Had a swim there 2 years ago, also around zero on the gauge (it was in September).
After rolling back up below Phil's hole I ended up to far river left and missed the tongue between the two halves of the horseshoe. I was really close to the island, it's very shallow there and that white rock is not smooth at all... I always open my eyes while upside down, and I can say that I saw many of the rocks that hit my head and my shoulder. Got a big bruise on my shoulder, started to hurt during the long paddle to the Lorne. Nice way to start a run...
Below is a photo that I took afterwards, the new scratches can be identified due to the duct tape (and there was NO scratch on the camera itself before that!). The shocks were so great that the camera didn't end up recording anything, even though it had been turned on above Phils... I suppose the movie file was not closed properly when the batteries and memory card were jarred. Too bad, it would have been great footage...
