TR--Petite Nation

...not that "petite".

Ivan and I ran it last Saturday. It was raining and foggy, and none of us had been there before: we had no idea of what was coming, so lots of scouting.

We elected to walk the first half of the first rapid, two trees were barring 2/3 of the river and the only passage would have been next to the bridge ruins on the right (see below), but there might be dangerous stuff in there according to Myosis... We didn't take the risk of missing the eddy/bay river right for the usual portage because even there the waves were big, so we ended up portaging river left without a trail, starting above the rapid. I'll never do that again. We put in below a big hole/pourover (see other picture) and ran the rest of the rapid without incident.

The rest of the river was great. The rapid "Les Portes de l'Enfer" was great fun! Ivan got worked a bit by the big wave at the bottom, whereas I paddled so much to the left to avoid it that I ended up eddying out in a micro-eddy against the cliff, then went down a little slide and missed the wavetrain entirely... Must have looked very professional, but was entirely accidental... Scouting that rapid from the top of the cliff gave us a little surprise: a female malard took off in front of us, leaving her 'family' behind...

It would have been nice to be in Petawawa, but the Petite Nation was fun too.
