinking of going this Saturday as well. Can't make 2 days in a row for the next few weeks.

I am planning to go on Saturday the 6th.   I would run the Taylorville section section at least twice.  Is anyone else going open boat?

So current planned attendees:

Myself
Jon
Yannick (none of the current people are open boaters, but we'll see if someone else joins us now that you want to come)
Chris
Chris's buddy (if he comes)
Jacques (maybe)

Are you doing the Taylorville in the AM before moving to the Eagle section?

That's correct. Taylorville release is from 10 to 2. Eagle is from 1 to 5.

Probably do the Taylorville section at least twice (but very likely three if everything goes reasonably well) before moving to the Eagle section.

I will also add, please consider making sure you have appropriate travel insurance when coming to the states. Also, make sure to have the appropriate info to obtain said insurance and ideally, let someone on the trip know where it is before getting on the water.

I for one, if something were to happen (not that I want to jinx it), do not want to have to make big medical decisions for anyone and having to worry about the costs involved.

Also, passports are obviously required.

Good point.
MEC has travel insurance through th Cooperators that covers high-risk activities like ww paddling and climbing.  It free for members for 2 day trips to the U.S.  You need to pay for longer coverage but it is cheap.

For Sunday, what about Black Watertown? Is there any water in the Moose? Independance?

I'm hoping to make it down there to paddle the Taylorville Section, and to rubberneck the Eagle Section. At this stage I'm hoping to be geared up and ready to scout/go at 10:00 if any others are that ambitious with the clock. As I'm not planning to paddle on the Eagle section I want to make the most of the training section.

If levels permit then the Black on Sunday certainly sounds like a good plan to me.

Yeah, I checked, the Moose and the Independence both have too little water (that could change.. but...). I thought of the Black as well... I think that one is a good idea. Many people haven't done it.

So if everyone is good with that, let's plan on doing the Black in Watertown for Sunday.

American Whitewater description is here: http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/detail/id/1255/#main

Note that it's the Watertown to Brownville (BROWN!) section.

It's about 1h20min drive from the Beaver where we'll be camping and about 2h from Ottawa. So again, let's plan on meeting there for 10:30 at the takeout. Coordinates: 44.002221, -75.982905.

Again, for anyone who hasn't done it before, this river is playboat friendly. There's a play hole right at the putin as well that can be a lot of fun called Hole Brothers. Knife Edge is probably the only rapid that is really unpleasant if you screw up. Glen Park Falls is awesome to practice your boof! I'd guess it's about an 8ft drop and relatively easy. Although some people (*cough* Daniel *cough* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVQcf8-gWVs&list=UU32S4xA7VNcop1YyAMLQN4Q) have had a different experience on this one. So make sure you can actually boof!

Now that we have a plan. I'm going to make a new post with the exact succinct plan for both days as a sticky note. Feel free to arrange carpooling and what not on this post.

So that means Saturday is still a go for Taylorville and Eagle?
If so, I'm in.
Sunday I'm out...

Yep. Regardless of who shows up, Jon and I are definitely going. The more the merrier of course.

Also, other "sticky" topic is where the whole weekend is laid out.
