First thing I heard was, run it with someone who's run it before!

Always good advice on any river you haven't done before...

Thanks!

My friend CJ ran it a few times at low water before. Him and Adam went and scouted it this afternoon after out little session at Deschenes and he just told me it was real big and full of big meaty holes! Thats what he likes to run but hes a really skilled boater and used to running that stuff. Not for me, at least not at this time of year.

Hi

I've never actually run it, but I've driven by it for years on the way to the cottage. So, just some observations/2nd hand knowledge...

First thing I heard was, run it with someone who's run it before!

At low water you can see that there are a lot of ledges, some sort of look to me like the nasty straight and flat low head dam kind of ledges, so keep that in mind.  You may want to take a look at low water and get a feeling for the underlying river bed.  The run-out stretch to the bridge is very bony at low levels.
There may be rebar around, but that's an assumption and probably not an issue at higher water.

You can stop in at the parking lot of the, I think it's a veterinary hospital, on the north side of the river (Hwy 307) for a middle view of the stretch of rapids. Off hours would be the best time. A little further up on the left is an ice cream stand and the only "public" launch spot I can think of.

The other thing I've heard is that there are a couple of ledges on river left that canoeists like to play in, practicing eddy turns and such.  I think you can see them just upstream from the Vet hospital vantage point.

Maybe someone on boatwerks would have further info.

Cheers,
John

Hi John,

Ran it once a long time ago in early September and never really had the urge to go back because it's pretty much a one shot run.
It would be a short and fast if the Gat is running high (someone said it was at 22' near Maniwaki)
From the Google maps closeup, there are two wide ledges upstream of the Alonzo Wright.
That being said, if you stayed along the right shore, you could probably sneak them if they look too big.
Access may be a bit iffy since the shoreline is very built up around.
