report from scouts is in ... wave at The Wall is not quite retentive enough to surf ... close, but needs to get just a bit steeper it seems.  The eddy was a lot of work to paddle up but could be done with some sweat.

Cool how fast that area was transformed from bony summer levels just a few weeks ago to something else entirely.

Pyranha Jed was neat, my first real experience of a pure playboat.  Felt like I was paddling a huge chunk of cork.

Gimp hood and Stohlquist gloves kept me toasty warm.  All in all, a beautiful place to be on a Tuesday morning.  Recommended, even without wave.

So... How was CB?
If it's in, I'd like to go tomorrow but it would have to be before 16h, my evening is busy and anyway, the sun is setting a lot sooner.

There is a strong correlation with the water level upstream, at Britannia, and the waves at Bate Island. But somehow these waves seem to depend on the level downstream, as determined by the various dams at Chaudi?re falls.

I turns out that even though the level is almost 59 m on the upstream gauge, there is unfortunately not much to surf at Bate island right now.

When fast moving water runs into slower moving water (ie deeper), the kinetic energy is converted into potential energy by pushing the water level at that interface UP.  This is called hydraulic jump, and depending on the proportions, gives us a hole or a wave.

There is a lot of water coming downstream, but since Chaudiere seems to be open, the deeper, slower moving pool isn't there for it to crash into.  They're probably draining the Remic basin to make room for more goose shit in the spring.

Beachburg is legit 17.  Seen it with my own eyes.

Ah well - no matter what, I'll be bobbin' around in my rented Pyranha Jed-eye.   If no wave, I'll just have to work on my flatwater McNasty.  Still worth skipping school.

But what was all this talk of it being 17 at Beachburg on the weekend?  Isn't that a spring-like level when we'd expect the Wall to be in?  Or has all the goose-shit piled up and transformed the river bed?

Hi Kurt.

I was just there tonight, with a flashlight. Just be prepared to find something... not very big. It looks like the level below Champlain is too low and the water isn't backed up enough for a nice wave. Anyway, have fun and let us know how it is!

Me and Evan are planning to hit Champlain between 8:30 and 9:00 tomorrow morning (I couldn't convince Justin to bag class).  Bonus if others in CdB have their priorities straight...
