Beginner/New paddler introduction
« Reply #1 on: August 11, 2015, 07:56:33 PM »
Hi All,

I'm new here, looking for paddling opportunities.

This is my first year doing white water, been paddling a sea kayak for few years though.  I did a week at MKC at the end of June/July, and managed to hurt my shoulder on the last day (wouldn't you know it, I broke my paddler box...), so I haven't been out in any white water since.  I've been doing a bunch of sea kayaking the last few weeks though, so I'm getting confident in my shoulder again.

During the course I was in a Remix, and have since bought a Jackson Zen.  I'm mostly interested in river running at this point, and some play/surf activities.

Anyways, getting to the point, where and when would you recommend getting some paddle time in?  I've done the lower mad several times in a canoe, and once on the MKC course in a kayak, except it is way low now, and looks to remain that way for a while.  The Ottawa is just intimidating, and I really want to get some time in the boat to familiarize myself with how the Zen handles currents and eddy turns.  I suppose that the Ottawa at the current water levels is big, but still fairly friendly?

I'm considering doing a second week at MKC this year yet, money and vacation time pending...

However I would love to get out with a group in the meantime.

I understand that there is a weekly planning (beer) session on Thursdays, however I can't make it out then since I have other commitments on Thursdays.

I don't have a roll yet, so I hope to be able to get out with some people that won't mind helping the likely swims.

Thanks
