I don't post very often, but have been a member of the group for several years and thought I would contribute by sharing a trip report from this Saturday.
I had been wanting to visit this river for a few years and managed to convince a few CDBers to come along for a very quick trip.
We left Friday evening after work and made our commute to roughly 220 km north to the Gens de Terre River. We arrived very late on Friday night.

And got up very early Saturday morning.

Due to the point of entry of the logging road, we put in at the bottom of a major series of rapids and started a day with a quick warm up.

The next rapid was a class V ledge that we portaged. It was huge and dropped a significant elevation.

The next encounter was Hell's Gate falls, or as Todd called it a "Mini Virginia Falls" on the Nahanni. Another portage for us.

We then ran many very fun class II rapids with really fun wave trains. The next major challenge was the Canyon section of the river which last roughly 2kms. The map shows is as starting with a Class II/III, then becoming a class IV, returning to class II, then a class V, returning to class II/III and then ending with a class IV.
We ran everything but the class V which unfortunately I have no still pictures of (nor do I have pictures of the class IV in the middle of the canyon). Here are a few pictures of the Canyon portion.

The next several kms again consisted of many fun class II rapids. We then reached the final challenge, a class V ledge, again a portage.

We then proceeded to paddle out to the take out vehicle, which was unfortunately located at the end of another 20 kilometers of flatwater with 3 short class I/II rapids.

Jacques and Todd with the take out in view.

Todd packing up the boats on Saturday afternoon.

In all, we left Ottawa at 6 pm on Friday, spent 12 hrs commuting to a fro, paddled 32 kilometers of river with approximately 20 sets of rapids, 4 portages and arrived in Ottawa at 12:30 am on Saturday night or Sunday morning.
I want to thank Jacques and Todd for jumping in and joining me on this quick trip. The Gens de Terre is very isolated and truly a beautiful river, not a day trip from Ottawa, or an overnighter as we ran it for that matter, but we managed to enjoy a great day in a wonderful place.
