Thanks Luc for posting this. Couldn’t stop thinking this week if there was anything else that could have been done to change the outcome

Literally on the call with all the people that were present. Including Bill and Stephen.

What I've learned is that this was a fluke event. An experienced paddler with an experienced group had an unlucky swim. Was swept up in a tree and was unconscious very quickly. The tree would be considered by almost all of us as a minor obstacle on a relatively easy portion of the river. Nobody would have scouted this and even if someone would have, they would have chosen to paddle around the tree.

He just ended up being very unlucky...

What is apparent from the call is everyone did what they could to help. From minor to major roles. It was just a very, very difficult situation in a very remote part of the river.

This wasn't even about scouting or not.

Of course I wasn't there, but I was under the impression, from conversations I had, that a streamer (tree) was involved. Could you explain what you mean, since (I assume) you were there and have some knowledge of the tragedy? We are all trying to make some sense of it all...

There is a debrief meeting going on tonight with the first people on scene and involved in the evac. A few of us will be participating.

We'll see if anything can be learned... But on the avoid this in the first place, I don't think there was much more that could be done beyond stopping to paddle entirely. I suspect the debrief will be more on how we could improve things in case an accident like that were to happen again. How to respond faster, etc.

This wasn't even about scouting or not. I'm still hoping to understand how and why this has happened since it really wasn't a difficult section. Not sure if there is anything we could learn from this tragic incident?

Thanks Luc. Tragic indeed.

Last week I was driving by Mississippi, Clyde, Indian rivers... Went to look at Blakeney rapids as well. My reaction was: "Gee, there are lots of trees in the waters!" Let's make sure we scout!

For those not on Facebook... this was just posted. Sadly, our group was first on scene it seems. Many of us participated in the evac.

This is what happens when you kick a 6'3" 17 y-o national judo competitor in the knee. By accident of course. He was unharmed...
