What a great mellow weekend to start off the season!   Could not believe how warm the
water was...  Thanks to Tibor's gang for providing cooking equipment and BBQ skills!
Et merci a Daniel D. for providing a shuttle service at the takeout.

Stay tuned for upcoming Billy session(s)  (advanced playboating instruction with Billy Harris);
likely in a few weeks if he is available.

Thank you Mike for organizing the paddling clinic. Definitely really useful for the novice/intermediate paddler. As Larry described, the lower Mad was uneventful but this kind of runs are a very good opportunity for novice paddlers (like me) to build confidence surrounded by experience paddlers. Anyway, thank you to everybody for this really nice WE.

I hate you all. Damn it for not being there!!!

On the bright side, I did get to see my first icebergs today and even drank some by letting it melt into my mouth. Saw Cape Spear, the most easterly point of north America.

Interesting experiences but I'm sad I missed Palmer.

Indeed. Great weekend, sunshine, warm water and NO bugs! And definitely nothing 'mad' about the Lower Mad at this low level... Thanks to all 12 (?) who made the skill clinic idea a success! We'll refine the event even more for next year. --C.

A weekend at Palmer Rapids with sun shine, warm temperatures and very few bugs if any. Now when does that happen? There was an open fire ban on for those that heeded the warning. Roasting marsh mellows over a coleman stove was the technique used.

The Sunday run down the Lower Mad was an uneventful and pleasant afternoon, if you forget about the senile moment in losing a car key or finding the only pour-over on the river. Missing was a contingent of beginner/novice paddlers which usually adds to the entertainment for the day.

The new thing this year: there is catfish to be caught in the eddy below piano rock. A grandpa/grandson duo were pulling 5 pounders out using beef liver for bait. Looking ahead to next year with a possible fish fry in the evening.

Hope everybody had fun at the CdB Annual Palmer Rapids weekend, which has been held on the same weekend in May for the past 20 years. Now that's an early reminder for next year.

I can't think of a better place or time than Palmer's Weekend for Rainen to be introduced to his first day ever paddling on a river kayak. He went non-stop from the moment we arrived until he hit a brick wall and passed out dead tired on the ground after dinner at 5:30 p.m. and basically slept until 7:00 a.m. the next day.  For a kid who basically resents sleep, all I can say is wow!

For him to see so many people laughing, smiling and having a great time in and out of boats. He was super comfortable and paddled his little heart out.  When we paddled from the put in down to the next bay on river left and the other CDBers saw us coming and he was cheered, by Christian, Paul and others in the group, I think it made his day. When I suggested we walk out from shore and swim a rapid together he was totally up for it. Then when the swim got too long he saw Papa Bear Schlarb hovering around.  So he nonchalantly says, "Could we get a little help here."  So Bill paddles over and Rainen hops onto the back of his kayak for the paddle back in.

Back on shore he decides Larry should join us for dinner and Larry played along.

Even though there weren't any other kids his own age that day, he didn't even notice.  He was just a little ticked with his Dad that (a) we weren't camping over and (b) I didn't bring marshmallows to roast on the fire.

Next year!

I enjoyed the clinic and learned a few things for sure. Thank you all for organizing and helping the novice/intermediate paddlers out. I played around in the water on Sunday instead of running the river and ended up doing my first hand roll! My brother was convinced that I can do it and gave me a few tips. Awe! 😊 Of course I can't forget Marc and Tibor for all their help too. Oh and Tomas' gf Christy was a trooper. Thanks to those who helped her out as well. Cheers!

First, thanks Mike for organizing the weekend clinics.
I know you said it only took a few emails back and forth but the result of this was a great day on the water with quality instruction at a great deal price.

I had a lot of fun Saturday and I'm sure that the paddlers who stayed Sunday had a great run down the Mad!

Cheers,

Paul :)
