John are you coming even if you have to use the aluminum and plastic flatwater paddle I have, or might you have to bail?  Just let me know before 3:00, so I know if I have to make other shuttle plans.

Jim, if John can't make it call me ASAP once you know if you are coming, or let me know ASAP if you know you can't make it, so I can sort out a shuttle with my bike, or get my wife to drop us off.

Peter

If my son is coming I can't make 3:45 at the takeout anyway.  4:00 at the takeout would be good, so we'd be putting in after 4:15.  We would not have to wait much for you Jim, try calling me when you're mobile.

Oh yeah, Thursday... today's Wednesday. We'll see how the river level stays up for tomorrow.

Touch base Thursday.

Hi John, my son can't make it today.  But, I'd like to do it today anyway, since the level is good now and will be falling off, at least until it rains more this weekend.  I might try with him tomorrow, we'll see.   I have a spare paddle if you need one.

Hopefully we can go right down to the Ottawa River.  I think we can pull out just downstream of where the Carp flows out, at the end of Willola Beach Road, but I can't be sure if the ice on the Ottawa is clear right to the shore.  The river is 95% clear in these parts, but some ice is hanging on the shore, so we'll have to check it's OK before we paddle down to there.  It's on the NW side of the Fizroy Prov. Park, take Canon Smith rd past the park and turn left beyond it.  If the link doesn't work, just find Carp River on the map and you'll see.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=kinburn,+on&aq=&sll=37.230328,-95.712891&sspn=47.357671,78.662109&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Kinburn,+Ottawa+Division,+Ontario,+Canada&ll=45.484116,-76.21542&spn=0.020641,0.038409&z=15

I'll aim to be there to check that area around 3:45 and we can meet at the take out if you want.  I'll have my cell, 613-791-4116

Wow, John, you must get out and paddle EVERY river!  I'm not sure I can make 3:30. 4:00 might be better, but lets touch base during the morning tomorrow to see how things, inlcuding water level shape up.

Hi all, I live west of town and will probably be paddling the Carp River this week.  The Carp River is only runnable for a short period of high water in spring or after very heavy rains.  I'll probably be taking my novice 13 year old son on it.  It's about as difficult as paddling the Pump House, although it does not have the big man-made eddies you find there.  I think it's about 6 km on one section, and can be over 10 km, depending on levels and if you go all the way to the Ottawa River, but levels need to be a bit higher past Galetta Sideroad.  I usually start where the river passes under Carp Road, just beyond Kinburn Sideroad.

The water level has to be about 5.1 metres on the gauge to not be too shallow to run.  This is not a river to float down upside-down since it is shallow.  Ability to stay upright in easy stuff is recommended.  But, most of the rapids are easy fast moving water with small waves.  I've paddled it in an open 17 foot Grumman canoe, although at a 5.43m level we did bail a lot and we swamped in one rapid.  I've seen typical kayaks on it, along with bigger Canadian Tire type kayaks on it, and open canoes with flotation and even a raft once.

Water will be cold, and with all the farms around, you probably don't want to drink it.  But, for those not ready for surfing Champlain or doing the bigger rivers, this is a nice easy paddle within the rural city, which only works occasionally.  I'm probably looking at after work this week and maybe later in the day on the weekend if levels stay high enough.

Let me know if anyone wants to tag along.

Peter
