that last description is kind of scaring this newbie.  more than a tad.  is there a place where I can go to find a description of the features of what I will be paddling?

Not to worry Janet, there will be several experienced paddlers along to demo the lines to run and the spots to walk around as needed.

That description was that of the 2nd 1/2 of the 1st rapid, McCoys. It is a Class III+ fairly short rapid which beginners often don't run (although I've always ran it and swam only once...). Fortunately there is a nice trail running along it, and it even has a Class I-II bypass which we call Zoom Flume. A river description can be found here: http://www.wildernesstours.com/the-river/ottawa-river-tour.htm

The photo below (borrowed from WT) illustrates. It's not something anyone should be worried about given all the available options. Cheers! --C.

Left side horseshoe is not a hazard! its a great surfwave!  :D

Well, perhaps I wasn't precise enough... While the various features of the Horseshoe make for nice surfing, if you have problems in Phil's hole and end up heading straight for the island, the pillow of water will take you between the left side of the horseshoe and the island, and that's definitely not a place to be, specially if you've just had a concussion. A number of people went in there and came out with bloody faces, and I have good scratches on my helmet from there as well. It is definitely a hazard if you run the rapid from top to bottom.

Hi

My guess in time to get back in town for the BBQ portion back in Ottawa.

4 PM would be the lastest ... given that Newcomers Day normally draws a large number of people, herding cats in the same direction takes more effort than one thinks.

What time are you guys planning to take out?

Larry

Assuming my doctor gives me the go ahead (assuming she will this week), sign me up. I'm in.
Ha ha! You should be fine then. Just put-in in the eddy just below Phil's hole, that way you'll be perfectly lined up for the rest of the rapid, with no fear of hitting Left Horseshoe, which IMHO is the main hazard now of running McKoy's... --C.

I'm running a Triathalon in Ottawa that day, so I won't be able to make it. Sorry. Have fun and play safe, all

Ha! A friend is doing the same triathlon. I have instructed her to stick her bike pump in your front wheel if you appear to make too good a time... Unless you only do the running part in a team... Cheers! --C.

Saturday June 9th, is the Club's annual Newcomers' Day.

We will be running the Ottawa Middle Channel and/or Main Channel. The Ottawa currently at 1/8 ft. on the OWL gauge; we can set up two groups as needed. We'll have experienced paddlers in both groups to provide tips and advice.

For folks who haven't been out with us before please bring the following:

-- your boat with flotation, helmet, sprayskirt and paddle
-- lifejacket (PFD) and throwbag
-- drinking water for the day and a snack or lunch.
-- clothing appropriate to the air and water temperature, river booties or other kind of shoes.

We plan to meet at 10:00 AM at River Run. Our apr?s-paddle festivities will be a Potluck at Larry Wong's place around 6:00 PM;  friends and significant others are, of course, welcome to join us.
Please bring something to BBQ and something to share like desert or salad. If you leave food in the car for the day then pack it in a a cooler filled with ice....
