Title: Palmer Rapids Weekend May 27-29
Post by: jonyak on May 24, 2016, 09:35:37 AM
This thread will be for people to organise rides etc for the weekend.

I will be bringing both my playboat and my creeker. I will be going up friday night and staying until Sunday.

Hopefully we can organise a trip down the madawaska for sunday. Also maybe set up some kind of an informal clinic for saturday!

Here is some info on the Lower Madawaska run, its a great 2-3 run, suitable for all levels of paddlers. http://www.whitewaterontario.ca/rivers/index.php/Madawaska_River_Lower

And here is some level info for the river as well: http://wateroffice.ec.gc.ca/report/report_e.html?type=realTime&stn=02KD004

If it can hold around 100 it should be at a good level!

Is there a map to the Jessops campground for those of us who have never been there?

Weather still calls for 40% chance of precipitations, but since it'll be rather warm I still think of going Friday. Somewhere in my garage is a camping canopy...

Is it cancelled if it's supposed to rain? Or pushed to another weekend? I know things can change but right now they're calling for 10-15 mm of rain for both Saturday and Sunday in Madawaska. Ok for paddling but not fun for camping.

Mix of sun and passing rain for Ottawa. I'd suggest having the Palmer's weekend moved to another weekend and do a local run either Saturday or Sunday. Just a suggestion.

Hi.

Closest EC listing is Bancroft, see below. It is essentially the same forecast as Ottawa and Petawawa: 40% chance of precipitation all weekend, around 28 C.

I say let's wait--changing the date of the event is of course possible but this should be discussed tomorrow at the pub, say...

I think the forcast is getting better as time goes by. And at 30 degrees, the black flies that Jon promised should be gone!

I don't think the event should be cancelled or postponed
In past years I have attended ... there has been rain, sun , snow, sleet, wind, bugs, cold, high water levels, low water levels ...but the event has never been cancelled.

Not sure what club members expect or want out of this event. We used to run our clinics in-house. It's an intermediate river which is just right for the novice/intermediate ... if you want to up the level, paddle the section backwards.

Unfortunately the club's weekend competes with the Ottawa Race weekend, Great glebe garage sale and a myriad of other activities. But I thought this was a paddling club.

This event will go on!

Bring your rain gear!

I have a kitchen tent that I can bring to set up. Also, if someone has a large tarp I will bring some rope and we can set up a large dry lounging area. Barring that I will stop and get one on my way up friday night.

Think positive thoughts, it was supposed to rain all week here and I have yet to see a drop!

Regards,

The campground is right on the river, so I will probably be up and on it real early to get a couple solo laps in. But we'll be there all day. you will have no issue finding us, its a short section that we walk back up and run again and again.

Right at the campground is the first rapid, a small run that is easy to repeat, and even has a small play wave at some levels.!

Should I bring food and a camp stove, do we eat together BBQ style, or can you go into town to eat and get food?

I need to be back in the city on Sunday so I am planning on driving up Friday after work and returning Saturday after paddling.

Is anyone else doing something similar? Would anyone like to share a ride (I am happy to drive or be driven)?

Camping-style. Better to bring your own food and drinks, the 'town' is small...

FIRE BAN!!!

I camped at Jessup's last weekend. He did not allow fires. Very eerie and cold sitting around an empty firepit :(

Check before you go, but fire ban is likely still in place.

have fun,
Seamus

last time we placed all our lanterns in our pretend fire pit ... beer still tasted the same

It is pretty dry up there

Level is dropping, was around 62 this morning when I checked. Still good. I was up at hass hole a couple years ago at that level and it was still perfect.

Come tonight.

I will be there. I don't want to be there alone :(

nothing more sad than me drinking beer alone in the dark in a campground 250 km from home. :P

Bill Kirkland from the RA (other group that paddle the river at the same time)  said a pair of booties were left at the the take-out.  Contact me (or him) if they are yours.

And a huge thanks to John and everyone else who helped organize and who attended this weekend,  I had a great time.

And just to think, someone thought to cancel the event because to the torrential rain in forecast.
A wonderful hot, humid, sunny weekend to spend with new and returning members.
The water level at 62 cms if anybody is keeping track.

Despite the fire ban, we circled up around the smoking pic that scared all the bugs away. Or maybe it was the stories or talk of sharing sausages. Oh yes, the beer still tasted the same. And then the cool lightning strike in the sky which proceeded about 30 minutes of rain late in the evening which broke up of the group.

And the things that make you go hmm ...
- if you take your car keys on the water make sure they are attached or placed in a closed pocket
- watching MKC chase after their wayward shuttle van.

The roads to the putin and takeout have been fixed and graded with gravel, and at the moment not sure by who or what company.

Make sure you have more than one key for the vehicle you take out paddling.  Might be an idea to have more than one key with you too.  Vinko got to spend Sunday night at Palmer's too.
