As of Wednesday afternoon, I've been advised repairs to the penstock below Agers Falls on the Bottom Moose will be completed by Friday afternoon and that Fortis Energy will go back on line by late afternoon or early Friday evening.
That means that paddlers hoping to paddle the Bottom Moose on Friday should plan on a morning/early afternoon run. If that doesn't fit your schedule, be advised that there will be a release on the Black River in Watertown from noon until two.
As in past years--Fortis will regulate flows over the dam at Agers to provide a level which seems to work for the most number of paddlers. The second half of the Bottom Moose becomes a bit more challenging at 1,000 cfs or more and so at my request, when the river is running at higher flows, Fortis dials it back to the 700 cfs range. Paddlers should be aware that Fortis does this at my request--not as an opportunity to chump-change its release and make more power.
If the majority of the paddlers don't like the level I've selected, you can let me know and I will raise the flows in future years. But I've been on the river the past two weekends at levels over 1000 cfs and I'm grateful we have the opportunity to tone it down for the Fest weekend. A little carnage is fun to watch but I don't want people getting hurt. At least not seriously. And I don't want people with class 4-5 skills to be discouraged from experiencing the Bottom because high water makes it too intimidating.
My call for weekend levels--in the 3.8' range. Pretty much optimal."
